Early in my career as a graphic designer I purchased a book on Japanese packaging. With it, I came to notice that Japanese characters used mostly a modicum of strokes. This font was my attempt at trying to balance the familiarity of a Latin alphabet with the unfamiliarity of Kanji and Kana. It was more of a typographical challenge than usual; since going too much in either direction would defeat the purpose. I would like to think that, for the most part, I got the balance right. We wanted to make an ultra-thin, tall font with a rough, hand-drawn look and ended up with more than we bargained for. To get the font we wanted we started by developing a source font for the basic letter shapes and we ended up with a whole bunch of variations of the basic style. Thus was born the new Ducatus family of fonts, starting with Ducatus Light which developed into the Medium and Heavy versions, and the Medium weight was ultimately used as the basis for the Ducatus Rough font, which was the goal of the project in the first place. Ducatus Rough was created by modifying Ducatus Medium in Photoshop using Gallery Effects and several other filter packages, and then redoing the outlines from scratch in Fontographer. A lot of work, but the result is just what we wanted.

Cirkel is a contemporary font family based on circles. Its geometrical and unusual forms gives us a nice feel of modernity and humor. Created by Jarbas Gomes, Cirkel family is composed by 3 weights (Light, Medium & Bold) and its respective ornamented fonts made of patterns (Stripes Light, Stripes Medium & Stripes Bold). The fonts also have a great set of ligatures and swashes that can be accessed in softwares with support to OpenType features. Cirkel is indicated for hype designs, on titles and short texts.

Riveta is a sharp type family available in 18 styles, designed in 2021 by Joël Carrouché. Medium and medium italic styles are 100% free to use. The typeface features a simple and solid geometric construction, with straight terminals and a very discrete triangular serif that gives the font some extra spice in big size. Sistina, designed by Hermann Zapf in 1950 was first named Aurelia Titling. It is a heavy supplement to the Michelangelo Titling based on studies of inscriptions in Rome. First release in hotmetal at D. Stempel AG, Frankfurt in 1951. Sistina was originally an all caps font. The digital version from Linotype contains small caps. Hermann Zapf together with Akira Kobayashi, type director from Linotype had made a new revised version of Sistina now named as Palatino Imperial" in the Palatino nova type family, a Platinum Collection product from Linotype."

The inspiration for this typeface family came from my childhood experiences at West Monkton, amidst an historic part of the South West of England. Studies of the original incised capitals of the Trajan column in Rome were analysed and polished for this modern version. The lower case letterforms and numerals were then created in sympathy, taking their proportions from the incised letters of local gravestones. Its name honours not only the area where the original alphabet was conceived and drawn, but also the people responsible for fostering my initial interest in letters.

Designed by Hans Samuelson in 2023. With two weights and many variations Klip Klop offers a large set of characters for playful lettering. The flavouring is strong avant garde and the build is strict geometrical with even stroke thickness throughout. One unusual feature is that the bottom and top horizontal strokes are centered on the baseline and capital height. This renders the same optical size between the thin and the medium but different actual heights and baselines. Use it for Headlines or signage in any medium! Klip Klop!
