Thanks to the Quay Brothers, London, who provided me with original materials, I was able to revive Carl Otto Czeschka’s beautiful Czeschka Antiqua which was first released by Genzsch & Heyse in 1917. Since nowadays the word Antiqua rather refers to fonts with serifs, I dropped it, also because this fanciful font is a humanist sans. To get access to all ligatures, it is recommended to also activate the OT feature Discretionary Ligatures.

Hesster Mofet is what I got after writing with an old and weathered calligraphic marker on textured paper. The characters were smoothened for a clean result, but since the original sketches had such a nice rough, edgy feel to them, they were also made into a complete font set. A couple of ligatures and a Hannibal Lecter reference were thrown in the mix as well. You can get both versions at a discount.

In 1994, John Benson designed the typefaces Caliban, Alexa and Balzano, all with similar characteristics. The typefaces are distinguished by their calligraphic style and their closeness to handwritten script. Caliban looks as though it were written with a broad tipped pen, with reserved yet lively figures which retain their legibility. Caliban is a good typefaces to use in short and middle length texts as well as headlines, wherever a personal touch is desired.

ITC Arid was designed by Rob Leuschke in 1997 as a lively calligraphy typeface which looks as though it was put to paper with a piece of charcoal. Generous capitals mix harmoniously with the more reserved lower case characters and the forward slant of both create a dynamic impression. Arid should be used in point sizes of 12 and larger and is well-suited for headlines and short to middle-length texts.

No mystery here: this typeface is based on Edward Johnston’s 1916 design for the London Underground and, more specifically, as it was employed in posters boosting The Tube. To implement “lowercase” numbers, refer to the PDF character map, or activate Stylistic Set 1 in OpenType-aware applications. Both versions include the complete Unicode Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets, as well as localization for Lithuanian, Moldovan and Romanian.

Ratafly is versatile serifed font that can be used for display or text. The family has ten styles, with five weights and italics for each weight. The name Ratafly is a reference to the origin of the family. It began by blending two very different serifed typefaces, Rataczak and FlyHigh. After a lot of cleaning up, the end result is a family that works better for book text than either of the parents.

This font is based on the handwriting of Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. Using his many letters, drafts, notes- and sketchbooks as reference, this font characterizes the elegant yet sometimes quite irregular writing style Munch had. To resemble naturalistic writing and remain as authentic as possible, a combination of extended ligatures and alternates has been included, as well as Swash characters (accessible via open-type). The long and frustrating search for a dynamic, monoline script drew our attention to the lack of such a typeface. This prompted us to create our very own, Terital, named after the 1960s Italian overcoat advertisement that was the original reference point for its 2003 creation. Fearing the odd all-caps script setting, we cheekily designed Terital as a lowercase set. This limitation was revised in the 2011 version. Beautiful swash capitals were also added.

Bezura is a font designed with an emphasis on minimal nodes. All bezier curves in this font have reference points on 90° or 45°. All corners have a smooth curve to them. It would probably work great when used in vinyl-cutting applications on signage. While it has a very methodical construction, there is enough sway in the font to give it a loose feel for professional projects with an unprofessional feel.

Zapfino Arabic is designed by Nadine Chahine as the Arabic companion to Hermann Zapf’s iconic Zapfino typeface, with the approval of Prof. Zapf. The design is an evolution of Arabic calligraphic traditions that combines Naskh and Nastaaliq to form a backward slanted calligraphic style. The character proportions refer to Naskh traditions but the isolated and final forms bring with them an exaggerated swash-like movement that references the extravagant ascenders and descenders of Zapfino.
