I made Cut Along by stealing some red cardboard from my kids (red, because they didn’t have any black…) and cutting out the glyphs one by one with a pair of scissors. I then pasted the shapes onto white paper, scanned them and turned them into a font. Cut Along is a very nice font for ads, book covers, packaging and children’s books. Enjoy!

On the sheet music cover of the 1931 song "When the Autumn Leaves of Life Begin to Fall", the title is hand-lettered using a round tipped nib pen. The combination of both an Art Deco lettering style and the rounded ends of the characters creates an exquisite, yet simple type design digitally preserved as Deco Roundpoint JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions.

A vintage matchbook advertising the New York Liquor Mart – oddly enough, located in Chicago, Illinois – featured a pen and ink line drawing of the store’s exterior. The Art Deco lettering on the mansard was portrayed with a straight left shadow (as opposed to drop cast or extruded), making for an interesting multi-line typeface design. This is now digitally available as Packaged Goods JNL.

This rough, raw typeface is based on the lettering in Ben Shahn's iconic poster protesting the execution of Bartolomeo Vanzetti and Nicolo Sacco in 1927. All possible uppercase and lowercase forms have been kerned, and activating Contextual Alternates in OpenType-aware applications will alternate those forms for a more random appearance. Both versions contain the complete Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets.

This font is influenced by Walbaum. However, I did not just trace the design, but sort of had the image in my head while I drew the letters. This font is balanced by not being entirely Walbaum, but still basically is. I've named it "NoraPen." Nora comes from the name of the main character in Ibsen's "A Doll's House," and Pen means a cage for livestock.

DubTone is simple sans serif font with a halftone texture from an old newspaper scan on an old flatbed scanner. This font was created for a movie poster in 2003 and then finally converted to a font in 2012. Ergo is a relatively new font oriented on the form philosophy of Univers and Frutiger, namely, that a font which the eye should see as correct cannot be constructed. The eye tends to enlarge horizontals and to perceive verticals as weaker, and the stroke differences of Ergo are therefore designed to accommodate this tendency. Ergo makes a dynamic and modern impression and is extremely legible.

Propaganda in a poodle skirt? Another gem gleaned from Schrifti Alphabeti, a book of Cyrillic alphabets published in Kiev (now Ukraine, then USSR) in 1979. This picturesque, beautiful German Blackletter typeface was originally released by Benjamin Becker Succ, Frankfurt am Main, then named ?K�nstlergotisch?. Ralph M. Unger redesigned, digitally remastered and completed the font based on old catalogues/specimen. In honor of the famous Cranach family, German artists in medieval times, we renamed the font after them. The shadowed version was added for even more eye-catching purposes, e.g. in headlines.

In 1994, John Benson designed Alexa, Caliban and Balzano, three typefaces with a similar style. Characteristic of all of them is their calligraphic touch and the likeness to handwriting. In the middle of 18th century Leibniz Fraktur appeared in German print shops. This blackletter font with its great x-height preserved the then fashioned trunk in many of its uppercase letters. It was a cast font of Genzsch & Heyse, Hamburg. Leibniz Fraktur contains a bunch of useful ligatures, and by typing 'N', 'o' and period plus activating the Ordinals feature you get an oldstyle number-sign.

JY&A’s most distinctive calligraphic font, Yan Series 333 is usable at all resolutions and remains legible. Even though it has a strong calligraphic influence, the Yan Series is ideal for text settings that have to appear special. Designed by Jack Yan, the family was developed between 1987 and 1993. Yan studied the effect of a nylon-tip, rather than steel-nib, pen on paper.

Skeleton Slab brings a new elegance to a classic form. I was thinking of calling it Ozymanidias, after Shelley’s poem, because it evokes memories of ancient runic inscriptions, but then I thought that was maybe a bit pretentious, and I decided I'd keep it simple and descriptive. Besides, I wasn't sure how to spell Ozymandias! Skeleton Slab has small caps in place of lower case.

Miniver was inspired by a trip made to the library, looking for new ideas. Immediately gravitating towards the DVD for the 1942 film Mrs. Miniver, the hand-lettered title on the cover had a very contemporary look and feel so, there was the 'springboard' into a new font. First drawn were the inline forms and then they were traced, utilizing a playful 'cutout' effect.

Montello started out as an Illustrator exercise (a skill I am still learning). I made a couple of glyphs for fun, then realised it would make a nice font. The result is Montello. Montello is a classic connected script font, very neat and (in my humble opinion) not an eye-sore either. Montello comes with a whole bunch of ligatures for letters that just won’t connect nicely.

Amelia Jayne is Ted Staunton's updated revision and expansion of his own Amelia decorative cap font. Satin Blues is my easy going and very legible sans. Actually I drew this by hand and then traced each letter digitally, leaving a super steady, yet funky, comic font. I've made two versions: the Regular and Soft. The Soft version has rounded edges, which gives a smoother look. The font is very suitable for anything that needs a clear but wild comic look.

Sign Template JNL is based on one of the many plastic lettering guides manufactured by the now-defunct Wright-Regan Instrument Company (also known as WRICO). A recent walk down memory lane through old college sketchbooks revealed a collection of caricature fish doodles. Then the sketches were discovered by my son who, being a marine life enthusiast, promptly demanded that I draw more fish. Thus, a collection of 71 fish-inspired drawings and bubbly numbers was born. There is even a lemon, since no fish is really complete without one.

CA Mechano is quite what the name suggests – A mechanical typeface. Pretty straight forward and all-caps as long as you don’t activate the stylistic set "disorder". You will see what happens then: a lot of fun for the typographic eye. A more consumable distraction is offered by the other stylistic set. You will dis­cover peacefully rounded letters in the neighborhood of strictly mechanically constructed glyphs.
