Several years ago I was faced with a project that required very small type to be used in a directory. In general, there was a need for a lot of 'fine print'. Faced with this, all of the tests I was making with existing faces were producing too much bleed of the individual glyphs...Cynapse was born. It evolved into this pseduo-techy looking type that standardized and glorified the ink trap (the small, tiny allowances of white space that reduces the amount of ink hitting the page, and in effect, reducing the appearance of bleed). The results was promising. The new OT version contains additional OpenType features that include expanded ligature sets, fractions, 5 sets of numerals as well as small caps and Central European diacritics.

Engria is a type family of four weights with corresponding italics that treads the fine line between sans and serif. There are serifs, of a sort, inspired by the brush. Not the marks made by a brush, but the actual splayed shape the bristles make when clamped together. Wedge-like chunks that resemble engraved forms, as the name Engria hints at. But it also has the appearance of a stressed, flared sans. This mixed approach lends a unique voice. Highly legible at text sizes, as indeed it is optimized for, Engria does however shine at display sizes thanks to its characteristic details – flared stems, angular counterforms, rugged ink traps and fluid curves. (I would recommend tracking it a little tighter at larger sizes.) Engria started life way back in 2014, and has been worked and reworked tirelessly to get to this finished product. My intent was to really push the idea of the white shapes being as important, if not more so, than the black. Engria is equipped for typographically demanding applications, boasting as it does an array of OpenType features, including small caps, automatic fractions, stylistic sets, various figure styles, arrows, case sensitive forms and more. It will make a very useful addition to your typographic arsenal, with a flare (ahem) for editorial work, but the individuality for packaging, branding, and logo work.

I was listening to some old Smashing Pumpkins albums when I created this font. The name comes from a song called *** You (An Ode To No One). Runaround Kid is a hand painted typeface. To describe what inspired Magneta would be to add a little Dwiggins, throw in some Benton with a hint of Austin, wrap it up in a crisp, contemporary package and serve. The skeleton of the family is a Garalde (like my earlier Epic) but with a desire to produce something much more transitional and contemporary, I sought to simplify, simplify, simplify. Cap and ascenders share the same height, the x-height is slightly larger than expected which should make a functional typeface for editorial, headlines or where more visually complex systems are needed. The modulation is much more intentional than historical and creates some interesting interactions between the various weights. There are both Normal and Condensed widths available with 6 different weights and matching italics, small caps, oldstyle figures, swashes, stylistic and discretionary ligatures (that includes some fun majuscule ligatures in the roman styles), there is no lack of typographic goodness for the designer. To add some spice, a set of Decorative Ornaments have been created that include geometric, floral, curvilinear patterns and much more.

Switched On and Switched Off where two fonts developed by placing points on a pre-defined square grid template. The experiment was to explore all the variations possible by just using straight connecting lines on a grid. I stumbled on the final concept, almost accidentally, and was amazed by the numerous possibilities. Both designs where created to work together. By adjusting the stroke and inline proportions between the two fonts, I was able to achieve a good overall color balance between 'Switched On' (dark letters on a light background), and the 'Switched Off' design as a knockout treatment (light letters on a dark background). Used in this way, both fonts visually appear similar in overall weight and proportion. They harmonize well together. Used separately, they make for some interesting visual effects and headline treatments. The fonts are best used at large point sizes, but they are still legible in a variety of smaller sizes. I think that by experimenting with these two fonts one can achieve some stunning visual effects. Explore and have fun.
