Larks' Tongues in Aspic is the fifth studio album (released in 1973) by the English progressive rock group King Crimson. I have always liked this name, as it reminded me of old stories in which witches threw all kinds of weird ingredients (larks’ tongues, bat wings and petrified dragon dung) into a big cauldron. When I created this font, it looked like the writing in an old book of spells, so I just had to call it Larks’ Tongues. Larks’ Tongues is a very lively headline font which would look good on (children’s) book covers, posters and product packaging. So, if you are about to write a book about witches, want to throw a halloween party or want to market your Larks’ Tongues in Aspic, then by all means, use this font! Comes with a magical amount of diacritics.

Opinion varies regarding the role of Claude Garamond (ca. 1480–1561) in the development of the Old Face font Garamond. What is accepted is the influence this font had on other typeface developments from the time of its creation to the present. Garamond, or Garamont, is related to the alphabet of Claude Garamond (1480–1561) as well as to the work of Jean Jannon (1580–1635 or 1658), much of which was attributed to Garamond. In comparison to the earlier Italian font forms, Garamond has finer serifs and a generally more elegant image. The Garamond of Jean Jannon was introduced at the Paris World’s Fair in 1900 as Original Garamond, whereafter many font foundries began to cast similar types. Garamond Classico is based on the forms of Jean Jannon, which already displayed characteristics of the Transitional style.

For decades, cereal companies have included premiums [promotional gifts] inside their packages, printed on the cartons or to send for with a special coupon and redemption instructions. During the 1940s, Pep cereal [a long-discontinued Kellogg's brand] offered a series of water-applied decals within its boxes. Most likely made by the Meyercord Company (one of America's largest transfer decal manufacturers at the time), one decal in particular had an alphabet in gold letters with black outlines. (One can only presume the marketing strategy was to have kids bug their parents to buy more Pep cereal if the child needed more than one letter of the alphabet for his or her initials!) Those decal letters have inspired a digital version as the outline character font Toy Decals JNL, which is available in regular oblique, solid and solid oblique styles.

Architype Crouwel is a collection of typefaces created in collaboration with Wim Crouwel, following his agreement with The Foundry, to recreate his experimental alphabets as digital fonts. Crouwel's most recognized work was for the Van Abbe and Stedelijk museums (1954 –72) where he established his reputation for radical, grid-based design. Stedelijk first appeared in the seminal Vormgevers poster, commissioned by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam in 1968. Crouwel created a rigid grid system across the poster of 57 vertical by 41 horizontal lines, also forming the basis for the construction of the letterforms. Although all hand drawn, the resulting typeface had a machine-made appearance. This striking black and white poster with its visible grid became one of Crouwel's most iconic designs. Architype Stedelijk now re-creates these letterforms as a single alphabet typeface in a digital font.

Cherubina means ‘Blessed’. It is a name derived from the Akkadian “karabu / kuribu”, meaning “blessing, blessed”. A cherub is a type of spiritual being mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, often depicted as a baby with wings. This font was based on the hand lettering I found on a 1962 Japanese poster for the movie “Mother Joanna Of The Angels”. The poster was designed by Hiroyoshi Oshima. Cherubina font is an all caps font (upper and lower case differ and can be used together) with a medieval feel to it. I tried to keep the ‘spirit’ of Hiroyoshi Oshima’s lettering, but changed the glyphs and designed most of them myself, as I had nothing but the title of the poster to work with. I have added some ligatures as well. Comes with my blessing and an eternity of diacritics.

Empresario Stephen F. Austin (1793-1836) is considered by many the “Father of Texas” for leading the first Anglo-American colony into the then-Mexican territory back in the 1820s. A few years later, while on a diplomatic mission to Mexico City, Austin was arrested on suspicion of plotting Texas independence and imprisoned for virtually all of 1834. During this time he kept a secret diary of his thoughts and musings—much of it written in Spanish. Austin Pen is my interpretation of Austin’s scribblings in this miniature prison journal (now in the collection of the wonderful Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, in the Texas city that bears his name). The little leather-bound book is filled with notes in ink and pencil—some of the faded penciled pages traced in ink years later by Austin’s nephew Moses Bryan. A genuine replication of 19th century cursive, Austin Pen has two styles: a fine regular weight, along with a bold style that replicates passages written with an over-inked pen. Each is legible and evocative of commonplace American penmanship of two centuries ago.

A tessellation is a shape that can be used to completely fill the plane—simple examples are isosceles triangles, squares, and hexagons. Tessellation patterns are eye-catching and visually appealing, which is the reason that they have long been popular in a variety of decorative situations, such as quilting. Most of the shapes in TessieSpinners suggest a spinning motion. Most do not resemble real world objects. The TessieSpinners fonts contain shapes that can be used to construct tessellation patterns. Arzachel is a humanistic sanserif with a big x-height and a specific organic look. Its design is scientifically sharp and efficient in small type sizes as well as rugged and dramatic in headlines. Arzachel’s essential feeling comes from several features: all the letters are slightly sloped, stem terminations are flared at the top, and the terminals in letters a, c, e, f… are widening with the inside parts completely flat. The stroke contrast is low in the regular weight while it increases in the black; finally the capitals have an inscriptional flavor. Despite being a sanserif (thus a product of recent typography) Arzachel’s roots stretch back to the Renaissance tradition: Olocco took inspiration from some of the early and rather weird types cut in Venice in the 15th century. Arzachel was conceived during Olocco’s MA in Reading to provide a companion for his Zenon for use in small type sizes. But instead of expanding the Zenon family with optical sizes, the designer decided on a sans with its own personality rather than a sanserif version of Zenon with chopped-off serifs.

Yalta Sans combines the warmth of a traditional humanist design, the clarity of a grotesque and the modernity of a square sans. Several design traits contribute to this melding of diverse typographic concepts. Characters find their foundation in stroke-based shapes rather than constructed forms. Curve stokes are also slightly squared and counters are open. Curved strokes join verticals at nearly right angles to create a strong horizontal stress, aiding the reading process. Abdo Rajab is the second version of the font FS Rajab which was designed by the type designer Abdulsamiea Rajab Salem for Future Soft company fonts. It is a leading company in Arabization field and producing the Arabic and Islamic programs beside the children programs. This font appeared between 1998 and 2000. In this version there were a lot of adjustments to keep the font in its spirit and uniformity between the various characters. Also added some new characters, which gave him another beautiful addition to be used in both title and text designs. Three weights (Regular, light and bold) have been created. Then the font was converted to OpenType to support Arabic, Persian and Urdu to be compatible with the various operation systems and modern software. The combination of modern Kufi and Naskh styles and varying between straight and curved parts made it a beautiful typeface appropriate to the titles and text, and able to meet the desire of the user in the design of ads and modern designs of various types of audio and visual.

Aeroport is a new typeface in the spirit of both German geometric sans serifs and Swiss neogrotesques. Organic versus geometric are two different universes that converges on nature systems and has its reflection on this new sans serif typeface. This script font was inspired by the type most commonly used during the period 1300s to 1500s. It is a compromise between historic truth and contemporary use. We particularly thank very much the Paris Sorbonne University professor who gave us freely and patiently numerous and valuable advice and criticism for this work. This font includes “long s”, naturally, as typically medieval, a lot of ligatures as “ff, ffi, fi, ft, sd, pp...”, some special glyphs frequently used as abbreviation in Latin texts during the medieval era for replacing letter groups such as “qui, qua, que, quia, quam, per, pri, pre...”, but also a few final and initial characters and final addable loops. Instructions for use, added, helps to identify them on keyboard. It can be used for web-site titles, posters and fliers design, editing ancient texts or greeting cards, all various sorts of presentations, as a very decorative, elegant and luxurious font... This font remains clear and easy to read over a wide range of sizes. Its original medieval size is about 18/24 points.

Centro Slab Press: Specimen Manual PDF Ever since its first release, Centro Slab has been particularly popular with corporate applications, branding and print media. The new Centro Slab Press version was redesigned with narrower proportions which are better suited for publications such as magazines and newspapers as well as web applications. Centro Slab Press is a very clean and legible typeface even at heavier weights, a characteristic which is not often seen among slab typefaces. German type designer Ingo Preuss created this family between 2014 and 2016. Instance is a new classic built on the foundation of over two centuries of history. Fresh and contemporary, while feeling familiar. This typeface is a high contrast sans serif typeface family and was designed for contemporary typography, especially for use in headlines and on posters, but also for reading purposes. A flexible, medium to high contrast, sans serif less about designing a stylish decorative design and more about applying contrast onto a neo-grotesk skeleton. Instance is more than just chopping off the serifs. The classical proportions of the capitals and x-heights were maintained, but the letterforms were rebalanced for use without serifs. Contemporary modifications were made to some widths, as well as an all new Light weight was created. Please note: Instance STD Office Packages is only as TrueType (* .ttf) and Standard-Version. I was working at Bozell Worldwide, an advertising agency, on their yearly promotional pitch. An art director was looking for a condensed informal headline treatment to be used on one of the new ad campaigns. I took several different font designs and started to condense and scale the proportions in the hopes of finding several good solutions. They finally settled on a version of Times Roman, scaled horizontally to about 50 percent proportions. I liked the look so much that I later went back to the drawing board and refined the concept by adding slanted serifs and a varying alignment on all the letter forms giving the typeface a very casual and informal appearance. At about that time, I was reading a book by Jack Kerouac, and was so inspired by his writings on the ‘beat generation’ that I decided to name the font ‘Beatnik’. Afterwards, I added a set of true small capitals and old style figures. I'm currently working on additional weights and variations to expand this ‘hip’ new font series. Groovin' baby.
