The history of Able’s connection with the Harry Potter phenomenon is really up in the air. It’s a catch-22 in this business - you either promote your own work and negotiate expensive exclusive licenses, or you work with a promoter and sell your designs to anyone and everyone. It could have been an in-house designer at Rowling’s publisher, Scholastic, or a freelancer who proposed Able for the headings and such. The responsible party licensed it from T26, and JK Rowling’s storytelling made it a star. (I suppose it’s ironic that there’s a whole lot of unwritten history in the typography business.) Able’s rise to fame really is a classic love story between reading and type design. If the books weren’t so popular, Able might still be waiting for some Mexican fast food chain to pick it up for packaging design. The movie deal certainly made the font all the more recognizable, what with its merchandising campaign. Popularity can also cripple a great decorative face. It’s always being recognized as “The Harry Potter Font.” It might just have to wait a few decades for the Potter phenomenon to subside to be freed from the “Chamber of Pigeonholed Fonts.” In the meantime, I’m sure that a lot of fledgling graphic design apprentices are reading their new Potter books, being charmed by the idea of type design when they’re not turning the pages too fast to notice.

Kis Classico™ is named after the Hungarian monk Miklós Kis who traveled to Amsterdam at the end of the seventeenth century to learn the art of printing. Amsterdam was a center of printing and punchcutting, and Kis cut his own type there in about 1685. For centuries, Kis's type was wrongly attributed to Anton Janson, a Dutch punchcutter who worked in Leipzig in the seventeenth century. Most versions of this type still go by the name Janson. In 1993, the Italian/Swedish type designer Franko Luin completed Kis Classico, his own contemporary interpretation of the Kis types. About the Kis/Janson story, Luin says: If you understand Hungarian I recommend you read the monograph, 'Tótfalusi Kis Miklós' by György Haiman, published in 1972 by Magyar Helikon. It has hundreds of reproductions from his Amsterdam period and from the time when he was an established printer in Kolozsvár (today's Cluj in Romania)." Kis Classico has five weights, and is an admirable version of this classic type.

This is Alter Littera’s first original design. The font has been created by attempting not to reproduce any historical typeface in particular, but only to re-create the overall forms and style of classic black-letters from different time periods and places. Two specific sources must be acknowledeged nonetheless: (1) the “Black” type from William Caslon’s A Specimen of Printing Types (1785), and (2) the “Caslon Gotisch” type by D. Stempel A.G. (1926). In addition to the usual standard characters for typesetting in modern Western languages, the font includes a comprehensive set of special characters, alternates and ligatures, plus Opentype features, that can be used for typesetting as in antique writings and printings. The glyphs are clean, smooth and definitely readable, so the font will be suitable not only for large titles and headings, but also for full text pages. Marconi was created by Hermann Zapf in 1973. According to Gerard Unger, it was the world's first digital typeface. Zapf’s design was developed as a text face for books and magazines. The round forms of the Marconi follow the principle of the superellipse. The lowercase letters are enlarged as the result of reading tests, while the capital letters are slightly reduced. The 8-point size — normally used for newspapers — looks more like 9 1/2 points. Marconi is a legible typeface with its large and open lowercase letters. It is ideal for long text blocks in newspaper, book, and magazine production.

Linotype Laika is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. This fun font was created by Dutch designer Mark van Wageningen, who based its forms on those of a sans serif font but gave them wavy, irregular contours. They look almost as though they lie just under the surface of a pool and the movement of the water gives them their undulating appearance. The dynamic Linotype Laika is especially good for headlines in larger point sizes or shorter texts in point sizes of 14 or larger.

Linotype Beluga is a part of the Take Type Library, winners of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contest. The font was designed by Hans-Jürgen Ellenberger to suggest the writing of the Middle Ages but without any specific models from that time. A distinguishing characteristic of the font is its pointed, effusive serifs, which give Beluga its feel of the Middle Ages or of mysticism. In spite of its dynamic character, Beluga is legible even in smaller point sizes, which makes it equally good for headlines as for shorter texts. Beluga combines well with sans serif, slab serif and constructed fonts.

Alizé is a three-weight typeface inspired by the chancery italic of the 16th century. It is a high-contrast face, created with syncopations in axes and proportions and subtle irregularities that form a lively and delicate weave, suitable for setting a single word, a special expression, or a short block of prose. The family does not contain a roman, and instead promotes the italic as a primary style, a common printing convention in the 16th and 17th centuries. The italic lowercase predates inclined capitals by about twenty years, and as a nod to this typographic evolution, Alizé’s capitals, small capitals, and figures are very slightly inclined to match the energy of the lowercase. The low x-height and long ascenders and descenders, features associated with finesse and luxury, are reminiscent of the Venetian-style italic, but are further emphasised. Unlike the Venetian italic, however, Alizé has a sharp slope, giving a prominent sweep across the page (alizé is the name of trade wind). Each font of Alizé has a character set count of exceeding 700, and contains an abundance of ligatures, dynamic fractions, ornaments, and pan-European language support. They have also been manually hinted for the highest-quality display on both print and screen.
