Prof. G. Pott’s Ruling Script first appeared in 1992 with Linotype-Hell. The font is a part of the package Calligraphie for Print, which also contains Sho and Wiesbaden Swing. Calligraphie for Print 2 completes the set. These packages offer modern calligraphy fonts particularly well-suited to use in posters, magazines and advertisements. Ruling Script looks like the zestful handwriting of a calligrapher but its legibility even in longer sentences set it apart from others of its type.

Once upon a time (a.ka. 1984), there was a Goth band who called themselves "Hemingway's Shotgun." As a symbol of his commitment to this band, the bass player acquired a tattoo of a shotgun on his forearm. Unfortunately, this tattoo wasn't very well drawn: the barrel was much too short, and was much thinner at one end than the other. The tattoo rather resembled a small, cordless, rechargeable hand-held vacuum cleaner. Thus, the band "Hemingway's Dustbuster" was born.

Old Tijuana JNL was modeled from the hand lettered title on the cover of the 1939 sheet music for "Class Will Tell" and is available in both regular and oblique versions. Casual, playful and reminiscent of the "serape" style of pseudo-Mexican lettering found on ad designs of the 1930s and 1940s, the type face isn't just for South of the Border themes. Use it for any festive occasion and the design will blend in well.

Crowd Funded fonts wasn’t really crowd funded… In fact, all of the funding came from me, as I had to buy paper and a new pen to get this font going! Crowd Funded is an all caps display font, which I based on a recent font of mine called Longreach. Crowd Funded is narrower and rounder than Longreach and, in a way, more delicate. I have no particular love for pigeons, but I read an interesting article about war pigeons being used to send messages to an fro. One pigeon (called William of Orange) even saved more than 2000 soldiers during the Battle of Arnhem. Pigeon Post is a lovely cartoon and kids font. Invites is a digital recreation of a 1920’s mechanical script that has never existed. I designed it for my wedding invitations last year and named it in honor of my (ex)wife. Who said it wasn’t her. And she was right. So now it’s called something different. I wanted a sweet, romantic name ... Iris? Taken. Lily? Taken. Iris Lily? Cumbersome. I wanted something short and inviting. Uh ... hmmm.

Buddy Slender is the narrower version of the companion sans for Contenu, the book font family designed for a book on book family design called Practical Font Design. It's a loose, free, easy to read sans, so when my wife suggested Buddy, it clicked. This is the 2-font Buddy Slender family of Regular & Bold. Praxis™ was designed in 1976 by Gerard Unger for the German technology corporation Dr.-Ing Rudolf Hell. Praxis is the sans serif counterpart to Demos, another early digital type designed by Unger, who is an accomplished Dutch typographer and teacher. Praxis and Demos share important characteristics, such as open counters, a tall x-height, and blunt stroke terminations. Both faces have very little thick/thin variation, which facilitates smooth linear enlargement and reduction. And like Demos, Praxis is a flexible and legible typeface that works well in small point sizes and on low-quality paper (office documents, newsletters, newspapers, etc.). The word "Praxis" comes from Greek, and means "a practical application." In the late 1990s, Demos and Praxis, along with Univers 57, were selected as the official typefaces of the German Government. ITC Tabula is meant to be read. The design grew out of a study to create a font to set film subtitles. According to Julien Janiszewski, the face's Paris-based designer, “I set parameters for the design whereby the letters had to be able to hold up at very small sizes when set on film and yet must be able to be enlarged 2000 times to be read on a theatre screen.” The subtitle font was not completed, but several months later Janiszewski revisited the design and made a discovery. “I realized that the constraints I had established for the subtitling font was not that far from those people could have in creating typographic signage. Many time this calls for a font that can be used easily in very large sizes for headlines on highway billboards and quite small for text copy.” Work proceeded for two more years before Janiszewski was satisfied with the results. The final design is a somewhat squared sans serif family of four weighs with corresponding italics. Janiszewski also wanted to create what he calls a “sensitive sans-one that is not restricted to geometric shapes but has a subtle calligraphic, foundation.” ITC Tabula is not only easy to read, it is also a distinctive and handsome design.
