Acto is a type system designed as the sans serif counterpart of the previous released Acta. Both type families were designed in 2010 for the redesign of the Chilean newspaper La Tercera, but unlike some of our previous fonts (i.e., Leitura) Acto doesn't exactly match Acta in terms of structure, so they can live on their own. Acto is our first sans where the uppercase has the same height as the ascenders, so we decided to avoid common problems like the confusion between the I and the l, by drawing a curved l. We kept that spirit by removing the spurs on the b, g and q, resulting on a more warm typeface than Prelo, for instance. In the end it's a very powerful sans family, with eleven weights with matching italics, for editorial and corporate design.

Back in 2017, I was working on a cutout font that I originally wanted to call Scissor Madness. In the end, I named it Cut Along and it was quite a popular font for a while. This week I decided to clean up my fonts folder a bit (as I usually have tons of unfinished fonts lurking in there) and I found a file named Scissor Madness. It was the original try-out for Cut Along. It contained a couple of nice glyphs that I never used, so I started playing around with them and after a day, I had a whole new font! So, in short, Scissor Madness was partly cut out by hand, partly computer made, but it is 100% fun to use! Scissor Madness comes with a bunch of very cute discretionary ligatures.

Allister Rough is a handmade font family based on Oldstyle English and Transitional fonts, modern typography and lettering. Coal Brush is a bit of a misleading name. It looks as though it was made with a brush, but it was, in fact, made with a almost dried out old marker pen. But a font named ‘dried out old marker pen’ doesn’t really fly, so I decided to pimp the name. There you have it, you can’t even trust an honest typographer! Marker pen or brush, Coal Brush is a very sweet little font. It is all caps, but upper and lower case differ and can be mixed freely. Plus there’s a hidden stash of alternates for the lower case letters and an alternate ampersand! I actually threw that in to make up for my lie. Akira Kobayashi's ITC Seven Treasures is a symbol font for use in patterns and textures. The interlocking patterns, usually circular or oval, are taken primarily from motifs used in Japanese textiles. Most of these designs are known as komon, or tiny patterns," and they are often applied to kimono and other textiles, although their use is not limited to fabrics. They also appear carved in wood in traditional architecture, and painted in pictures as background patterns. Each of the individual designs in ITC Seven Treasures Ornaments is carefully sized and spaced so that it will fit together into a continuous pattern. Most overlap slightly but precisely, so that when you type a row of them you can't tell where one leaves off and the next begins. They may be combined or alternated to vary the texture of a background pattern."

»Supra Demiserif« is the demi serif addition to the Supra family. I am no fan of slab serif fonts, so I designed this one with half serifs, that makes the serifs less important. Then I found, that the italic does not look nice with slab serifs, so I did only one italic cut for the normal weight. The light and normal weights and the dominant x-height with its high ascenders make for easy reading of long copy. The heavy and x-light weights are great for elegant headlines. Supra is an OpenType family for professional typography with an extended character set of over 700 glyphs. It supports more than 40 Central- and Eastern-European as well as many Western languages. Ligatures, different figures, fractions, currency symbols and smallcaps can be found in all cuts. with each other.

1st Ave is the most experimental of my typefaces. I took a picture of a metal and neon sign in the East Village of New York City. These signs are slowly being replaced by LED and LCD displays, but if you look hard, you can still find quite a few in the city. The signs give a mid 20th century feel to the city. To design 1st Ave, I took a picture of the sign, scanned it and increased the contrast in Photoshop so that the photographic forms became line art. There weren't enough letterforms in the sign to create the whole alphabet, so I cut up the strokes and collaged them back together to finish the entire alphabet. Important Note: 1st Ave is an experimental typeface and is not compatible with certain software such as Microsoft Word.

Larks' Tongues in Aspic is the fifth studio album (released in 1973) by the English progressive rock group King Crimson. I have always liked this name, as it reminded me of old stories in which witches threw all kinds of weird ingredients (larks’ tongues, bat wings and petrified dragon dung) into a big cauldron. When I created this font, it looked like the writing in an old book of spells, so I just had to call it Larks’ Tongues. Larks’ Tongues is a very lively headline font which would look good on (children’s) book covers, posters and product packaging. So, if you are about to write a book about witches, want to throw a halloween party or want to market your Larks’ Tongues in Aspic, then by all means, use this font! Bergamot was inspired by vintage apothecary labels, but this font is actually quite modern in both style and effects. It features all caps plus 2 sets of alternates (so, 4 total variations for each letter). The coolest part… they intermingle randomly as you type! Ok, so it’s not exactly random, but that’s the easiest way to explain what you'll see. The letters are actually coded to rotate with their respective alternates. This effect is both useful or can be purely for fun! Let’s talk about the useful part for a sec… Repeating characters are often a dead giveaway that a font is being used. I found that the essence of Erotica, in other words, its ductus was the most responsible. The result is a font made of hairlines with a lot of emphasis on the pureness of the form and, (with a lot of inspiration in music) the sensation of continuity between its letters as if they were written with a string. Rian Hughes’ 15th collection of fonts, “112 Hours”, is entirely dedicated to numbers. Culled from a myriad of sources – clock faces, tickets, watches house numbers – it is an eclectic and wide-ranging set. Each font contains only numerals and related punctuation – no letters. A new book has been designed by Hughes to show the collection, and includes sample settings, complete character sets, source material and an introduction. I was mesmerized by the inventive and bizarre numerals on their faces. Shorn of the need to extend the internal logic of a typeface through the entire alphabet, the designers of these treasures were free to explore interesting forms and shapes that would otherwise be denied them. Given this horological starting point, I decided to produce 12 fonts, each featuring just the numbers from 1 to 12 and, where appropriate, a small set of supporting characters — in most cases, the international currency symbols, a colon, full stop, hyphen, slash and the number sign. 10, 11 and 12 I opted to place in the capital A, B and C slots. Each font is shown in its entirety here. I soon passed 12, so the next logical finish line was 24. Like a typographic Jack Bauer, I soon passed that too -— the more I researched, the more I came across interesting and unique examples that insisted on digitization, or that inspired me to explore some new design direction. The sources broadened to include tickets, numbering machines, ecclesiastical brass plates and more. Though not derived from clock faces, I opted to keep the 1-12 conceit for consistency, which allowed me to design what are effectively numerical ligatures. I finally concluded one hundred fonts over my original estimate at 112. Even though it’s not strictly divisible by 12, the number has a certain symmetry, I reasoned, and was as good a place as any to round off the project. An overview reveals a broad range that nonetheless fall into several loose categories. There are fairly faithful revivals, only diverging from their source material to even out inconsistencies and regularize weighting or shape to make them more functional in a modern context; designs taken directly from the source material, preserving all the inky grit and character of the original; designs that are loosely based on a couple of numbers from the source material but diverge dramatically for reasons of improved aesthetics or mere whim; and entirely new designs with no historical precedent. As projects like this evolve (and, to be frank, get out of hand), they can take you in directions and to places you didn’t envisage when you first set out. Along the way, I corresponded with experts in railway livery, and now know about the history of cab side and smokebox plates; I travelled to the Musée de l’imprimerie in Nantes, France, to examine their numbering machines; I photographed house numbers in Paris, Florence, Venice, Amsterdam and here in the UK; I delved into my collection of tickets, passes and printed ephemera; I visited the Science Museum in London, the Royal Signals Museum in Dorset, and the Museum of London to source early adding machines, war-time telegraphs and post-war ration books. I photographed watches at Worthing Museum, weighing scales large enough to stand on in a Brick Lane pub, and digital station clocks at Baker Street tube station. I went to the London Under-ground archive at Acton Depot, where you can see all manner of vintage enamel signs and woodblock type; I photographed grocer’s stalls in East End street markets; I dug out old clocks I recalled from childhood at my parents’ place, examined old manual typewriters and cash tills, and crouched down with a torch to look at my electricity meter. I found out that Jane Fonda kicked a policeman, and unusually for someone with a lifelong aversion to sport, picked up some horse-racing jargon. I share some of that research here. In many cases I have not been slavish about staying close to the source material if I didn’t think it warranted it, so a close comparison will reveal differences. These changes could be made for aesthetic reasons, functional reasons (the originals didn’t need to be set in any combination, for example), or just reasons of personal taste. Where reference for the additional characters were not available — which was always the case with fonts derived from clock faces — I have endeavored to design them in a sympathetic style. I may even extend some of these to the full alphabet in the future. If I do, these number-only fonts could be considered as experimental design exercises: forays into form to probe interesting new graphic possibilities.

Raw herring is the Dutch sashimi. Every year at the beginning of the summer a new batch of freshly caught herring arrives at Holland’s quays. Fishing boats actually race each other to be the first boat bringing it home. The fresh herring is called ‘Hollandsche Nieuwe’ (Holland’s new). This typeface, designed by Donald Roos, is based on the typography of Dutch fish shops and stalls. Inspired by lettering from the 30’s and 40’s, infused with some ‘techno’ flavour, Hollandsche Nieuwe is the brand new fresh fishy type flavor on your computer! It is traditionally eaten with sliced onions and pickles. Simply pick up the fish by the tail, open your mouth and take a bite! Enjoy!

Minnesota Plaid is the baddest plaid ever! It may not be the choice pattern for golfers' slacks or bagpipers' kilts, but it has a City-like flavor with its own twist, a stylish ruggedness & toughness that could even be described as a sort of formal graffiti, thanks to the art deco swash of many of its strokes. It’s the kind of look that would be perfectly at home with hip hop or rap music, football and other sports, cars and trucks, power tools, and other manly, masculine usages. Straight Line is essentially an outline Modern, but drawn without any curves whatsoever. Thin horizontals and thick verticals provide the classic look of a Didone, updated and enhanced by clean, minimalist geometry. Straight Line is an excellent display face for contemporary, eye-catching headings and sub-headings, and the fonts contain a full complement of Latin Extended-A characters. The typeface was inspired by a 1930s experimental alphabet by the British artist, Percy J Smith.

Lettering found on the cover of the 1923 song "I Love Me (I'm Wild About Myself)" can take on various graphical possibilities. Although its design is Art Nouveau in concept, it is somewhat reminiscent of the "bubble letters" most school kids used to doodle on notebook and portfolio covers; yet the lettering style also evokes the 1960s-70s Hippie movement. As a sidebar, a couple of lines from the song's lyrics were used by Jeff Levine's late mother to chastise him as a youth when he got "a little too full of himself". The lyrics were: "I love me! I love me! I'm wild about myself! I love me! I love me! My picture's on the shelf!"

Cooper Goodtime is a font based on the lettering used on the CBS-TV variety series The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour (1969-1972). The name pays tribute to its two origins, the other being Cooper Black. It was never an actual complete font set on the TV show, only a limited number of handmade letters, all upper case. It has lain dormant since the show went off the air in 1972. With this incarnation, a set of lower case letters has been created to complement the upper case letters. These lower case letters never existed before now. Cooper Goodtime is a funky, nostalgic, cool way to create a display, and it works surprisingly well in text sizes, too.

Draetha is the 6-font companion to Biblia and Biblia Serif. But it is definitely designed to be used with Biblia Serif for book design and production. It is a nearly monoline sans with a clean style which contrast beautifully with Biblia serif. The Black versions push monoline to the extreme of boldness. It has the same font metrics as Biblia and Biblia Serif. The only compromise is that Ultra is too extreme to be able to provide small caps or oldstyle figures. It is designed with text spacing, to work in text with Biblia and Biblia Serif. For heads and subheads, you will need to adjust the tracking. But it tracks well.

Rebus Script is a fun, lively font that lets you create rebus puzzles by automatically replacing certain words or syllables with pictures. This font is an advanced OpenType font that requires an application that supports Contextual Alternates. The font was created by Terrance Weinzierl and is based on the Louisville Script handwriting font designed by Steve Matteson. To use the font you simply type a word like 'sun' or 'son' and those letters will automatically be replaced by a picture of the sun. There are over 70 pictorial symbols in Rebus Script that make up the 'vocabulary' for automatic substitution based on over 300 different syllable/word combinations in various cases (lower, upper, titling) in the English language.

Songs of the early 1900s were anything but the status quo in topic or style. Excessively long titles, novelty tunes and "foreign themes" permeated the piles of sheet music in the local music shops. 1916's "Oh How She Could Yacki Hacki Wicki Wacki Woo (That's Love in Honolu)" covered a number of these quirks within one publication. This Hawaiian-tinged song evoked the mysterious ways of the South Seas islands, despite the abridging of Honolulu to "Honolu". Nonetheless, the hand lettered title of this particular piece of sheet music featured an Art Nouveau-influenced bold block letter with rounded corners. It's now available digitally as Smooth Sailing JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

Drop Cap One is a drop cap or an initial cap font. Even though it has all the letters of the alphabet it is not an alphabet font to be used for headlines or body copy. It has no kerning or punctuation except a period. It does not have accent marks. There are basically 2 alphabets in this font. The lighter letters are lower case and the darker letters are upper case. The light and dark letters are interchangeable. While a fun desktop font the real inspiration for this font was my need for a webfont for initial caps for blogging. It could also make a great scrapbooking font too. Lots of uses for this quirky little font.

1913 Typewriter Carbon is the bold version of GLC foundry's 1913 Typewriter. It is available in two styles: Normal, and Underlined (Bold). It is a complete alphabetic font. It is used as variously as web-site titles, posters design or books editing. It may be preferable, if possible, when printing, to choose a pale color - dark grey instead of heavy black, for exemple - to give a good appearance, just like the real one, and still benefit from the full details. With inkjet printers, it may be used the economic or draft option with a good result too. The old typewriter characters size is 11 or 12 points, but this font supports easily enlargement.

Discórdia is a type-family of contrasting contrasts. Each of the four members of the family has a different contrast type. Regular has broad-nib contrast, Bold has horizontal contrast, the Italic is monoline, which means it has no apparent contrast, and Bold Italic is... Well, it’s probably best if see for yourself. These different design structures were fine-tuned to work well together in the same line, creating emphasis and hierarchy through a mini-super-family that groups a wedge-serif Regular, a slab-serif Bold, a sans-serif-ish Italic and a twisted Bold Italic.
