ITC Gema is the work of Brazilian graphic designer Claudio Rocha. It was first written in a small size to keep the surface irregularity of a non-coated paper when enlarged for use as a display font," says Rocha. Many strokes do not quite join, giving Gema the visual effect of a stencil typeface, the distinguishing characteristic of the font. Rinzler AOE is a revival of a LetterGraphics film type called Caren. A modular, mechanical, sans-serif stencil all rolled up into one retro typeface. It's not an all-purpose typeface, it's not an everyday typeface, but it is a cool typeface for the right design projects. Rinzler AOE carries itself with a bold weighted style, and stencil cutouts that don't follow standard stencil formatting. It might be considered more of a techno stencil (if there is such a thing). It reminded me in a vague way of TRON, hence the main poster graphic styling, although it looks NOTHING like the Tron titling typeface. One of my guilty pleasures is in taking the time to recreate historical typefaces as digital fonts, but a lot of incredible historical typestyles created as wood or metal or film type usually have bare bones character sets and have been lost or only exist as limited specimen proofs in old books. These typefaces may have more niché uses than modern typefaces, but I believe it is important nonetheless to preserve these typefaces for future generations. These typefaces, if nothing else, can often inspire new creations.

Axiforma was designed with the single idea of creating a font that starts with the letter A, because let's face it, this is the best letter. For those of you who didn't see it coming, Axiforma is a /drum roll/ geometric sans in 20 weights. If you are thinking "Oh boy, another geometric sans", you clearly know your stuff. Who doesn't want or need an expansive contemporary extended sans that has a sense of style and swagger… what if it had a lowercase, small caps and various numeral options… how could you say no? This was the foundational argument I made for myself when I drew the initial alphabet on my birthday last year (something I do each year, draw a new font, kind of a fun OCD thing). I wanted to see a wide, utilitarian sans that had more to it than just a basic character set and didn't resemble standard geometric models. As I continued sketching, the letterforms were being influenced more by my 'lettering tendencies' than the normal mechanical trappings of drawing flat, wide letters. The letters have retained aspects of letters created by hand — stresses, modulation, naturally ending terminals. Truncation and quick clipping of strokes became antithetical to the letterforms I drew, so I continued this once I brought the design into the computer. I kept it precise and dependable, but made every attempt to keep a conscientiously crafted typeface and not let it devolve into a grid-based drone. As such, it works just as well looking back in time as much as it does assuming a lead role in a sci-fi movie. Halogen does deliver and opts not to take a short cut and provide an anemic offering of glyphs — a modern typeface offered today must provide more than just the basics and this one does — lowercase, smallcaps, old style numerals, tabular forms, stylistic and titling alternates, fractions, case-sensitive features, and even an alternate uppercase ordinal set is included. So go make cool print and digital things with it, now.

Eckhardt Titling JNL is another treatment of a popular typeface that lends itself well to the hand-lettered sign and display work of days past. A clean sans serif with a slight touch of Art Deco, this font renders well from small point sizes to large posters. As with other fonts in this series, it is named in honor of Jeff Levine’s good friend Albert Eckhardt, Jr. who owned Allied Signs in Miami, Florida from 1959 until his passing.

Designed for ParaType in 2007 by Isabella Chaeva. The type is based on Bukvarnaya (TextBook) photocomposing version designed in 1987 by Emma Zakharova. The initial Bukvarnaya for metal composition was created at Polygraphmash in 1958 by Elena Tsaregorodtseva. It was developed for primers and the first level school textbooks. An early sans serif ('Grotesque') with half-closed static letterforms. For use in book and magazine typography, advertising and headlines. Also may be useful as screen font.

Portsmouth is a strong, sturdy typeface with historical character. Its inspiration comes from the height and strength of the wooden tall ships that sailed into port in their day. With caps and small caps, this typeface is great for headlines or subheads for design projects that need a historical or retro feel, such as from the 1940s and earlier. Seven different styles that can be layered allow for different colored drop shadows, outlines and fill for even more customization.

Buttered Toast is something a lot of people enjoy every day; when I was working on this font I was hoping to create something similar: an uncomplicated font enjoyed by many. The resulting typeface is exactly what is promised on the package: Buttered Toast is unobtrusive, yet quite refined. It may even be taken for granted, but I sure hope it will be used and enjoyed by many. Buttered Toast comes with a generous helping of diacritics.

Bushman a font with capitals and decorative foliage letters. It works pretty simply - just type a word as usual with first capital letter, and it will automatically make the first two letters with growing leaves. The second big part of this set is a supporting font Bushman Sans. It's a modern grotesque font with 7 weight variations. I have been making some clean, connected fonts lately and when I was working on another one of these, I felt the need for something chaotic. So, Scapegoat was born. I used a round nibbed steel pen and Chinese ink and the result is quite a messy font. It may look chaotic, but as Nietzsche once said: ‘from chaos comes order’. Amen to that! Comes with double letter ligatures for the lower case and a whole lot of diacritics.

In ye olden days, nothing said “personalized business correspondence” like a typewritten letter, and several type foundries cast simulated typewriter fonts so authentic-looking “personal” letters could be mass-produced. This typeface is based on one such font from a href="/foundry/atf/">American Type Founders, which was patterned after the letters of the Smith Premier No. 3. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin and 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan) character sets.

Mellnik is a sans serif of humanist style (in a way) that was developed by Oleg Karpinsky for ParaType in 2006. Yumo is a new, textured remix of the original 2010 Yume typeface, and has plenty to offer of its own. I bought a new coffee machine - the piston variety. It is shiny, made in Italy and I can make a killer espresso or latte with it. I usually start off the day with a pour over coffee and save my milky coffee for later. I also have two grinders: one for a coarse grind (pour over) and one for a finer grind (espresso and latte). Yes, you will probably say that it’s quite extravagant to have two grinders, but I do like my coffee! Anyways, this is what I thought of when I worked on Coarse Grind. Coarse Grind is a well balanced all caps display font. It comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.
