“Greuceanu” is the the name of a brave romanian fairy tale character and his mission was to eliberate de Sun and the Moon that were stolen by some Dragon like creatures that in romanian folklore they are called “ Zmei”. It inspired me to create this decorative uppercase display typeface with strong influences from old cyrillic writing and also a touch of fun and geometrical construction explorations. Besides Extended Latin Support it includes also Cyrillic and Greek alphabets as you already can expect from most of DePlictis Types releases. This decorative typeface goes well for use in book covers and headlines and only your creativity is the limit of its usability.

Octopuss is an energetic titling typeface designed in 1970 by Colin Brignall for Letraset dry transfer sheets. Brignall expanded the basic alphabet with an outline variation with a shadow, which makes the typeface look three dimensional, almost like it is floating. Octopuss font displays the unmistakable signs of the typefaces of the 1970s, as do Countdown and Harlow, also designed by Brignall. The circular strokes of the capitals that drop well under the base line are striking and unique. This humanist sans-serif typeface was exhaustively designed, full-featured typeface family that reveals its character and distinctiveness in complex text. In the original Lisboa Pro the forms of the letters are humanist, with hooked headterminals, the characters contains medium contrast with a left-angled stress on the strokes. I digitized and revitalize Hostetler Fette Ultfraktur Ornamental from the classical type specimen book from Rudolf Hostetler. He was a Swiss type designer, author of “The Printer’s Terms” designed by Jan Tschichold, of “Technical Terms of the Printing Industry” (5th edition was printed in 1995), and of "Type: eine Auswahl guter Drucktypen; 80 Alphabete klassischer und moderner Schriften" (Teufen, Ausser-Rhoden: Niggli, 1958). He also wrote "Type: A Selection of Types" (1949, fgm books, R. Hostettler, E. Kopley, H. Strehler Publ., St. Gallen and London) in which he highlights type made by European houses such as Haas, Enschedé, Deberny and Nebiolo. Jost Hochuli wrote his biography.

Binner was designed by John F. Cumming in 1898 and is an alphabet with a strongly historic character. It takes the reader back to the early part of the 20th century, when typefaces of this kind could be found in advertisements on houses and posters. The robust figures display a marked stroke contrast. Particularly striking are the high middle strokes of the E and F as well as the wavy connecting stroke of the H. The curves of the R and P extend well into the lower third of the characters. With its robust figures, Binner is best used for headlines in middle and larger point sizes.

Some time ago, when we were working on our Merrivale family, it occurred to us that an adaptation of the design, incorporating selected Blackletter elements, would be in the best traditions of 19th and 20th century blackletter revivals, which combine all the spirit of the middle ages with modern legibility-think of Goudy Medieval as an example. In the case of Merrivaux (best quality faux-medieval name there!) we've produced a typeface which has the ready legibility of Roman titling, but which gives a subtle blackletter feel. The regular form of Merrivaux is incised with a visible midline, a solid form with identical metrics is also offered. Both forms include a range of opentype features including ligatures, fractions, old style numerals and terminal forms. Merrivaux is ideal for posters, signage and design work, where a touch of that 'Olde-Worlde' feel is needed.

Dearest is a distinct flowing script based on handwritten characters found in a 19th Century German book chronicling a history of the Middle Ages. Conversation Hearts are inspired by the sweethearts and conversation hearts that can be found all over the US and Britain, but not in Germany. A source of endless fun and surprise. As a typographer to me they are also a surprising document of written communication. Most people complain that nowadays the inscriptions are not as sweet as they used to be. While they used to held romantic and promising inscriptions like “Be True” “Sweet Talk”, today they carry “Tweet me” “Ur Hot” and “Party Girl”. So i took this as a motivation to work with conversation sweetheart on a conceptial inspirational and typographical level. The obvious: every letter pressed on the keyboard brings out a conversation heart that starts with the letter - i.e. L = Loverboy, H = Heartless but what to write? Since i didn't want to reproduce the old “Fax me” and “Email me” I had to come up with something new. Something with a personal relation and of course something that I Love - what else could i write in the shape of the heart? So I tried to access my upper subconsciousness and looked for two words for every letter in the alphabet. One for the capital letter pressed and one word for the lowercase letter. Resulting in a Kurt Schwitters worthy assemblage of vocables "Post-office" “Internship” “Zebra” “Answers” etc. It is not easy to read a text set in Conversation Hearts but easier as a text set in Zapf-Dingbats. To sparkle the visual appearance uppercase letters are filled hearts with “carved” inscription, while lowercase letters are an outlined heart with written inscription. Conversations Hearts is a part of the Light Hearted Font Collection that is inspired by a recording of Jean Baudrillard with the title, "Die Macht der Verführung" (The Power of Seduction) from 2006. Further inspiration came from the article, "The shape of the heart: I'm all yours". The heart represents sacred and secular love: a bloodless sacrifice. by British writer Louisa Young printed in EYE magazine (#43) London, 2002.

Like many of Jim Parkinson's alphabets, Pueblo began as poster lettering. It shows a range of influences: turn-of-the-century sign painting, old Speedball lettering books, and a touch of art nouveau. While developing Pueblo, Parkinson debated whether to make the ends of the serifs rounded or square. Rounded looked more like the work of a Speedball lettering pen, but squared stroke endings made the letters more legible at small sizes. The finished design sports serifs that are just slightly rounded. According to Parkinson, the design feature is “enough to be noticed at large sizes, while going virtually unnoticed at smaller point sizes,” adding to the versatility of this distinctive typeface.

When master letterer Hugh Gordon and his student, Ross F. George developed a set of lettering pens between June 16, 1913 and Sept. 1, 1914, they had no idea that their invention (which they named Speed-Ball®) would still be in use nearly a hundred years later. The C. Howard Hunt pen company [originally of Camden, New Jersey] became the original (and sole) distributor of these pens. By 1915 an instructional booklet entitled "Modern Pen Lettering" was produced, and it was copiously illustrated with examples of layouts, lettering techniques and an assortment of alphabets for the user to learn. Nouveau Poster JNL is Jeff Levine's interpretation of a sanserif design found within the pages of this vintage publication.

This family was inspired by the well-known Caslon typeface created by William Caslon, the English font designer, who was, with John Baskerville, the progenitor of English Transitional typeface classification in the mid-18th century (See also our 1776 Independence). We were inspired by a Caslon style set used by an unknown Flemish printer from Bruges, in the beginning of 1800s, a little before the revival of Caslon style in the 1840s. Our font covers all Western, Eastern and Central European languages (including Celtic diacritics) and the Turkish alphabet, with a complete small-caps set in each of the two styles. (Please note: The complete character set is available only in TTF and OTF “Pro” version.)

Zebrawood font is a joint work of the typeface designers K.B. Chansler, C. Crossgrove and C. Twombly, who also designed Rosewood, Ponderose and Pepperwood together. Like its relatives, Zebrawood also displays a kind of Wild West character. Its style can be traced back to the Toscanienne typefaces which appeared in advertisements and on signs at the end of the 19th century. Typical of this capital alphabet are the split serifs and robust base forms, which emphasize the typeface's decorative character. Zebrawood is, like Rosewood and Schwennel, meant as a bicolor font, meaning that the weight Zebrawood fill complements the inner spaces of Zebrawood regular. TwentyFourNinetyOne [2491] is a reinterpretation of the alphabet of 1919 by Theo van Doesburg; the original a true rendering of the thinking of the Dutch-based art movement “de Stijl.” Jump forward to 1980 and prop lettering used on the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century television series; a vernacular typeface that was a utilitarian mix of geometry and pixel-based forms, used to symbolize the futuristic universe of 2491. At times it would appear on spaceships, laser guns, signage at space ports or in one episode, a Spandex tapestry.
