A handwritten ”font for technicians“ from ca. 1900. Very geometrical, rigid forms borrowed from the typical characteristics of Jugendstil / Art Nouveau. This script is found in an old magazine which was issued sometime in the years shortly before WWI. The original copy, produced by means of a galvanized plate, is just 7 centimeters wide. It served as the model for technical professions in which, at that time, the captions of drawings were still done by hand. ingoFonts has not only digitized this beautiful typeface, we have also extended it to a whole family. In »Maier’s Alte Nr. 8« special attention was given to ensure the ”uneven“ edges, typical of handwritten script, remained effectively noticeable even in the digitized form. As a result, this ”technical“ font retains a handmade touch, while »Maier’s Neue Nr. 8« is the clean version with exact contours. The Art Nouveau forms, which are characteristic for the period of origin around the turn of the century around 1900, look especially pretty. The high degree of abstraction also seems strange in Maier's No. 8, especially when the age of the original is known. It is generally assumed that it was not until the Bauhaus in the late 1920s that such "modern" typefaces were created. Maier's No. 8 is a generation older! So many of today's supposedly "ultramodern" typefaces look quite old in comparison. In addition to the original two weights, Light and Bold, the Maiers Neue Nr. 8 got a regular and a extra-bold weight. Furthermore, the Neue is also available in italics. Although this is only a slanted version, unlike common practice, it is inclined to the left. Maier’s Nr. 8 Pro is suitable for all European languages. It includes ”Latin Extended-A,“ for Central and Eastern Europe incl. Turkish, and even Cyrillic and Greek, too. The font includes several stylistic alternates as well as a number of ligatures.

This font was inspired by lettering found on old tradecards from the 19th century.

Years ago, by happenstance, designers Nancy Mazzei and Brian Kelly found an old decrepit typewriter in an abandoned lot with tall grass in Brooklyn. They kept it around their apartment for two years. Then one day they decided that it was time to move and they planned to throw the old typewriter away. But it was so beautiful they wanted to keep at least a part of it. So they decided on keeping the keys. They kept the keys in a brown bag until one fine day the keys were introduced to a camera. It was a match made in heaven that resulted in some beautiful quirky images of typewriter keys. These images were the inspiration for Backspacer. They were scanned, traced and turned into a working typeface by Zuzana Licko.

Bouteilles is French for bottles. No fancy name this time, just bottles. You’re probably wondering why I chose this name… Well, I was taking out the glass (in Holland we recycle just about everything, glass, paper, plastic, metal, garden and kitchen waste, etc.), which included a number of French wine bottles. As I was throwing them into the underground container one block from where I live, I realised that the word Bouteilles actually sounds great and it would be a nice name for a font! Yes, it is that simple! Bouteilles is a nice brush font I made with my trusted Chinese ink and a really worn brush I found. It comes with all the diacritics you need plus two sets of alternates, which you can play with!

High Cut came about by this found object I stumbled upon, while exploring an abandoned building, which had this word "High" cut out of it in a similar stencil design. I thought it would be a fun challenge to create an entire typeface inspired by this found object. Enjoy this new stencil typeface!

Boller is based on handwriting found on the blueprints for the Jayhawk Theater in Kansas. Thomas Williams & Boller Bros. Architects are the only names found on the blueprints. The character set is extremely limited and many of the missing characters are extrapolated from existing letters and symbols. Ideal and distinctive at large sizes.

Gold Standard got its start from a few letters found on an old Gold Certificate from 1882. From those few letters spelling out the word GOLD, the rest of the alphabet was designed to match. The lowercase design was based on lettering found on an old silver certificate from approximately the same year.

Dynasty is an extensive and versatile family that exploration and modernisation of the typographic quirks associated with the 'American Gothic' type school (in much the same way as English Grotesque was an exploration of Gill/Johnston idea-space) and adds chamfered elements to dots and tails to emphasise and extend the early machine-made aesthetic. Elegantly clean and readable at headline and small text settings, where (as with all fonts in small sizes) the introduction of tracking will improve legibility.

Rokha is a wedge-serif typeface with 5 weights plus obliques. Its sharp serifs were inspired by Goudy's classic Copperplate Gothic, Rokha feels land looks like carved stone, edgy and sharp. Serifs are exaggerated, pointy, and strong, this font demands attention from the viewer at all costs. Lower and uppercase letters make it more amicable in different contexts and give it extra versatility. Bluenote is a font based on Franklin Gothic condensed. In the 60s and 70s the record label Blue Note published all those classic jazz records of my youth. Someone at their arts department cut letters to ribbons and designed wonderful record covers with those fragmented glyphs. I recently had a look at my music collection and rediscovered these letters. Gothic fraktur inspired design, I wanted to resemble old german calligraphy but making it very geometric, so I used an isometric reticle during sketching. This is a display font, created for BIG sizes, non textual. I recommend it for branding, poster, logos or titles. Its very experimental -- it exists within the limits of legible and illegible reading. I choose the name “Garbancera” because gothic calligraphy has issues that are linked with dark, gloomy, lugubrious things or fear feelings, culturally in Mexico. I related this with death and for mexicans, death is something we celebrate and give us joy and happiness, annoying, the most representative Mexican characters, one of those is “La Calavera Garbancera” or better known as “La Catrina”, a clothes skeleton with only a hat. It was drawn this way to make a critic to all Mexicans at that time, that were poor but they wanted to represent a high lifestyle, “those that where to the bones, but with a French hat with ostrich feathers”. La Catrina was created by José Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican lithographer but also a newspaper illustrator. I think this is a beautiful font that can lead to great results, just use it wisely.

A 1930s-era sign lettering template set manufactured for the National Carbon Company by Wrico (The Wright-Regan Instrument Company) yielded the familiar lettering that comprises Zoning Department JNL. This rounded-end typestyle was also widely used on architectural drawings, signage, blueprints and the like.

Vintage (circa 1960s) packaging for Parker Cartridge Pen Erasers had the product description printed in bold stencil lettering featuring a squared look with rounded corners. This design has been recreated digitally as Marketing Stencil JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.
