Packing more copy in a narrow space is the main reason for using a condensed type. Characters with a more ovular shape tend to be less wide than their circular counterparts and will allow for more letters per line. In narrow columns for example, this typeface can provide up to 25% more copy than the regular typeface in the same space. Another reason is when a larger type size is called for — used sparingly it is useful for headings or headlines. For emphasis, narrower letters can provide a stark contrast in the flow of reading, creating impact while retaining typographic character. Condensed types can specially useful in tables and charts because typically both use few words in each block. If space now allows, you may think about the luxury of a larger point size. This optimizes space while keeping your typography more easily legible.

Woven is a geometrical typeface based on a simple tessellation or tiling pattern. The template for the letters has both vertical and horizontal symmetry and the tiling pattern has four-fold rotational symmetry. Variations of this pattern are popular with quilters and most have a woven look to them. To fit the letters into the template results in some distorted letters but it is the pattern that matters, not the individual elements of that pattern. With proper spacing, a block of text will fit together both horizontally and vertically. Woven is intended to be used with alternating letter sets and the OpenType feature of contextual alternatives does this automatically in applications that support it. The upper-case could be used alone but it unlikely that the lower-case characters could be used by themselves. The typeface is hard to read and would make a challenging font for word-search puzzles.

Tramuntana 1 Pro was inspired by the late Renaissance and Mannerist spirit and it was designed by Ricardo Santos during 2009 for his Master in Advanced Typography (Eina-Barcelona). This project was also inspired by Robert Granjon, Garamond and Sabon typefaces. The name tramuntana (Tramontane) is the Catalonian word for the cold wind that comes from the Pyrenees mountains and goes as far as the Balearic Islands. It was designed for editorial purposes (books and magazines). This typeface family contains different font versions for different optical sizes, caption, text, subhead and display, all of them with different x-height proportions and contrast. The serifs are asymmetrical and the letterforms have geometric modulated strokes which simulates the calligraphic variations. Its design approach gives a dynamic feeling, contributing to text flow and continuous reading. When I released Halogen, I asked ‘Who doesn't want or need an expansive contemporary extended sans that has a sense of style and swagger… what if it had a lowercase, small caps and various numeral options… how could you say no?’ Go, click on the Halogen link and read on, if you're interested. Was inspired by the old west days that we can often see in printing, circus posters and wanted notices in western movies, even tho the style was really used in many parts of the world during that period. This style is sometimes called as "circus letter" too. Was designed to have a modern look, using straighter lines and an extended style, can be used on various situations like posters, logos for restaurants, alternative business like an old washing station (as you can see on the next images), music bands etc. I believe that is a promising typography that can be used by various designers in a lot of diverse project. It counts with 226 multi language characters, one weight on version 1.0, on a next version I hope to take this project to another level, creating a variable typeface from condensed to really extended weights. It would complete this typography and eliminate the limits of use.

Just before the end of 2020 all schools in Holland closed for the second time, because of an increase in the number of COVID 19 cases. This means that my wife and I have to educate our three kids at home. The kids are great and take their tasks seriously, but it is difficult, as all three of them require different educational levels. I am sure you parents understand. Trying to get some work done is virtually impossible, so my wife and I made a schedule and we live by ‘on duty’ and ‘off duty’ days. I was thinking of this when I created this font (obviously on an ‘off duty’ day). Home Education is a handwritten scribble font. It was made with a Sharpie pen (possibly used by one of my kids, because I noticed tiny ink stains on my wooden dining table…). It comes with all the diacritics you can hope for and lovely double letter ligatures for you to play with.

Texicali is a multiple weight type design based on our FontMesa logo. The idea was simple: create a sans serif with a few slab serifs added resulting in a style that could feel at home just about anywhere. The regular/standard set works well for general use while the Alt set is perfect for when you want to add a little country charm. The Alt set has a few additional alternate letters built in which are easily accessed using Adobe Creative Suite products such as Illustrator and In Design. The X version, with its higher x-height lowercase, is ideal for signage where you want the look of a lowercase, however your sign still needs to be readable from the street. Larger x-heights also come in handy for web use helping to make the text more readable on smaller devices. The price of font styles are subject to change without notice.

Multi is an extensive sans serif typeface family that consists of two subfamilies: Multi Text that comprises three weights (roman & italic) and Multi Display (seven weights, roman & italic). Vitality bursts forth from Multi. It has a distinctive ‘phrasing’ (in the musical sense), neither humanist nor glyphic, somewhere in between, exploring uncharted territory. Its design is pragmatic, yet not rigid, slightly tinged with tiny incised touches. This is clearly noticeable in Multi Display: the roman lowercase’s asymmetric stems are very softly tapered, with bevelled, sharp upstrokes. Furthermore, all weights consistently share these idiosyncrasies from Thin to Poster. With its lower contrast, wider proportions, shorter ascenders and descenders, Multi Text was purposely adjusted to meet all the requirements of a legible typeface for newspapers in paper and screen, as they were manually hinted. It also has a few new features, such as the outstrokes of the roman ‘l’ and the italic ‘a’, which bring a subtle calligraphic feel to the text flow.

Started during 2012, LCT Palissade is a letter type belonging to the Didone classification. It takes over the Italian characters from the XVII century. Century affected by a huge artistic and industrial mutation, we assist to the eruption of the railroad network and Turner’s paintings. In typography, the Didones(XVIIe) begins to concede the place to the Egyptians XIXe. We noticed an evolution to rectangular drawings, that were heavier and darker. LCT Palissade is in fact the study of a history flow, crossing through the industrial revolution and romanticism; the result of a strong letter type, solid, strict the drawing is orientated towards very dark, reminiscent of the characters beginning XIXe. The serifs are the summary between the British characters from the end of (XVIe) and the Italian ones beginning of (XVIIe). In order to spread out the romanticism, they are very fine to allow a largest contrast and keep the elegance of the global shape.

Peppo is an informal, simple, readable and easy-on-the-eyes handwritten typeface inspired by hand-written script. Each font providing an organic and spontaneous hand lettering feel. Capitolina is a family of 10 typefaces with a contemporary design style, based on different historical models. The original shape of serifs was a reference to 19th century’s Clarendon types though this inspiration remains as a subtle feature of the final design. Even subtler are the calligraphic influences, better noticed in the italics. The result is a set of typefaces that look more ‘constructed’ than ‘written’, referring to a rationalist style. However, it has a distinct approach to the aesthetic treatment of typographic forms that resembles the humanist tradition. Available in five weights of roman and italic types, Capitolina has a wide glyph palette that contains 800 glyphs in each font. Finally the time has come to publish our new ‘BlackHand’ font. It is a bold and upright handwritten font featuring 150 ligatures, which make for a credible handwritten look and feel. The ligatures will appear quasi random without the user having to search for the right alternate character in a list of glyphs. As you will notice, the font does well in both headers (it even has an ‘instant logo’ quality) and in plain text. The font finds it’s origin in handwritten notes which were done without paying attention to aesthetics. The regular characters and the ligatures were handpicked to form an organic and natural, very readable result. The original writing was done with an Edding 1340 brushpen, giving the font frivolous thick/ thin strokes. We hope you enjoy using the font as much as we did creating it.
