Dubbel Zout in Dutch means ‘Double Salt’. I admit, it sounds better in Dutch… Dubbel Zout is a kind of licorice which we (in Holland) love! Not many people actually like it, but I know of one addict in Denmark, who eats it by the bagful. Dubbel Zout is a ‘crayon-ish’ font - all caps, different upper and lower glyphs that you can mix and a royal assortment of diacritics. It may be an acquired taste, but once you get used to it, you’re hooked!

Blackthorn draws on the tradition of Art Nouveau font design with some elements of western or circus style fonts, but an overall effect which may have more in common with the psychedelic era than anything else. It has a feel somewhat akin to some of the lettering of Alphons Mucha particularly the Abaddon and Gehenna fonts. It's very stylized and kind of wicked looking. You can see where the name comes from if you note the thorn-like spurs on the upper part of each character.

Tritura is my personal take on textura fonts. Several methods of drawing were used, both analog and digital, to bring its overall rough feel. Each and every character was designed not from historical references, but from my view on this very peculiar typographic style. Instead of following established rules of character construction, I preferred to just keep in mind the mechanics of the pens used in textura drawings, as well as the little I already knew from the style, to create my own characters from there.

Gastromond began about five years ago with a question: why are fat faces always based on Didot or Bodoni models? Was there a reason that the stresses of these display faces was always vertical or horizontal and never angled? It was time to find out. Gastromond is meant to blend the Renaissance stylings of the Garamond types with the Victorian outlandishness of the fat faces. The result is an emphatic take on a classic genre. I found this type specimen on the statue of Jan Hus in Prague’s Old Town Square. The statue was designed in 1903 by Ladislav Saloun, and its writing is the cutest Nouveau font I've ever seen. Filling in the blanks, I realized the need for a standard lower case because the caps are so wild. The result is a very type-able and dynamic Nouveau. Budare is a geometric font family that rebelled to find its own identity within an ocean of other typefaces of the same style. Layering of individual styles forms the basis for the sans typeface Clown. The font family comprises 18 various styles that precisely fit together. Millie is a stressed, geometric script who spends her days as industrial lettering and her nights paired with blackletter on the patches of motorcycle gangs. Millie was weighted by the conventions of broad nib calligraphy, inspired by the Milwaukee Tools logo, and finds herself best used in logos and titles. She was designed to be used on about a 20 degree angle, though she looks just fine on a level plane. By using opentype, many ligatures, and two sets of stylistic alternates, Millie was developed to look great with any string of letters. Access the first stylistic set for a disconnected script look, and the second set for even more connections and fluid script than standard. Millie Round takes the edge off a bit, giving the entire set a more approachable and versatile feel.

Florian Fecher’s Lektorat font family is one for the books, and for the screens, and for the magazines. While an editorial’s main goals are to entertain, inform, and persuade, more should be considered. For example, clear divisions are necessary, not just from one article to the next, but in how each is positioned as op-ed or fact-based, infographic or table, vilifying or uplifting. From masthead to colophon, Lektorat has six concise text styles and 21 display styles to captivate, educate, and motivate within any editorial purpose. Magazines and related publications are notoriously difficult to brand and then to format accordingly. The research behind Lektorat focused on expression versus communication and what it takes for a great typeface to accomplish both tasks. In the changeover from the 19th to 20th century, German type foundry Schelter & Giesecke published several grotesque families that would become Lektorat’s partial inspiration. Experimentation with concepts from different exemplars gave birth to Lektorat’s manifest character traits: raised shoulders, deep incisions within highly contrasted junctions, and asymmetrical counters in a sans family. After thoroughly analysing magazine publishing and editorial designs, Florian discovered that a concise setup is sufficient for general paragraph text. So Lektorat’s text offering is concentrated into six total styles: regular, semibold, and bold with their obliques. Stylistic sets are equally minimal; an alternate ‘k, K’ and tail-less ‘a’ appear in text only. No fluff, no wasted “good intentions”, just a laser-like suite to focus the reader on the words. The display styles were another matter. They aim to attract attention in banners, as oversized type filling small spaces, photo knockouts, and in subsidiary headings like decks, callouts, sections, and more. For these reasons, three dialed-in widths — Narrow, Condensed, and Compressed — complete the display offerings in seven upright weights each, flaunting 21 headlining fonts in total. I recently came across an old travel journal I’d misplaced, and in it was a really rough sketch of an Italian post office. The sign lettering caught my eye while flipping through the pages, and while not my forte, I thought I’d take my stab at recreating sans-serif lettering as a font. The Postale family recaptures that old post signage and the vintage flair that appeals to me. A little reminiscing is always a good thing. You’ll find the Stylistic Alternates feature changes up the retro styled letters to a more modern sans serif styling for a handful of letterforms, if the vintage style of certain letters isn’t your cup of tea.

RensGazet is a decorative blackletter typeface with elaborate upper-case letters and condensed lower-case characters. It was inspired by the masthead of a short-lived weekly newspaper, The Rensselaer Gazette, which was published from 1857 until 1860. I could not find any existing digitized fonts that replicated this old typeface, so I decided to create an interpretation of it. I had samples of few letters in large point sizes and a number of others at a small point size, though these were blurry and not sharply defined. As a result, this typeface is undoubtedly considerably different from the original. Also, my spacing is much tighter than that in the source samples.

Joy Redick designed Blackoak, a big and heavy Egyptienne-sytle titling slab serif face, in 1990. The extremely robust style of the characters in this typeface was consciously distorted; creating letterforms that appear flattened and stretched, like a rubber band. Blackoak is drawn in the style of old wood tpes, just like those that one envisions when one thinks of the large, decorative posters that once filled Wild West America. The wood type collection of the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC acted as a primary source of inspiration for this design. True to its rooks, Blackoak is meant for use exclusively in headlines in very large point sizes, or for logos and other corporate advertising purposes.
