As the basis for this new font artist and designer Lena Schmidt used an old font design by her mother Jutta. At a young age, her mother drew and illustrated a lot with pen and ink. She made beautiful illustrations and many font designs. Schmidt chose one of these drafts - delicately drawn Donovan lyrics - as the basis for this digital handwritten stencil font. I found this type specimen on the statue of Jan Hus in Prague’s Old Town Square. The statue was designed in 1903 by Ladislav Saloun, and its writing is the cutest Nouveau font I've ever seen. Filling in the blanks, I realized the need for a standard lower case because the caps are so wild. The result is a very type-able and dynamic Nouveau. I grew up with the ‘Save The Whales’ slogan: I remember watching the news and seeing little Greenpeace dinghies taking on huge Japanese whalers, and activists clinging on for dear life. I haven’t heard that slogan for a while: maybe because whaling is soooo 1890’s, but also maybe because the world has other problems to address. Out of respect for the ‘Save The Whale’ activists, I named this fattish font Whale Song. Whale Song is a robust comic font. It was especially created for book covers, product packaging and posters and, of course, it comes with a whale of diacritics.

Taranto was inspired by the typeface Domino by J. C. & M. Demarchi (published by Mecanorma in 1973). At its core, it follows the design language of Domino, but goes much further than its source of inspiration. (see fontsinuse.com for more info on Domino). The Taranto font family consists of 4 individual fonts (Thin, Regular, Black and Fill). Each font contains a glyph set of about 240 glyphs (Western European character set) and also contains alternates for some characters.
