My goal for Harfang was to create a serif typeface that would be easy to read at text sizes, while having a strong personality at larger sizes. The initial design had a purely rounded style, but with each development pass I introduced some angularity. The final result is a typeface that is easy to read in long texts, advertising copy, annual reports and the like; but one that also provides a crisp and stylish appeal in more prominent display settings. I choose the name Harfang (Harfang des neiges — Snowy Owl or Great White Owl) because after my first typeface, Migration, I wanted something with a thematic relation. On a more personal level, Harfang is the official bird of Québec, a province with a long winter and a wonderful, white landscape, and the place I call home. —André Simard

Erdogan Karayel, a master in graphic arts and a cartoon artist, has long dreamed of transforming characters made up of his own handwriting into fonts. This dream has come true with the technical support of Karayel's school friend Sabahattin Kayış, a graduate of the Istanbul School of Applied Fine Arts (Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts). The biggest problem of handwritten fonts in the font world is the difficulty of reading in long texts due to their curved and flexible letters that create spacing problems when used side by side. The "Karayel Calligraphy", on the contrary, is created as a solution to this problem. It's a font that is sufficiently fluid, visually satisfying and easy to read. In particular, a lot of effort is made to ensure the utmost harmony between the character's spaces. The “Karayel Calligraphy” font is now available for download.

Paradise Lost is a 1667 poem by John Milton which mostly concerns the Biblical story of the Fall of Man, Eve's temptation by the devil and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden. It's quite a hefty read, as the poem consists of ten books with over 10.000 lines of verse. Needless to say, I didn't read it all. But, it did give me inspiration for a font, which I called Paradise Lost. It's a good name, even though there is nothing Biblical about this font. Paradise Lost was created (pun intended) using a broken bamboo satay skewer and Chinese ink. It is all caps, but upper and lower case differ and like to mingle. I also included several ligatures for double lower case letters (aa, ee, jj, kk, etc.). Paradise Lost comes with an eternity of diacritics.

With the publication of the “Today Sans Now” Elsner+Flake extends its offering of the “Today Sans Serif” type family, developed in 1988 by Volker Küster for Scangraphic, by another cut so that the gradation of the stroke width can now be more finely calibrated. The type complement is available for 72 Latin-based languages as well as Cyrillic. Where available, small caps were integrated, and mathematical symbols as well as fractions were included. In order to make the symbols for text applications in regard to headlines more flexible, the insertions which were formerly added, for technical reasons in order to sharpen the corners, were eliminated, and the optical size adjustments of the vertical and diagonal stem endings (I, v, H, V) to the horizontal bars (z, Z) were scaled back. Using a normal angle of writing, his experiments lead to the form structure of the characters: a small contrast between bold and light weights, serif-like beginning and end strokes in some of the lower-case characters, and the typical, left-leaning slant of all round lower-case letters and the typical left-leaning axis of all round letter forms. In this way, a rhythmization of a line of type was achieved which created a lively image without being “noisy”. With this concept, Volker Küster has enlarged the Sans Serif by a distinctive, trend-setting form variation.

In the typeface family "Complements" two sets of characters complement each other, so much so that they work together much better than they work separately. The two sets are designed to alternate and this alternating is done automatically in applications that support the OpenType feature Contextual Alternatives. Complements is purely for show and display; it is a horrible choice for text. The spacing is very tight, which works well for very large point sizes. At smaller point sizes the user may want to increase character spacing. The typeface is monospaced. If the spacing between words is too large, substitute the non-breaking space (or the underscore) for the space character. Hassan is a traditional-style Arabic text face designed by Hassan Sobhi Mourad, an experienced calligrapher and teacher of the art and first produced by the Linotype Design Studio (U.K.) as a PostScript font in 1993. A modern sans serif with open round forms. The ”round“ letters emphasize the condensed open oval; the light counter forms provide the rhythm of the typeface, causing the typeface to appear gentle and pleasing. The ”modern“ design of a and g being especially contributive here. All of the letters are recognizably narrow, almost ”condensed,“ the forms being very functionally shaped. The construction of the ”triangular“ upper case letters A M N V W as well as v and w, especially catches the eye with the shafts joined together as beams are stacked upon each other. With this construction Hedwig displays a down-to-earth touch. Gate A1 is a typeface inspired by the famous DIN, but it is more humane compared to the prototype. A 1930s WPA (Works Projects Administration) poster advertising a play entitled “Abraham Lincoln, The Great Commoner” had the play’s name done in a hand-lettered Art Deco sans.
