Cassandre employed strong graphic elements and a chiaroscuro letter treatment to the 1939 poster lettering that inspired this font. An antique, hand-cut metal stencil for the Chicago-Burlington rail route stating “CB&Q RR – Private Property” inspired the sans serif stencil design Midwest Railway JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Stencil Patterns JNL collects into one digital file a number of decorative stencil patterns from decades past. These charming illustrations were re-drawn by Jeff Levine using images of vintage oilboard stencils made over fifty years ago. While these are useful as stand-alone embellishments for any print projects, they can also be scaled and printed out onto card or acetate stock for hand-cutting as new stencil templates. A special note of thanks goes to fellow type designer and author, Leslie Cabarga. He supplied the bulk of the images used in designing this font file. Eric Stevens's latest typeface, ITC Lintball, combines two unusual features: its letterforms are based on the serifless lettering inscribed in stone by the ancient Greeks, yet the wobbly edges of the strokes, and especially the slightly wider “lintballs” on the ends, suggest lettering done on paper with a modern felt-tip pen. A shape-shaky script font that reacts to audio! Thanks to the variable font technology, fonts today can be variable be it weight, width or any other parameters that are defined by values such as shape! Even better: in html, with a bit of css (and in this case, javascript as well) it is possible to animate them between these values. This gave me the idea to create something really fun which is a quirky, informal handwritten font that can react to sound. The typography on a 1964 children’s activity book published by Whitman entitled “Build with Stencils” was in a bold, condensed design. The only problem was that the ‘rails’ [the parts that divide a letter into stencil pieces] were too narrow and would disappear at smaller point sizes. Widening the ‘rails’ just a bit greatly improved the appearance of the stencil characters. Play Day Stencil JNL is now available in both regular and oblique versions. In its day, the Whitman Publishing Company of Racine, Wisconsin published dozens of activity books for children, including a number of them with stencils. The company was a division of Western Publishers from the early 1900s through the 1970s, but went through a number of sales and name changes. Currently [as Whitman once again] it is owned by Anderson Press, and is known for its line of coin folders and books on coin collecting.
