Adis Ababa is a font based on an ancient Ge'ez script. The Ge'ez alphabet is the written language of the ancient ancestors of the Ethiopian and Eritrean nation. It is not a Latin or Greek based alphabet and I have striven in this font to present a readable Latin alphabet that visually reminds me of some of the examples of the writing that I have seen.

The uppercase letters of this magical, mystical face is based on various alchemical symbols used from the thirteenth through the sixteenth century; the lowercase letters are based on those found on a 1935 poster, signed simply “Strekalovsky.” Ideal for adding a little pocus to your hocus, or cadabra to your abra. Within the 1893 edition of the Barnhart Bros. & Spindler type specimen book is “Bisque”, a text and headline type face with a charmingly eccentric look. Some upper case characters take on more of a squarer look than others, while the lower case has a higher ‘x’ height. This type revival is now available as Soup and Salad JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Anarckhie is a decorative slab-serifed typeface with a calligraphic origin. The horizontal elements of the upper-case letters are below their midpoint, and the x-height of the lower-case letters is unusually small. There is some variation in the weights of the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal elements. The small x-height makes this typeface appear smaller than its point size would indicate.

Where most typefaces are designed by just one individual, quite a few people have been involved in perfecting Cheltenham over the times. In 1896, the architect Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue created the initial design for Ingalls Kimball at the Cheltenham Press. Just a few years later, Morris Fuller Benton devised a full family of Cheltenhams for ATF. This is the basis of the design we have today. In 1975, Tony Stan revived this classic typeface and did what was customary at the time: increase the x-height and make the Cheltenham family more regular. A multi-line Art Deco design, it epitomizes both the typographic style and the night life of the time, when supper clubs featuring big bands were at their peak. Torch Singers were female vocalists who typically sang melancholy love songs of lost love and heartbreak.
