While browsing through a sourcebook on historic calligraphy and antique type I came on an interesting sample of a gothic style attributed to the legendary artist Albrecht Durer. I had previously seen fonts based on the peculiar style of lettering Durer used on prints for his signature and some captions, but this style was radically different and much more characteristic of the lettering and early printed types of the 'Northern Renaissance' which Durer was a big part of. Whether it's authentically Durer's work or not is up in the air, but it's a very nice example of early gothic type. We've called the resulting font Albrecht Durer Gothic and it's a very striking face well suited to titles and other contemporary uses where you need something heavy and eye catching.

“Miau” is a display typeface designed by “Cuchi, ¡qué Tipo”! (Hey, what a type!”). Its name comes from the onomatopoeia of "Meow" in Spanish, and it is only to be used for letters or single words. It is built from the basic skeleton of cursive script letters, and its origin and main concept is based on experimenting with shapes that play the limit of readability. Being a variable format typeface, we have from the thinnest and lightest version ("Hiss"), to the thickest, dense and compact ("Purr"), passing through the average ("meow"). The final result of this experimentation is defined into a very contemporary typeface with a geometric, modular and “no-terrestrial” flavour. It aims to be a representation of the times we live about typographic design, a whole explosion of implausible experiments and formals researches.

The basis for Series A Signage JNL is Highway Gothic; a type style design formally known as the FHWA Series. The font was developed by the United States Federal Highway Administration, and originally consisted of only capital letters and figures. Each Letter designation represented a character width from "A" (condensed) to "F" (wide). Due to poor visibility at high speeds, Series "A" was discontinued. At one point lower case characters were added to the various widths of the design, but this typeface revival is based on the original guidelines specified in the 1948 (reprinted 1952) book "Standard Alphabets for Highway Signs" [this was the original name for the FHWA series fonts preceding the eventual name change to Highway Gothic]. Unlike the original, Series A Signage JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Willard T. Sniffin designed this extra condensed art deco typeface for American Type Founders in 1932. Low-waisted capital letters curve in stunning geometric fashion next to large, oversized lowercase letters. The heart of this classic design is undeniably 1930s but it also looks just fine in contemporary situations. Alf Becker graced the pages of "Signs of the Times" magazine month after month for decades, presenting attractive and unusual hand lettered alphabets as inspiration for other sign painters and show card writers. From straightforward text faces to novelty ideas, Becker's talent as a master sign crafter was constant in his work. Show Card Casual JNL is one example of what is referred to as a "one stroke" alphabet (utilizing a single brush stroke in each direction to form the letter or number). Acid Green has quite a psychedelic flair, but its origins are from long before the sixties psychedelia. Its roots date back to 1914, from an unnamed alphabet by J.M. Epilepsja is an all-caps type family perfect for display works. It has been derived from stencil-sprayed and painted letters in the city space. The glyphs are simple but unordinary. Every letter has something from 3D illusion, but is flat simultaneously. The main feature and asset of this family is the ability to create multicolor text. The French call him Jean Baptiste instead of Giambattista! And that unknown graphic designer just took any old “J” from some newly cut Bodoni. All the new Bodoni cuts have square serifs, whereas the originals had rounded serifs and slightly concave feet. The single letter “J” with the squared off serif was for me like a road sign to start redesigning the entire Bodoni family. This font set is the second in a series from P22 Type Foundry based on the lettering styles of Frank Lloyd Wright. Created in 1931, the Exhibition lettering was intended primarily to accompany Frank Lloyd Wright's exhibition drawings and models. Many of the 72 Extras were designed to form continuous linking borders. Combinations of these geometric forms can provide endless variations of decorative elements in the style of Frank Lloyd Wright. Many of these images were based on Mr Wright's "Saguaro Forms and Cactus Flowers" illustration for an unused Liberty magazine cover of 1926. Other imagery in this set was derived from assorted geometric designs by Wright. Exhibition Regular, Light, and Bold have been remastered and now contain almost 400 characters including support for Western and Central European languages.

Base & Bloom is an experimental (but relatively organic) fusion of geometric monoline sans and high-contrast flourish didone. It was inspired by the lack of curious modern display sans as opposed to the uprise of contemporary serifs past couple of years. The idea was to incorporate flourishes not as unnecessary elements like swashes, but as a part of letter structure, which was an especially interesting task considering it was not a serif, which potentially could give more room for that. And after all, the idea pays off by generating many inventive letterform solutions. Base & Bloom has alternates for each letter (up to 11) so you can make endless combinations to find the perfect look. It is a bold choice for posters, album covers, identity and packaging, headlines, oversize typography, and editorial design.

Excelsor Script is inspired by lithographically produced scripts. It is softer and simpler than, for example, engraved Splendid Script, because its designer used pens and lithographic needles. The graver for steel is held in a quite different way and this has an influence on the shape of the letter. Similar type faces were in use from Neo-Classicism until the beginning of Art Nouveau, when they were pushed aside by a completely different view of festive typography. It has, in contradistinction to other scripts, slightly narrowed letters, which signifies a distinctive elegance without wasting space on the line. Rukou originated as a logo for a fashion designer. The idea was to make a fusion of a geometric typeface with the flavour of childish features. Rukou was inspired by school hand-writing models, but adds very specific and interesting features to it. Rather than focusing on readability, the primary goal was to have a unique type texture. This is the reason why lowercase is disconnected. The disconnected letters opened the possibility to create the special shapes for individual letters. The typefaces consist of two different styles inside one font. You can choose to set your titles in uppercase, or lowercase/titlecase. I became interested in designing Bodoni Classic because of a lazy graphic designer at Jacques Damase publishing house. He had to change a single letter on a bookcover about J. B. BODONI. The French call him Jean Baptiste instead of Giambattista! And that unknown graphic designer just took any old “J” from some newly cut Bodoni. All the new Bodoni cuts have square serifs, whereas the originals had rounded serifs and slightly concave feet. The single letter “J” with the squared off serif was for me like a road sign to start redesigning the entire Bodoni family. That’s exactly what I started in 1993 and a dozen years later I am finished. Okay, I am still adding new Bodoni Classics, but those are my personal additions. Yours very retro, Gert Wiescher

The font looks sweet and full of the best characters. You can use this font in your various design products such as invitations, mockups, embosses, branding cards and more. Martine includes a complete set of large international letters, numbers, punctuation marks and ligatures. All lowercase letters include the beginning and end of raids. Also, follow multilingual symbols. Scripts are coded with PUA Unicode, which allows full access to all additional characters without special design software. Mac users can use the Font Book, and Windows users can use Character Maps to view and copy additional characters to be included in your favorite text editor / application.
