In 1994 I took a picture of an old movie marquee in Times Square, New York City. 7 years later, I decided to design a typeface based on the big plastic letters found in those old marquees. I scanned in the picture I took and began to draw the letterforms. Like most of my font designs, the initial inspiration came from an urban environment.

This big family summarizes and develops the tradition of boldface squared-off 45° shear sanserifs. Known from the middle of 19th century and actively used in different times (1920s, 1970s) is still usable now, thanks to its brutal expression, monumentality and possibility to fully maximize the flatness without loss of readability. This font is especially good for filling letters with photos or to create geometrical “constructivist” compositions.

Lodestone is a sans serif decorative typeface, and was created by Steve Jackaman (ITF) in 2017. The original design was known as ‘Marvin,’ and was created by Face Photosetting (London) in the early 1970’s. Since the name ‘Marvin’ was in use by another foundry at time of publication, ‘Lodestone’ was born. Lodestone has a clean, retro feel, and is electrifying at display sizes.

Karaoke JNL is one of the many alphabets created by the late Alf R. Becker that was showcased in Signs of the Times magazine from the 1930s through the 1950s. ITC Kristen is the work of American designer George Ryan. He describes it as not your average text or display font." The inspiration for the design came from the handwritten menu at a neighborhood restaurant. With time, the forms moved away from the originals and towards something more like a child's scrawl. Frederic Goudy joined Lanston as art advisor in 1920. One of his first initiatives was to design a new version of Garamond based on original Garamond designs of 1540. Goudy intended his free-hand drawings to be cut exactly as he had drawn them and fought with the workmen at Lanston to keep them from “correcting” his work. This new type was called Garamont (an acceptable alternate spelling) to distinguish it from other Garamonds on the market. (The other Garamonds on the market at that time were later confirmed to be the work of Jean Jannon.) In 2001, Jim Rimmer digitized Garamont in two weights. The display weight is based on the actual metal outlines to compensate slightly for the ink gain that occurs with letterpress printing. The text weight is a touch heavier and more appropriate for general offset and digital text work. Digital Garamont is available to the public for the first time in 2005.

The term “Surf Bum” was a slang phrase used to casually describe anyone who spent as much of their time as possible at the beach catching waves in the 1960s. The Revell Company was a well-established maker of plastic model kits such as military airplanes, monsters from Universal horror films and other such items when it hooked up with custom car designer Ed “Big Daddy” Roth to develop a model kit line capitalizing on the surfing fad that was sweeping the West Coast at the time. A number of crazy-looking hot rods, dune buggies and what-have-you were turned out, and one such kit (“Surfite”, with Figure) featured a futuristic one-person dune buggy. It was on the box for the model that the words “with Figure” appear in a casual, brush design type face. Those few letters were the inspiration for creating a new retro type face entitled Surf Bum JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Katsudon is a Japanese crumbed and deep fried pork cutlet, typically served on rice with egg drizzled over it. There is also a chicken variety. I have been to Japan numerous times (it is my favourite country) and each time I revelled in the great variety of foods being served in street stalls and hole-in-the-wall eateries. I especially love the grandma-and-grandpa eateries that are tucked away in alleys behind the major shopping streets. They never speak English and my Japanese is shaky (to say the least), but the food is always good and we always seem to understand each other. The Latin, or Roman, alphabet was originally adapted from the Etruscan alphabet during the 7th century BC to write Latin. Since then it has had many different forms, and been adapted to write many other languages. According to Roman legend, the Cimmerian Sibyl, Carmenta, created the Latin alphabet by adapting the Greek alphabet used in the Greek colony of Cumae in southern Italy. This was introduced to Latium by Evander, her son. 60 years after the Trojan war. Giambattista is a long-time project of mine finally come to an end. After redesigning all of Giambattista Bodoni's work and then some additional cuts I started a long time ago with this Non-Bodoni Bodoni. The idea came to me while redesigning the original Chancellerosa (chancery). I thought Bodoni just didn't have the right approach to a chancery, this was just not his cup of tea! Maybe that is why he never used the Chancellerosa very much for his own printshop in Parma. So I thought someone has to design a script, that looks like Bodoni could have designed it but is more lively than his. Over the years I have been working on and off on the face and it turned out to become three typefaces which can be freely mixed. Here is my modern version of a script in the style of Giambattista, meant as an hommage, I called it Giambattista. Your modern scribe Gert Wiescher

This series, with 104 illustrations in three files, collects original ink drawings with absurdities, bizarre people, whimsical personalities and risky behaviors! There is a very peculiar sense of narrative in the sucession of characters, even if they came out rather spontaneously and their order is random.With a vintage look and feel, these people seem to come out of a time capsule from Victorian times. Almost everything in the Bizarries (and also in their close relatives, our Illustries, Whimsies, Ombres, Absurdies and Genteta dingbats) is invented and drawn with no references —just a handful of images were sketched from historical photography. These illustrations can be very useful for a variety of projects, either in black and white, or colored in a paint or drawing application. I spend a lot of time following two obsessions: packaging and hand lettering. Alongside a few other minor obsessions, those two have been my major ones for so many years now, I've finally reached the point where I can actually claim them as “obsessions” without getting a dramatic reaction from the little voice in the back of my head. When you spend so much time researching and studying a subject, you become very focused, directionally and objectively. But of course some of the research material you run into turns out to be tangential to whatever your focus happens to be at the time, so you absorb what you can from it, then shelf it — like the celebrity bobblehead that amused you for a while, but is now an almost invisible ornament eating dust and feathers somewhere in your environment. And just like the bobblehead may fall off the shelf one day to remind you of its existence, some of my lettering research material unveiled itself in my head one day for no particular reason. Hand lettering is now mostly perceived as an American art. Someone with my historical knowledge about lettering may be snooty enough to go as far as pointing out the British origins of almost everything American, including lettering — but for the most part, the contemporary perspective associates great lettering with America. The same perspective also associates blackletter, gothics and sans serifs with Germany. So you can imagine my simultaneous surprise and impatience when, in my research for one of my American lettering-based fonts, I ran into a German lettering book from 1953, by an artist called Bentele. It was no use for me because it didn't propel my focus at that particular time, but a few months ago I was marveling at what we take for granted — the sky is blue, blackletter is German, lettering is American — and found myself flipping through the pages of that book again. The lettering in that book is upbeat and casual sign making stuff, but it has a slightly strange and youthful experimentation at its heart. I suppose I find it strange because it deviates a lot from the American stuff I'm used to working with for so long now. To make a long story short, what’s inside that German book served as the semilla, which is Spanish for seed, for the typeface you see all over these pages. With Semilla, my normal routine went out the window. My life for a while was all Bezier all the time. No special analog or digital brushes or pens were used in drawing these forms. They're the product of a true Bezier process, all starting with a point creating a curve to another point, which draws a curve to another point, and so on. It’s a very time-consuming process, but at the end I am satisfied that it can get to pretty much the same results easier and more traditional methods accomplish. And as usual with my fonts, the OpenType is plenty and a lot of fun. Experimenting with substitution and automation is still a great pleasure for me. It is the OpenType that always saves me from the seemingly endless work hours every type designer must inevitably have to face at one point in his career.
