ITC Gema is the work of Brazilian graphic designer Claudio Rocha. It was first written in a small size to keep the surface irregularity of a non-coated paper when enlarged for use as a display font," says Rocha. Many strokes do not quite join, giving Gema the visual effect of a stencil typeface, the distinguishing characteristic of the font. "Some characters have my own handwriting gestures," says Rocha, like elongated endings and angular shapes. Gema comes complete with an unusual variety of ligatures and alternate characters."

The Chrysler Building's decorative motif acted as the formal language that inspired the Linotype Spitz typeface. Linotype Spitz is a combination of pointed and semicircular elements that develop their own aesthetic value in their interplay. Neither the Chrysler Building nor the Linotype Spitz is designed on the basis of geometric rules; they both take account of optical phenomena in their design. Linotype Spitz is characterized by its elegant appearance, due to its exceptionally fine and pointed design. The font is ideal for posters and advertising.

Charles W. "Plot" Plotner was a cartoonist who had developed a template-based cartooning set for kids circa 1952 called "Plot-O". A companion set was called "Plot-O the Clown". "Plot-O" consisted of two plastic templates with pre-cut and numbered cartoon shapes. By following the simple directions and tracing the corresponding parts, any youngster could create basic cartoons of people and finish them off with their own details. The hand-lettered instruction booklet provided the design inspiration for Cartoon Panel JNL.

Around the turn of the 20th Century, the Inland Type Foundry produced a display face named Studley. It was a variation on a design by another foundry called Florentine. A condensed face with a bold, clean look, the design resembled the warmth and feel of a classic wood type. Best applied to headlines and titles, the font reads amazingly well at even 18 point renderings. Jeff Levine had added his own personal touch to his digital version of this old favorite and renamed it Bayview JNL.

Lumios Brush is a new addition to the Lumios Extended Font Family. It was written with Pilot Brush Pen on a glossy paper (which allows a really smooth brush movements) and then carefully digitized. Just like Lumios Marker, its Brush sibling has multilingual (including basic cyrillic) support. Generisch Mono is a monospaced version of Generisch Sans. Drone is a deliberately misproportioned typeface, inspired by hand-drawn lettering found in Spanish/Hispanic Catholic churches in the Philippines and Los Angeles. These naive letterforms appeared to be ‘copies of copies’ – and in aiming to recreate the beauty of the Vatican and the Sistine Chapel they instead created something unique with its own charm and beauty. As a curious aside, the forms are reminiscent of those found in 16th century English calligraphy too. Drone is available in two styles: No.666 and No.90210.

Way back before digital imaging, video tape and computer editing, the home movie enthusiast had to shoot on film his own titles using any one of a variety of movie titling kits on the market. One common approach was to arrange white ceramic letters on a colored background and film them. A set of such letters provided the inspiration for Entitled JNL from Jeff Levine. The classic, sleek Art Deco lines of this font makes it an all-purpose design for any headline needs.

Tritura is my personal take on textura fonts. Several methods of drawing were used, both analog and digital, to bring its overall rough feel. Each and every character was designed not from historical references, but from my view on this very peculiar typographic style. Instead of following established rules of character construction, I preferred to just keep in mind the mechanics of the pens used in textura drawings, as well as the little I already knew from the style, to create my own characters from there.

Moscow-based designer Julia Borisovna Balasheva created her Lubok face as a pictogram-based font. The term "lubok" refers to a popular style of Russian folk art printing, which dates back to the 18th Century. In Lubok, Bakasheva has digitised several whimsical characters and animals, which were common in these prints. The hands in this font are the pointing, counting, threatening, signaling, demonstrating and playing hands I use in my own design projects. I have drawn them all with a felt-tip marker, scanned and digitized for use in a font. This picture font is more user-friendly than having single ps-files. This font set is based on the handwriting styles of quintessential American artist Edward Hopper and his wife, Josephine Nivison Hopper, and was produced in conjunction with the Whitney Museum of American Art. Both artists kept a record of Edward's paintings in a series of journals, which provide the basis for this set. Unlike font sets which feature two similar handwriting samples of one artist, the Edward Hopper font set presents two distinct handwriting styles. The Edward Hopper font is typically masculine, with its sharp angularity, while the Josephine Hopper font presents an interesting contrast, given its elegant, rounded shape, with significantly more flourish. The extras, culled from the aforementioned journals, feature 52 Hopper sketches, which run the gamut from landscapes to nude studies.

Nyfors was a sudden idea. I noticed an ad in a magazine, with some handtexted words. I don't recall what the ad was about, neither the words. When I later on tried to remember how the single characters looked like and began to draw them, the result wasn't bad at all. I am not longer sure that they resemble the characters in the ad, but it doesn't matter. Nyfors is a nice handtexted typeface, whatever its origin. There is a small stream in Tyresö where I live and work, called Nyfors. During some centuries there was a center of small scale industries along it, and they used its water to run their machinery. The typeface has its name from that stream. Nyfors was released in 1995.

Warning: works with contextual alternate-feature, which is not showing here. Covergirl is a script typeface that works all by itself. It has a very high contrast, but works also in smaller sizes. It is a display typeface. Covergirl is based on handwriting. The basic shapes are transformed to a very high contrast strict form and the hairline runs through the words in an amusing lively way that simulates the writing by hand. Its scandinavian designed handwriting, decorated, but also very minimalistic. While writing the letters will be substituted by one of the variations of the letter, that will make sure that the letters connect well. When writing in only UPPERCASE a much more simple letter shape will substitute the default.

Analogia is a digital interpretation of types used in the mid-18th century in books printed at Leuven by Martin van Overbeke. It is intended primarily for use in running text. The roman is businesslike, yet with a distinct personality; it has a generous x-height and is slightly condensed, though without appearing cramped. It is complemented by a more lively italic, which retains some irregularities in the angle of slant that are characteristic of the original. Analogia provides wide support for west, central, and east European languages that use the roman alphabet. Among its OpenType features are ligatures, small caps, several sets of numerals, contextual alternates, intelligent implementation of long ‘s’, and fractions.
