The year 2022 went and 2023 came. I can honestly say that last year was a horrible year and I am happy it ended a couple of days ago. The first week after New Year’s Eve always fills my head with the U2 song ‘New Year’s Day’ - so I named this font after a line from the lyrics. I also happened to watch a fantastic movie called ‘Im Westen Nights Neues’, directed by Edward Berger, but based on a book by Erich Maria Remarque, which, in English, was published as ‘All Quiet On The Western Front’. So there you have it: naming a font in 2 easy steps! ;-) All Is Quiet is a lovely brush font, which I created using my father in law’s Chinese pencil and ink. I can suggest some uses here, but I am convinced you can come up with that yourself.

Double Nines JNL is a dingbat font containing fifty-five glyphs for the tiles found in the second level of domino games. Sets of dominoes can be of either double six, double nine or double twelve. In this font, the double blank tile is located on the zero keystroke, while the one/blank and 1/1 tiles are on the 1 and 2 keystrokes. Loncherita is a typeface created by Fabio Eduardo Godoy Angel and has 5 files: Fill, Fill Outline, Shadow 1, Shadow 2 and dingbats variables. Its purpose is to serve as a childish fantasy modular typography useful in logo design and merchandising. It is also recommended to compose expressive titles that need the option in which letters can be colored by layers. In 1929, English type designer, William Addison Dwiggins, (WAD) was commissioned by the Merganthaler Type Foundry to design a warmer, more humanistic, and less mechanical sans to effectively compete with Futura, a highly-popular geometric sans designed by Paul Renner in 1927 and first released by Meganthaler's arch-rival, the Bauer Type Foundry in Germany. FontHaus has licensed from GroupType updated files with additional styles including 2 rough versions and a soft together with the classic Regular styles and weights. Hopeless Diamond is a contemporary display typeface inspired by the sculptural muscle of 19th century carved lettering and the radical forms of the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber and the F-117 Nighthawk stealth strike aircraft. The typeface itself contains three different styles, each with an italic and an alternate character set that can be used to generate a number of interesting permutations. The name was taken from the derisive term that test pilots used for Have Blue, a late '70s stealth demonstration aircraft –and early prototype for the F-117— designed and built by Lockheed's Skunkworks division. Due to its unusual shape and departure from received aerodynamic wisdom, Have Blue was referred to as the ‘Hopeless Diamond’.

A unique design accurately revived by Steve Matteson in 2021. Frederic Goudy designed Companion Old Style for Women’s Home Companion in 1928. In his own words: “I believe the new letter I showed him, both in roman and italic, is one of the most distinctive types I have ever made. It incorporates features which deliberately violate tradition as to stress and curves, but which are so handled that attention is not specifically drawn to the innovations introduced.” Companion Old Style exudes the style of pre-World War 2 Americana. This is Alter Littera’s first original design. The font has been created by attempting not to reproduce any historical typeface in particular, but only to re-create the overall forms and style of classic black-letters from different time periods and places. Two specific sources must be acknowledeged nonetheless: (1) the “Black” type from William Caslon’s A Specimen of Printing Types (1785), and (2) the “Caslon Gotisch” type by D. Stempel A.G. (1926). In addition to the usual standard characters for typesetting in modern Western languages, the font includes a comprehensive set of special characters, alternates and ligatures, plus Opentype features, that can be used for typesetting as in antique writings and printings. The glyphs are clean, smooth and definitely readable, so the font will be suitable not only for large titles and headings, but also for full text pages. Stencil fonts often evoke rigid and sterile images such as packing crates or military vehicles, but Super Duty is somewhere between serious and fun. Super Duty is designed with sharp mechanical angles which give the letterforms a square-jawed and ready-for-action feel. A rounder companion version is included that has the sharp edges smoothed out. Unlike most stencil fonts this one has a lowercase that matches the strength of the uppercase. The lowercase has been designed with an x-height equivalent to the cap height and barely protruding ascenders so that the user can interchange the upper and lower letterforms for a funky graphic effect. Super Duty is a robust and versatile stencil font family of 25 fonts — sharp and round variations with closed versions in 2 weights each. These are provided in 3 widths — regular, narrow and condensed. Super Duty includes a text version that has more regular proportions and letter forms for a well rounded display font system.

Grace was designed by Elisabeth Megnet and appeared with Linotype in 1992. The font is a part of the package Calligraphy for Print, which also contains Ruling Script and Wiesbaden Swing. Calligraphy for Print 2 completes the set. These packages offer modern calligraphy fonts particularly well-suited to use in posters, magazines and advertisements. The basic style of Grace is based on the Gothic miniscule of the 13th century. It represents a modern philosophy held by Andre Guertler, Professor of Typography in Basel with whom Megnet once studied. With this philosophy, calligraphy is not to be seen as a decorative art, and fonts created according to this tenet have far fewer ornamental strokes. They are eccentric, drawn out and almost bulky. Like Gothic forms, one of the predecessors of this font, Grace gives vertical lines a particular emphasis. This font is not meant for long texts but makes a distinctive impression in shorter texts or headlines.

I've always been in love with fat didones. That’s the reason of Posh. In search of something unique, I started this family back in 2013 with the aim of creating the fattest yet readable bodonian typeface in the market: It was a challenge, because roman fonts need generous counters (or what some call white spaces) and taking them to the extreme of inexistence attempted against the construction of many glyphs. Ears, dots, terminals and serifs always need some extra space so I had to find the exact point of boldness to make characters which have those attributes work well in the middle of those which haven't. (1) After a while, I felt I was again ‘in my element’: Big contrasted letters, sexy and elegant curves, and that Lubalinesque feeling that characterise my fonts. (2) Words written with Posh are a explosion of elegance and sensuality due to the fact that its didone attributes were exaggerated. Since it’s full of alternate glyphs, one can change and choose them until a nice block of ‘‘black’’ is achieved. (3) To accompany the regular style, I designed Posh Inline, a font with the same quantity of glyphs than the regular one; an all caps style called Posh Capitals, and also a really playful Italic version. I hope you find this one delicious like I do! This font is dedicated to all who understand letters are not just meant to be read, but also to be appreciated in group and individually. Enjoy it. NOTES (1) In example, it can be easy to design a fat letter ‘n’ with almost no counter, but really tough to make a satisfactory letter ‘s’ with serifs to match that ‘n’. This 12-font family employs several unique features including a 2-part Chisel set which allows for the look of stone incised lettering. Hedonic has just a hint of a slab serif and even that is used so sparingly that it almost feels like a sans serif font. Its design does appear to be painfully simple but there are many interesting features including a selection of weights, small caps with old style numerals and display weights that make it very useful. And legible. Old style numerals are included with the small caps and italics. Also for display purposes are two "Chisel" fonts.
