Here is a profoundly delicate and graceful design that has its roots in art deco fashion. This elegant typeface is based on an old 1930s lettering style popularized by Carl Holmes in his wonderful book on the subject. Somewhat condensed with a very tall lowercase, Panorama carries itself beautifully. It is similar to such classics as Stellar and Optima with stems flaring slightly at the ends. When I released Halogen, I asked ‘Who doesn't want or need an expansive contemporary extended sans that has a sense of style and swagger… what if it had a lowercase, small caps and various numeral options… how could you say no?’ Go, click on the Halogen link and read on, if you're interested. Halogen was well-received, so I decided to take it further with Halogen Flare (the name kinda tips you off as to what kind of typeface it is, don't ya think?). As always, I prefer not to take short cuts and provide an anemic offering of glyphs — a modern typeface offered today must provide more than just the basics and this one does — lowercase, smallcaps, old style numerals, tabular forms, stylistic and titling alternates, fractions, case-sensitive features, and even an alternate uppercase ordinal set is included. I bought a new coffee machine - the piston variety. It is shiny, made in Italy and I can make a killer espresso or latte with it. I usually start off the day with a pour over coffee and save my milky coffee for later. I also have two grinders: one for a coarse grind (pour over) and one for a finer grind (espresso and latte). Yes, you will probably say that it’s quite extravagant to have two grinders, but I do like my coffee! Anyways, this is what I thought of when I worked on Coarse Grind. Coarse Grind is a well balanced all caps display font. It comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.

Nono is the nickname of my oldest son, Konstantin. His little brother could not really speak yet, but he was always looking for him and said something to the tune of, "wea is a nono". From that time on I call Konstantin Nono. I designed a handwritten script with his real name, that i named Konstantin. Now I made this slick version of that script – hence – Nono! I made three basic sets of characters plus a smallcaps version. To top things off, I designed a set of endletters that I throw in for free. Everything can be mixed! This American original was designed in 1901 by Frederic W. Goudy for the American Type Founders in Jersey City. Copperplate Gothic is an all caps font which looks like a sans serif at first glance. But closer examination reveals tiny, pointy serifs which almost seem to round off the letters. Designers rely on this font’s lofty and sublime impression and it is often seen in advertisements, but it has also made a place for itself in private and business correspondence and corporate design. The AB and BC designations in the style names refer to the relative sizes of the capitals and small capitals.

Phiz is a diverse suite of 28 decorative fonts based on Figgins Sans Extra Bold. Classic (10 fonts), Rounded (7 fonts), Rough (4 fonts) and Particles (7 fonts). The Rough and Particles styles emerge as a unique niche—neither imitating distressed printing (e.g. the “rusty” look), nor casual, hand-drawn styles. These type designs are conceived and executed as complex algorithmically-generated graphic procedures, in which repetitive elements have been artfully applied to the Sans capitals, and manually nuanced. As such they also differ substantially from textured glyph shapes that have been cut out from larger pattern fields, for the constituent particles are disposed in relation to the specific shape of each character they define. The caps-with-small-caps format was chosen for two reasons. Firstly, titling display usage is predominantly capitals, and secondly, rather like optical scaling, having the same resolution of texture available in two different “sizes” (upper and lower case) should prove useful in the hierarchy of page layout—not primarily for setting upper and lower case text as caps-with-small-capitals, although this is of course an option. CushingTwo is the 6-font family designed for Fontographer: Practical Font Design for Graphic Designers: Regular, Oblique, Demi, DemiOblique, Bold, and BoldOblique. The two Demi variants will be listed separately in InDesign and the Creative Suite to keep things compatible with Office and such. The inspiration was a scan of the old Cushing No. 2 font in Felici's article on CreativePro about 100 year oldtype. It's a fun, open, large OpenType font of 370 characters with oldstyle figures, small caps, and small cap figures. It needs polishing, but it's good looking.

ITC Motter Sparta is the work of Austrian designer Othmar Motter and for its inspiration, he turned to car design. As we all know, trends in car design affect many other fields of design in a way that shapes tastes." At the end of the 1990s, Motter saw the trend moving away from soft lines and toward a tighter, tenser look: "In this latest trend, sharp clearly-defined edges meet broadly-drawn, dynamic curves and cut them off sharply." And so too is ITC Motter Sparta, with each character form distinct, which also creates a typeface instantly recognizable from a single character. "The sharp straight strokes, cut off almost at right angles, and the strong cross-stroke curves, ending in points, form a charged contrast to the vertical and horizontal straight strokes that give Motter sparta its taut framework.""

The first photo-typesetting machine in operation, the Uhertype, was introduced in 1925. It was a combination of manual phototypesetting machine and make-up machine. The machine’s typefaces were designed by Jan Tschichold. The patents on Uhertype were bought up at the time to prevent the invention of filmsetting spreading. Jan Tschichold has been very influenced by Gill Sans (1928) for this humanistic sans serif drawn in 1933/36 for Uhertype.
