Winchell is the only identified typeface designed in Buffalo, NY prior to the formation of P22 type foundry. It was created by Edward Winchell of the Matthews-Northrup Printing Works and released by the Inland Type Foundry in 1903. The Winchell typeface was also made in Wood by the Hamilton Manufacturing company in the mid 20th Century. The Winchell typeface is a Clarendon styled slab serif that clearly has the look of a pre-modernist design. E.E. Winchell’s Arts & Crafts tendencies show through in this design

Traveling through the central and southern parts of Mexico a number of years ago, I couldn’t help but be impressed with the amazing architecture of the indigenous peoples. From the giant pyramids of Teotihuacan to the extensive and impressive layout of Chichén Itzá to the smaller-but-spectacular Monte Alban ruins in Oaxaca, creativity abounds. One of the things I most enjoyed were the carved stone friezes that ran around many of the more complete buildings. Oaxaca calls to mind those beautiful carvings and, strangely, Chinese writing.

In the beginning of his typographic design work, Jeff Levine produced a large number of freeware dingbat fonts utilizing very rudimentary font creation software. Although popular in the world of home crafts, there were many issues inherent with those early font files. Jeff has chosen to clean up and update some of these fonts and make them commercially available. PLEASE NOTE: Refer to the license agreement regarding use of Jeff Levine's art-based fonts. Qiproko is a typeface with semi-modular and geometric shapes. The squared curves remind the shape of the cathode ray tube monitor, giving a retro feel to the characters. An ad in the April 19, 1919 edition of Motion Picture News for the (now lost) silent drama "Josselyn's Wife" featured some wonderfully stylized Art Nouveau hand lettering. Alf Becker graced many issues of “Signs of the Times” (a trade magazine for the sign industry) with his innovative hand lettered alphabets for others to use as design inspirations. His 134th submission was titled “Post Card Type”, a condensed thick-and-thin stylized Art Deco design. This served as the inspiration for Tourist Postcard JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. Thanks to Tod Swormstedt of S.T. Media Group and the American Sign Museum for providing the work image for this type revival.

A pleasant Art Nouveau hand lettered title is featured on the sheet music cover for "You Brought A New Kind of Love to Me". The song is from the 1930 Paramount film "The Big Pond" featuring Maurice Chevalier and Claudette Colbert. The original lettering was done with a round point pen nib, and showed a lot of small inconsistencies. For the digital version it has been "tightened up" a bit and is now available as Nouveau Fashion JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.

The Raleigh Hotel at 18th Street and Collins Avenue on Miami Beach is an Art Deco landmark and part of the city's popular tourist district. A vintage matchbook from the hotel had its name hand lettered in what is now Beachfront Hotel JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions. The lower case letters have been made more traditional, eliminating the Deco-influenced "overhangs" present on the capital letters, and an alternate "E" from the original matchbook design is available on the bar and broken bar keys.
