ITC Coventry is the work of American designer Brian Sooy. ITC Coventry is what type would look like if you left a gothic font out in the rain. IF you look close, you'll see the roots of a handsome sans serif font buried under a layer of grime and rust, basically." The low-budget student flyers that Sooy saw in the Coventry section of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, inspired him to design this font and the result is a typeface which looks as though it has been faxed or photocopied many times. "While it looks very irregular in text, it's very carefully spaced to give that effect," says Sooy. ITC Coventry was designed to work just as well in text as in headlines or even on billboards."

An attempt to insert a hammer into a work will require that such hammer be drawn, scanned, resized and inserted -- a laborious work. With TechTools such drawing, scanning, resizing to fit is a thing of the past. Technical Tools can now be inserted directly into any application.

Rollerscript is, in effect, a more modern version of Olicana whose letterforms were drafted using a nibbed pen and ink. Handwriting tends to change depending on what instrument you're using and with Rollerscript the outcome is decidedly more casual and informal than Olicana, though equally realistic. Pronounced pressure points where characters start, end or join make for a very authentic hand drawn appearance which is enhanced still further through the use of over 100 standard ligatures. Character pairings like ‘tt’ or ‘gg’ in normal handwriting fonts never look natural but in Rollerscript will now automatically change as you type! Rollerscript’s handwriting credentials are given a further boost with the inclusion of multiple underlines and sketched icons, arrows and emoticons. Piano Keybuild is a small font designed for creating piano keyboard layouts. It was inspired by my Yamaha CLP-840, a wonderful digital piano. The face consists entirely of keyboard keys that can be combined to form realistic keyboards. These keys come in four styles: basic outlined keys, filler keys (for adding a second color inside the outlines), keys with note names, and pre-made sets of keys. Keys of a given kind will kern with one another, but only in the order that they would naturally occur on a keyboard. (This makes it easier to spot incorrect key sequences.) It also includes digits 0 through 9 inspired by numerals used in traditional music notation. The user guide (PDF under Gallery tab) demonstrates the locations of all the glyphs as well as how to use them together effectively.

Stretto (Italian for narrow) is a revival, correction and expansive update of an Aldo Novarese reverse-stress font called Sintex, which he did for VGC in 1973. Openly idiosyncratic and playfully rebellious in its design, this alphabet fuses the straights and rounds in an unusual manner, riffing on the idea of hand-made sign and wood type forms while adhering to its odd grid’s parameters. In spite of its counter-stress, its legibility is high and even, helped by its unicase forms and very distinct counters. First released in 2007, it became quite popular with film studios and nostalgia designers (Sintex was the font used for David Bowie’s Hunky Dory album and Life on Mars? single). A dozen years later we revisited it for an update. Stretto now comes with over 660 characters and includes Pan European language support.

Acto is a type system designed as the sans serif counterpart of the previous released Acta. Both type families were designed in 2010 for the redesign of the Chilean newspaper La Tercera, but unlike some of our previous fonts (i.e., Leitura) Acto doesn't exactly match Acta in terms of structure, so they can live on their own. Acto is our first sans where the uppercase has the same height as the ascenders, so we decided to avoid common problems like the confusion between the I and the l, by drawing a curved l. We kept that spirit by removing the spurs on the b, g and q, resulting on a more warm typeface than Prelo, for instance. In the end it's a very powerful sans family, with eleven weights with matching italics, for editorial and corporate design.

Varisse spans over two centuries of type design and draws its inspiration from well-loved classics that are as fresh today as they were when they were created. The range stretches from a quintessential 18th century transitional serif to an uncompromising 20th century sans. Think Baskerville, think Gill. The idea was to create a family that shared similar forms and the same vertical metrics, allowing them to be mixed to provide impact and readability as required. I've been working on a usable sans serif for body copy since the mid-1990s (though I certainly did not know it at the time). This one works well. It started life back in the mists of time as a scan of an old German font by Carl Fahrenwaldt. It was developed fully as a synergized serif with strong traditional roots and released as Bergsland Pro. Now it finally makes it to where I was headed all along as a sans text font. This is a well modulated humanist, sans serif font family with many OpenType features and over 600 characters: Caps, lower case, small caps, ligatures, swashes, small cap figures, old style figures, numerators, denominators, accents characters, ordinal numbers, and so on. It is designed for text use in body copy. But it also works very well for elegantly stylized display.

The rendezvous of the two terms seems quite unique and utopistic today, but it is comforting to see that it was natural at some time deep down in Russian history. Bits of both meanings were going through my mind while I was designing this typeface. Mir’s character set is multiscript – Latin, Cyrillic and Greek – and extends to many parts of the linguistic world. In fact it covers more than 100 languages. Stylistic consistency between the language systems make typographic border crossings painless even where national borders are still closely guarded. And in regions where mathematics, physics or chemistry are to be expressed, a rich set of OpenType features lets Mir master also these situations. Serious things are best be said in a relaxed, unpretentious way. So Mir doesn’t put on a show. Mir has authority without being authoritarian, it is serious but not stern.
