Pistol Twelve JNL is a novelty version of Jeff Levine's Twelve Oaks JNL wood type font, with the addition of random bullet holes in the upper case characters. The font design was suggested by fellow type designer Ray Larabie. Pistol Twelve JNL is a two-fold pun. Initially, this conveys the obvious fact that the design is a variation of Twelve Oaks JNL with bullet holes... but the name is also a play on an old, old joke. One person asks the other: "Would you care to join the Pistol Club? You drink 'til twelve and..." Well, you get the picture!

Cartier was Canada’s first roman text typeface, created in 1967 to celebrate Canada’s centennial. Its designer, Carl Dair, was one of the country’s most celebrated graphic design pioneers, and a fine designer indeed — but he was not a trained type designer. He had spent a year at the Enschedé type foundry and printing works in the Netherlands, but that probably wasn’t enough to fully grasp all that was required to make an effective text face. It is also possible that Dair simply compromised his own design by not allowing any of the much needed alterations to be made to his working drawings when they were handed over to Linotype for production. Cartier, though a strikingly original oldstyle, never became the influential allround text face it might have been. A display typeface derived from it, Raleigh, was more successful. Realizing that Dair’s design was sound in concept, if not in execution, Rod McDonald began working on a new digital version in 1997. The final family is convincing proof that Cartier could have been the functional text face that Dair originally wanted.

Hipster Script is another of my habitual attempts at trying to reduce the divide between manual and digital. In this case, I try to articulate brush lettering, try to get the computer to emulate continuous painting. The process wasn't that different from my work with Feel Script's shot at computerized commercial lettering, though here we have a more casual contrast, rather than the high seriousness of the Copperplate script. Swashes, alternates, ligatures — too many of them, all trying to make the interplay between the tool’s two extreme widths remain faithful to hand movement subtleties. I also toyed with ligatures containing apostrophes, something I've never seen before. With this typeface I think I've become more balanced in uniting the spontaneity of post-war ad lettering with the current trends in illustration and design. Hipster Script received a Judge’s choice Certificate of Excellence at the Type Directors of New York and was selected to be part of the Bienal Tipos Latinos 2012.

Alderney is a friendly font family in three weights, Light, Regular and Bold, designed by Stephen E Rowe for the foundry Fontelan. Our Pardner font finds its inspiration from the title screens of the 1965 film “West and Soda”, an animated Italian film that was a parody on American Westerns. Director Bruno Bozetto claimed in an interview that he was in fact the originator of the Spaghetti Western, not Sergio Leone. Last year, we visited Brazil and we were totally captivated by its cheerful and warm people. Its wild nature is absolutely amazing and very noticeable in textile printing as well as in floral design. Wasabi is one of the key ingredients in the Japanese kitchen. Also known as japanese horseradish, it is an extremely spicy condiment made out of the graded root of the Wasabi plant. Its spiciness is different than that of a chili pepper though, more like a hot mustard. The spicy taste shoots right through your nose, but does not last for long. Wasabi is traditionally used in sushi and sashimi dishes, soba noodles, and in a number of Japanese snack foods. Equally sharp and stingy, VLNL Wasabi Turbo was designed by Donald Roos. A crispbake is a kind of cracker or rusk you eat for breakfast. At least, in Holland we do. They are called 'beschuit', they are round and they come in a pack of 13 (which is a baker's dozen). It turns out that this odd number of crispbakes in a pack comes from the fact that the ovens they were baked in held 13 crispbakes in a row and it was easier to pack them like that. So, should this question pop up during a game of trivial pursuit, you now know the answer! Crispbake font is a crunchy brush font. Completely handmade using a brush and Chinese ink. Like many cities in the Midlands and North of England, Stoke-on-Trent has a rich history linked to making and industry. In Stoke’s case it was pottery. In the early 1900s bottle kilns could be seen covering the landscape of the six towns making up Stoke-on-Trent with hundreds of factories producing some of the best ceramics in the world. But by the 1990s most of these had gone. Torn down for development of housing or just left to rot. During the next few decades Stoke continued to change. The industry was in a decline and Stoke itself was seen as another poor midlands city with a dwindling industry. Then in 2008, Spode, one of the largest and most famousceramics factories in Stoke entered into administration. Pens cast aside, drawings left half finished, designs left in the turned-off kilns; Spode factory was abandoned. This was a real shock and the way everything was getting thrown into skips to be put on the tip was heartbreaking. Thankfully people salvaged some of the technical drawings, sketch design, old sample pieces and ceramics that people hard worked so hard on. Potbank has been in development over a number of years taking inspiration from the heritage and designs from the ceramics industry. It has a mixed Clarendon and Antiqua style structure with its main purpose to be used as a printed type.

We love sports – like billions of fans all over the world – but in Argentina, we really love fútbol (soccer). Fútbol is part of our culture: it makes our hearts’ race and our pulses quicken, it inspires screams of joy and screams of anguish, and it has been the cause of more than a few heated conversations amongst friends. So you can imagine our delight when, in recent years, a local team’s fútbol jersey used a Sudtipos font; it got us thinking about designing a font that explicitly had sports in mind yet still had the versatility to work for other types of projects. Sporty has a geometric and modular structure with many potential applications that far exceed jerseys, score boards and stadium wayfinding.
