I have long since been using my own BulletNumbers in positive and negative and four styles, serif, sans, engravers and script, a fitting one for every occasion. Now I perfected them for all of you. Here is how to use them: (Important! Set letterspacing to '0', otherwise the two digit numbers will overlap!!!) The numbers 1-0 reside on the standard keys. Two digit numbers 01-99 can be composed out of left and right half circles by using (lowercase) 'abcdefghij' for the first digit (left half circle) and 'lmnopqrstu' for the second digit (right half circle). The critical pairs (all combinations with 1) can be found in various places. When reading text, the most informative parts of the written word for a human brain to identify, are the top and bottom edges of each word, and to a lesser degree, the leading and trailing edges. The overall shape has more useful info than the inner workings of each word. DT Enigmystic, is a display font family that gives you just that. The outer edge. At first glance, these letters don't look like standard letters, and yet, they are perfectly readable. And it is a 'somewhat' smart text, in that it will automatically complete the trailing edge of every word, whenever it sees a comma, period or space. Similarly, it will automatically complete the leading edge of every word following a space. When used as display test or as a heading, the first letter will need to be preceeded by a space, to achieve a full enclosed word outline. As with most of my fonts, do use Contextual Ligatures. This allows the letters to come alive. When generated here on this webpage, contextual ligatures are not turned on, and so the words do not appear completely closed at their beginnings and ends. But as can be seen in the poster images, these outlined words do automatically complete themselves when contextual ligatures are active.

Originally designed in 1928, Plak is something of a lost gem in the type world. Despite being drawn by Futura creator Paul Renner, it never achieved the same popularity and spent decades lacking a much-needed digital revival. Monotype designers Linda Hintz and Toshi Omagari have taken its existing three weights and, after extensive research into the original wood type, extended them into the vast Neue Plak family. The typeface is available in 60 weights that stay true to Renner’s intentions, and offer the same blend of “quirky” details and “German stiffness” – as Hintz describes it. The design is an unusual mixture, bringing together a defiant outer appearance that’s counteracted by more playful details found in the lowercase r, and the large dots of the lowercase i. Other distinctive details include open or strikethrough counters, and a set of hairline widths that reduce Renner’s original design to its bare bones. The rendezvous of the two terms seems quite unique and utopistic today, but it is comforting to see that it was natural at some time deep down in Russian history. Bits of both meanings were going through my mind while I was designing this typeface. Mir’s character set is multiscript – Latin, Cyrillic and Greek – and extends to many parts of the linguistic world. In fact it covers more than 100 languages. Stylistic consistency between the language systems make typographic border crossings painless even where national borders are still closely guarded. And in regions where mathematics, physics or chemistry are to be expressed, a rich set of OpenType features lets Mir master also these situations. Serious things are best be said in a relaxed, unpretentious way. So Mir doesn’t put on a show. Mir has authority without being authoritarian, it is serious but not stern. Chef Lorenz about the TpKurier recipe: “TpKurier is the second redesign we did of Courier. The first redesign in 2000, although based on a five-unit grid, was drawn completely by hand. Six years later we designed another grid version of Courier, and the TpKurier family was born. This version is completely constructed up till its last detail. We didn't want to correct ‘mistakes’ deriving from the use of the grid, but instead make them visible (see “S”). TpKurier is based on a very simple grid, composed a proportion of four units high by two units wide. A series of other links between them make it possible to form a font from this grid. We felt it was important to consistently work within these limitations so that any unexpected asperities would help provide the font with its character. Even though it is a rough constructed typeface it was important to us to design real italic lower case letters and not just a sloped roman (see “a”, “g” or “s”). The first family published contained a serif and sans-serif version of the TpKurier, with italic and bold.”

Agatized Informal is a rough-edged stencil typeface with chunky letterforms and tight spacing. Designed primarily for display use, it’s ideal for posters, logos, advertising, book cover designs or small chunks of text such as pull-out quotes. The design is something of an enigma, a curious mish-mash of genres – imagine splicing Uncle Buck and Deadpool into a horror movie – it’s big, bold and funny although has a dark side. But what really makes this typeface a joy to drive is its boot full of alternative characters and ligatures. There is a saying: Use sparingly. Not on this street! The Englishman William Caslon punchcut many roman, italic, and non-Latin typefaces from 1720 until his death in 1766. At that time most types were being imported to England from Dutch sources, so Caslon was influenced by the characteristics of Dutch types. He did, however, achieve a level of craft that enabled his recognition as the first great English punchcutter. Caslon's roman became so popular that it was known as the script of kings, although on the other side of the political spectrum (and the ocean), the Americans used it for their Declaration of Independence in 1776. The original Caslon specimen sheets and punches have long provided a fertile source for the range of types bearing his name. Identifying characteristics of most Caslons include a cap A with a scooped-out apex; a cap C with two full serifs; and in the italic, a swashed lowercase v and w. Caslon's types have achieved legendary status among printers and typographers, and are considered safe, solid, and dependable. A few of the many interpretations from the early twentieth century were true to the source, as well as strong enough to last into the digital era. Caslon Black was designed by Dave Farey in the ITC library.

Press Gothic is a revival of Aldo Novarese's Metropol typeface, released by Nebiolo in 1967 as a competitor to Stephenson Blake's Impact (designed by Goeffrey Lee). Though Metropol enjoyed a few short months of popularity and use in Italy, Germany and France, Impact won the technological outlasting battle by moving on to film type then to computer outlines bundled with mainstream software, while Metropol never made it past the metal state until now. Too bad really, since this is one of the few faces that could have played well with all the horrendous stretch'n'squeezing of the 1970s. Just like its inspiration, Press Gothic aims to be a fresh alternative to big economical poster fonts with clear sans serif forms and an urgent, strong, yet elegant design appeal. In the summer of 2008, Press Gothic underwent a major linguistic and aesthetic reworking for an international publishing company. The result of this on the retail side are new small capitals and biform/unicase additions to the main font, as well as expanded language support that includes Cyrillic, Greek, Turkish, Baltic, Central and Eastern European, Maltese, and Esperanto. Press Gothic Pro, the OpenType version, combines all three fonts into one, taking advantage of the small caps feature, and the stylistic alternate feature for the biform shapes.

Jantar Sharp is a text family with flared terminals that eludes the catego­ries of serif or sans. Its most recognisable features are taken from both styles to achieve proper design and high legibility standards. Jantar Sharp performs especially well when used for continuous reading including texts on web platforms. Its personality lies in the flared stroke endings and certain details which make its shapes neither sans nor serifs. Rather than following any particular historical model, it picks up elements from various periods to achieve an organically dynamic look which is entirely compatible with the reading process. Jantar Sharp Italic makes a nice contrast, though the pace and proportions are not drastically different from the upright. This allows for effortless reading of longer passages of italicised text. This delicious font family takes its name from the tastiest of Piemonte’s specialities. It has been designed in collaboration with Turin-based calligrapher and artisan Andrea Tardivo. Piemonte soil provides the most delectable hazelnuts, which are the key to creating a mouth-watering chocolate spread called Gianduja. This popular delicacy has a rich graphic history, with lavishly designed packaging. We sought to infuse the sweetness and tradition of Turin’s confectionary into a new font family, reinterpreting Italian models from the first quarter of the last century. All fonts were crafted by hand on paper first and then digitised in a way that retains the handmade quality and aesthetic. This family blends the Turinese touch from the old chocolatiers and the beautifully printed foils they use to wrap each exquisite creation. The extensive display family contains; Gianduja Sans a geometric font based on examples found in Italian art deco era artworks. Gianduja Script has been handwritten with a speedball pen following the standards of “Bella Scrittura” and Gianduja Capitals is a decorative font inspired by the “liberty” lettering signs from Piemonte.
