Wakerobin takes its charming swagger from the hand-painted billboard, poster and signage lettering of the mid-19th century. These showy styles did everything they could to stand out from the background cacophony of advertising, with signwriters using sharp and high contrast serif letters, squared block shapes, or art nouveau forms to grab the attention of passersby. Wakerobin embraces the spirit of these letterforms, bringing these various styles together in one typeface - as if users had their own sign painter on hand. Just as lettering artists had to adapt to a variety of sizes - from wide streetcar lettering to compressed forms that squeezed into narrow Victorian windows - the variable version of Wakerobin scales up and down in width to fit whatever environment the user’s working in. The static fonts come in three widths and five weights. As well as its adaptability, Wakerobin is bursting with vintage flavour, making it hard to ignore. Alimentary (adjective): relating to nourishment or sustenance. If you've seen my other fonts, you know I tend to lean into food-based names. This name has to do with food and science combined, so it's double nerdy in the ways I like to be nerdy! I started with Alimentary Medium, which was inspired by my shorter, wider font MacGuffin - I wanted something taller, narrower, with a hip and retro feel. When I finished the Medium weight, I felt like I wanted a Light weight. Then a Heavy weight. Then I figured, "what the heck," and made an outline version of the Medium weight too. In the end, I wound up with four members of the Alimentary family, each with over 700 glyphs! Not only do they all have the basics (A-Z, a-z, 0-9, and tons of punctuation), but they also each have 330 characters for European language support, and a limited selection of Greek, Coptic, and Cyrillic characters. Plus a double handful of alternates and ligatures to add a little variety to your designs! And of course, all of the Alimentary fonts are super-smoothed, with reduced nodes and clean curves, so whether you're cutting them out, printing them, engraving them, or using them in a way I haven't even thought of, these fonts will be sharp and crisp!

First introduced by the American Type Founders Company in 1906, Railroad Gothic was the quintessential typographic expression of turn-of-the-century industrial spirit—bold and brash in tone, and a little rough around the edges. A favorite for the plain speak of big headlines, Railroad Gothic quickly gained popularity among printers. Its condensed but robust forms were likely a source of inspiration for later families of industrial sans serifs. The design feels like a cleaned-up version of some earlier Victorian gothics, notable for their uneven proportions and awkward letterforms. Mark van Bronkhorst designed MVB Celestia Antiqua at a time when font choice was limited. Design was characterized by overuse of the few fonts that came with laser printers. A rustic typeface, recalling the roughness and irregularity of pre-digital printing, was a response to the cold crispness of DTP. MVB Celestia Antiqua holds its own among a large group of other “weathered” serif fonts, in part due to the size of the family: three weights, small caps, italics, and two titling styles. But it's also successful because it's simply drawn well, the contours only as rough as they need to be, enabling text at any size, large or small.

The idea for Gilman started simple enough, a serif typeface that works well for large amounts of text. However, after many struggles creating a quality typeface digitally, I decided to first draw the complete alphabet by hand on paper, and then trace that digitally. Columbia Titling is a titling-caps display family based on wide Clarendon-style wood type and industrial signage design from the late-19th and early-20th Century. Columbia Titling includes a small set of OpenType features, including both tabular and proportional figures, special superscript ordinal suffixes, underlined superscript alternate letters, and OpenType fractions. Columbia Titling can have a ‘period feel’ depending on its use, but is fresh enough to use in contemporary designs, like magazine headlines, invitations, or stationery. Vienna designer Viktor Solt has a love affair with handwriting. “Usually” he says “when I start with a specific calligraphic style I take some historic specimens and try to integrate their main features into my own handwriting.” Although there are hints of various 18th-century calligraphic styles in Ballerino it was not based on any historical model. The swash ascenders and descenders on the lowercase are all slightly different; this and the rough texture of the edges gives Ballerino a distinctly hand-written feel. The swash caps are meant to be used only in conjunction with the lowercase not to be combined with each other.

The original plan for Atlantic was to design a typeface in the Venetian syle of the Renaissance, with handwriting character and large ascenders. There is a wave-rolling unevenness in both the x- and cap-height caused by the strong ductus pointing to the upper right, together with heavily curved serifs, resulting in a very lively image of text on a page. Atlantic – its name reflects the ocean, ships, carriers and loads, tourism and so on. These are the themes Atlantic is best suited for. Beverly Hills is an all-caps display face in the Art Deco style. Its design features dramatically low crossbars, and each letter has a fine inline highlight. The most prominent letters in this typeface are clearly the E, F, G, and K, while the elegantly narrow S is sure to delight. Polynesiac was discovered deep in the jungle on a cave wall on Gilligan's Island. "I was looking for ancient pictographs, and I find this crap instead!" says designer Wesley Poole. A set of transfer patterns for sewing decorative monogram initials on clothing was manufactured by Women's Day magazine circa the 1940s. Designed by renowned Copenhagen-born industrial artist and letterer Gustav Boerge Jensen [April 8, 1898 - June 27, 1954], these initials have been redrawn into a digital font entitled Danish Script Initials JNL. Kigara was Elena’s first attempt at designing a text typeface. The result is not exactly a conventional book face. Strongly influenced by handwriting, Kigara is best suited for short texts set at medium to large sizes. About 7 years ago, I released a beautiful (imho) Art Deco inspired font called Weltschmerz. Weltschmerz was an all-caps font and I always wanted to do a lower case version as well. But as things so often go in life, I never found the time and forgot about it. Some time ago, I ‘rediscovered’ my good old Weltschmerz font and remembered that I wanted to create a lower case version. Without further ado: here is Neuer Weltschmerz (‘New Weltschmerz’). I redid the whole font, better kerning, better spacing, better looks… and with a proper lower case! I did keep the original handwritten look intact - because, well, it IS hand made!
