I have always loved gazing at the stars. Too bad that you don’t get to see a true starry night these days - mostly because of light pollution. Starlight Lovers is a messy serif. It is hand painted, using a brush and Chinese ink, so the edges may be a bit rough. In my opinion, this adds to the font’s character! In English folklore (in particular that of Yorkshire and Lancashire), Grindylow is a creature that dwells in rivers and lakes and is said to grab children who come too close to the water’s edge and drown them. It is thought the name Grindylow may be connected to the monster Grendel. Grindylow font does not grab children; it is a rather messy handmade brush font. I used a cheap brush and Chinese ink to create the glyphs. Comes with discretionary double letter ligatures for the lower case.

The Troyer AR ornaments are based on the first series of ornaments designed for American Type Founders by Johannes Troyer (1902-69). They were cast in 36 and 48 point in 1953 by ATF who said that they ‘mark a distinct and refreshing departure from the motif of earlier ornaments, and add a crisp touch to your finer printing’. Kenneth Day, in The Typography of Press Advertisement (1956), found them 'clean-cut and bright and clearly showing their calligraphic origins . . . useful for single decorative touches'.

Neo Sans began as an intriguing assignment from a branding agency. The agency’s client wanted an “ultra modern” type family that was "futuristic without being gimmicky or ephemeral.” When a bureaucratic decision cancelled the project, Monotype staff designer Sebastian Lester decided to finish the design on his own. “I was left with a sketchbook full of ideas,” he said, “and thought it would be a shame not to see what came of them.” Lester decided that the principal ingredient of an "ultra modern" typeface was simplicity of character structure: a carefully drawn, monoline form, open letter shapes and smooth, strong curves. By further amplifying these qualities, he crossed the line from modern to futuristic. Two highly functional and versatile typefaces emerged. These are Neo Sans and Neo Tech, designs Lester describes as "legible without being neutral, nuanced without being fussy, and expressive without being distracting." Both the Neo Sans and the more minimalist Neo Tech families are available in six weights, ranging from Light to Ultra, with companion italics. Neo Tech offers a suite of alternate characters.

The design of the Newspoint typeface is based on the tradition of the American sans serif faces of the last century. This form expression was greatly influenced by the News Gothic type which was created by Morris Fuller Benton in 1908, and has, once again, become very popular. When the development of sans serif types such as Futura and Kabel by Renner and Koch began in 1925, the design of American sans serif types receded somewhat into the background. In the 1950’s, however, they experienced a renaissance which continues to this day. Thanks to its clean design and the relatively large x-height, the Newspoint is well suited for informative texts in newspapers, magazines, and brochures. In packaging design, as well, the Newspoint can display its strength in small print. Newspoint was developed as a customer-specific variation of the News Gothic. In contrast to the News Gothic, however, the face appears to be softer and more appealing thanks to the changed interpunctions. If so desired, the alternative characters give the typeface expanded individuality and a richness of design options.

This is an American face designed by Lucian Bernhard for ATF in 1929. An extra light face with tall ascenders and stylized bars that extend off to the left. The lower-case sits on the baseline and the much-taller-than-normal capitals have an imaginary baseline that sits about two-thirds of the distance from the real baseline to the bottom of the EM.

Lens Grotesk is a Neo-grotesque type family of 16 fonts born as a result of a very conscious research in the field of the neutral Swiss aesthetic. There's a reason for all the prominent examples of this design like Helvetica and Univers to be used on a daily basis for more than 70 years and it's a simple one - they just work. The closed terminals, the low contrast, uniform widths and proportions makes the Neo-grotesques feel just right. Although very often branded as stiff, the neutral Neo grotesques are here to stay and Lens Grotesk is our own reading of the popular style. Whether you call them slab serif, square serif, or Egyptian, you know them when you see them – sturdy, nearly monoweight designs with blunt, straight-edged serifs and a no-nonsense attitude. Paralucent is versatile all-purpose modern sans. Available in seven weights, from Thin to Heavy, and in two widths each with corresponding italics, it avoids some of the more eccentric calligraphic quirks of Akzidenz or Helvetica or the cool precision of Univers for an elegant, functional, yet warm design. There are two additions to the core 28-weight family: a three-weight stencil set, and a four weight text family. The text weights have been adjusted for use at small point sizes, and feature more open character shapes, looser inter-letter spacing for improved readability, and lining numerals for use in listings and tables. Now largely redundant due to the high quality of modern print, they are still sometimes used as a stylistic quirk or design feature. Now that digital fonts are often reversed or outlined, or enlarged to enormous sizes, these can also lead to unexpected or obtrusive results. Paralucent takes these inevitable digital manipulations into account, and adds optical corrections without resort to ink traps. The family has been picked up by many UK and US publishers, featuring heavily in magazines like Loaded, Heat and TV Quick, as well as high-end coffee-table photography books and gallery websites. Our notes say this was originated at the Barnhart Bros. & Spindler foundry in Chicago, and named Cable. Perhaps so, but we didn't find it in any of our BB&S catalogs. We made a few changes to improve the color.
