I was in a bit of a gloomy mood just before I created this font. I had no inspiration whatsoever (which always affects me in a bad way). I was trying to create a font using broken satay skewers, as using those gives the letters a unique look. I broke about 25 skewers and they all broke ‘the wrong way’. Yes, it’s pathetic, I know, but that’s how it is. I decided to go to the gym and do a little workout, hoping my dark mood would pass. When I came back, I broke one more skewer and lo and behold, it broke exactly the right way! I made this font in one go, using that fantastic skewer and lots of Chinese ink. Darkness Rising comes with all the diacritics you’ll need, plus double letter ligatures and some cool underlined alternates.

Marit Otto about C-Nation: The building typeface. Although the 70ties were very liberating and progressive, still girls played mainly with dolls and sweet things and boys with all kinds of challenging stuff. They did all sorts of basic scientific experiments in mini labs and of course built cool things with Meccano building sets. As a girl I was perfectly happy with the toys I had access to. But at the same time I was very curious about all the adventure toys and discoveries my brother did. It also made me wonder why the grown up people thought that our world could be separated so easily by separating our toys in pink and blue sections. At this day of age Meccano is probably hopelessly old fashioned and far to manual. Children of today are fed by fast images and cool animations on screen, they learn, play, communicate and relax in the same space, the digital space. The special feature of Meccano was that even though it was very basic there was the promise you could create anything. It might even contribute to a logical mind. The typeface I designed refers to the Meccano feel. It is a creative typeface. A bit masculine and bold looking perhaps but after the first impression a subtle and refined female touch is revealed. It has links to architecture and associations with metal constructions like ‘The Eiffel Tower’ and (old railway) bridges. I am convinced that we all think of that as very charming man-made objects.

The Vtg Stencil fonts from astype are based on real world stencils from several countries. The Italian stencils that I chose as a model for this font are roughly based on classic French stencil letters. Please compare the figures (numbers) with their French counterparts. However, the Italian stencils are made with a different production technique. The design of the letters is clearly not punch-cut into the plates, maybe they are drilled, milled or etched. Details such as the serifs look bold and clumsy, and when using the stencils as they are meant, with viscous sign paint, smaller details easily fade away. So I took my freedom to design a font close to the original design but adding several typographic tweaks to let it shine, hoping to get closer to the intended design idea of these Italian stencils. The Face2Face (F2F) series was inspired by the techno sound of the mid-1990s, personal computers and new font creation software. For years, Alexander Branczyk and his friends formed a unique type design collective, which churned out a substantial amount of fresh, new fonts, none of which complied with the traditional rules of typography. Many of these typefaces were used to create layouts for the leading German techno magazine of the 1990s, Frontpage. Branczyk and his fellows would even set in type at 6 points, in order to make it nearly unreadable. It was a pleasure for the kids to read and decrypt these messages! F2F Monako Stoned was inspired by the Apple system font Monaco, and is one of 41 Face2Face fonts included in the Take Type 5 collection from Linotype. Branczyk designed 16 of these himself."

Sydonia Atramentiqua is a strange creation. The inspiration was the first releases of "Malleus Maleficarum" (actually the typography used there). I decided I wanted something strange, so Sydonia came into being. Like a blood of all witches who were being hunted down by Malleus Maleficarum's "fans" for their skills and beliefs. Why Sydonia? Sydonia von Borck was a witch from my area. It was probably the last woman executed for witchcraft. The genesis of the name. Sydonia was THE WITCH, and by the name I added "Atramentiqua". It is a combination of the words "Ink" (polish "ATRAMENT") + "Antiqua". The idea of ​​spilling a font is historical. The former Zecer composition was not perfectly sharp. As it was a "wet job", there were always light exits behind the lines. Who supported me? The GENEALOGIA project has been carried out for several years in cooperation with the Academy of Art in Szczecin and the National Museum in Szczecin. The project's supervisors are prof. Noyh is a modern geometric font family that is based on research of similar typefaces of the 1990s and 2000s. Based on that research, font designer Chatnarong Jingsuphatada created a design whose main purpose is to perform equally well in as many environments as possible. Noyh offers a geometric structure with smooth corners, giving it great legibility and making it clean and friendly. As a result, Noyh works well both in print and on screen; it can be used freely for e-books and mobile applications and is perfect for headlines, banners, posters, web-sites, magazines, etc. Perhaps the greatest advantage of Noyh is the stunning number of fonts it includes. There are no less than 72 fonts, each containing over 350 glyphs. The family has 4 formats – Normal, Rounded, Slim and Slim Rounded. Lumina combines a fluid, informal look with an upright, fairly formal character structure. The font is reminiscent of leaded or stained glass, suggesting a trying to-be-solid outline with flowing inner spaces. Characters are softened by the use of staggered heights and slightly irregular widths, creating the impression of hand-crafted, ink-drawn shapes. Lumina is unusual in that it gives a medieval treatment to a modern character outline. The outline has been given an irregular, slightly hand-crafted look that is at variance with its modern character and hints at both the informality of a grunge font and the carefully hand-drawn quality of medieval illuminated scripts (hence its name). It is one of the few informal, compressed fonts that retains a high degree of legibility. Use it when you want your text to be both relaxed and readable, and yet take up very little space on the page. Lumina Regular is not an outline font in the usual sense, since it contains one or more rounded hollows or lacunae within its outline. Tetria was designed by Martin Jagodzinski, who says that the font came from the need for a compact, constructivist typeface. Tetria combines the expression of simplicity of the 'norm' typefaces like DIN Mittelschrift with elements of Old Face typefaces which optimize legibility. It therefore contains old style figures and a larger stroke contrast, which makes the font legible even in smaller point sizes." Sources of inspiration for Tetria were the designs of Joost Schmidt and Herbert Bayer as well as the norm typefaces. The name comes from the Greek word for 'four', tetra. "Four is the number of many simple and useful objects, four wheels on a car, four corners of a book. Also, the basic forms of Tetria come from the simple geometric form of the square." Started during 2012, LCT Palissade is a letter type belonging to the Didone classification. It takes over the Italian characters from the XVII century. Century affected by a huge artistic and industrial mutation, we assist to the eruption of the railroad network and Turner’s paintings. In typography, the Didones(XVIIe) begins to concede the place to the Egyptians XIXe. We noticed an evolution to rectangular drawings, that were heavier and darker. LCT Palissade is in fact the study of a history flow, crossing through the industrial revolution and romanticism; the result of a strong letter type, solid, strict the drawing is orientated towards very dark, reminiscent of the characters beginning XIXe. The serifs are the summary between the British characters from the end of (XVIe) and the Italian ones beginning of (XVIIe). Originally released in 2008, Churchward Newstype is a workhorse text family, designed by the late Joseph Churchward back in the early 2000’s. If you’re familiar with Churchward’s typefaces, you might know that he always brought a little something quirky to his designs. Churchward Newstype doesn’t disappoint.
