In my on-going quest for display fonts to be used with my books and on my book covers, I decided I need a squared sans serif. I started the build off of Fiscal, a font I designed back in 2006. I never liked the font, plus my tastes have changed. So, I opened it, made it narrower, increased the x-height, and various stuff like that. I made it much heavier—an ended up with Boxy. Then my brain slapped me and said, "Why don't you make a sorta modern version?" So, I did and decided to call that style Chic. But then I wanted a thin version also. Fiscal was always too heavy and ponderous for me. So, I made the Thin style. Finally, I felt I needed an italic of Chic. OpenType features didn't seem to work well with the family, so all I added was oldstyle figures. So, I ended up with another of my unique families—with two unmodulated fonts: Thin and Medium, and two modulated fonts: Chic and Chic Italic. But, I'm pleased with it. My hope is that you will like it also.

Khatt tries to mimic the concept behind the meaning of the Arabic word Khatt: a straight horizontal line. The word Khatt is also the word for calligraphy in the Arabic language. Even though Khatt is a cursive style font it offers clearly distinguished and visually unified letter shapes in every position of a word. Khatt supports all Arabetic scripts covered by Unicode 6.1, and the latest Arabic Supplement and Extended-A Unicode blocks, including support for Quranic texts. It comes with five weights, regular, medium, bold, light, and ultra-light. Each weight has normal and left-slanted “italic” styles. The script design of this font family follows the Arabetics Mutamathil Taqlidi style and utilizes varying x-heights. The Mutamathil Taqlidi type style uses one glyph per every basic Arabic Unicode character or letter, as defined by the Unicode Standards, and one additional final form glyph, for each freely-connecting letter in an Arabic text. Khatt includes the required Lam-Alif ligatures in addition to all vowel diacritic ligatures. Diaconia Old Style is a new rendition of my workhorse body copy font that I originally designed to use for the body copy of "Printing in a Digital World." I became increasingly upset with the lack of lowercase numbers and true small caps. Diaconia started life as a modification of one of the Dutch Bible fonts I traced. It has changed a lot since then (although I have a hard time telling how much because I have lost the original). The plain and italic work especially well when used in very large sizes as display faces. The other four variants (small caps, heavy, heavy italic, and black) are designed for use in book production. Because I format all my own books, I was able to design fonts that met my needs exactly: lowercase numbers, SMALL CAPS font, Mac Command, Option, and Control symbols, ballot box in the section slot, and several other special characters. DiaconiaPro is the OpenType family of my body copy workhorse. Fixture is our massive 72-font take on plentiful offerings of the late 19th century’s typefaces, posters and wood letterpress sundry done in the Grotesk genre. Four widths ranging from Ultra Compressed to Expanded each come in nine weights and accompanying italics. Some common sans-serif alternates, such as the a and g, are included in all the fonts. The idea with this design was to put together a workhorse font family with enough functional flexibility to work in multiple environments, from the subtlety of magazine layout or film credits to the visual drama of billboards or packaging. Aesthetically speaking, it is quite interesting — though in retrospect quite unintentional — that each different width and/or weight of this face ended up pulling a different dominant trait from the melting-pot origins of the entire family. It’s almost like a tribute album to some famous band’s covers of older songs. It may also be a good conversation piece on our tools shaping the very things for which they’re used. Can’t really get any more post-Grotesk than this. In the 21st century, this is the one genre to rule them all.

Quartal is a family of stylish sans serif typefaces of condensed proportions. The family consists of 5 regular weights, 4 condensed ones and 13 extended styles (7 upright and 6 italic). At first there was intention to release just 4 condensed weights for headlines and advertising texts, but later 5 styles of wider proportions were added. As the result the area of applications becomes much wider due to possibility to use the font for smaller point sizes. The name "Quartal", which in this case means city quarter, according to author's associations emphasizes the advertising nature of the design most suitable to the urban environment. Character set of the fonts covers alphabets of Western Europe and basic Cyrillic languages. In addition, it includes a range of alternatives, especially in Cyrillic part. Design was done by Oleg Karpinsky. Released by ParaType in 2010. Klatter is a font that is "in your face". It can't be ignored, and draws attention to itself no matter how noisy the environment. It continued to be used for the German language until the 20th century. Fakir, a blackletter with a holy kiss is a contemporary interpretation of gone letterforms with origin in blackletters. More precisely, we based the construction on broadnip textura, with lots of broken, edgy, interrupted strokes – try to sit on a nail bed and you’ll know why fakirs like to read just these kind of fonts! After being abandoned for some time (not accepted, nearly forbidden), we would like to give our generation a blackletter from here and now. So Fakir is not a revival, but an all new 21st-century blackletter. Fakir is a set of edgy text and display fonts, ranging from tight and heavy to light and wide.
