In 1929 Chauncey Griffith at Mergenthaler commissioned W.A. Dwiggins to design a warmer and less mechanical Geometric Sanserif to compete with Futura. Dwiggins’ best efforts proved that human warmth had little to do with cool geometry; for twelve years, until the introduction of Spartan, Mergenthaler lost ground to Intertype’s licensed version of Futura.

Each new generation of students learns to write the basic forms of the letters a little differently than their predecessors. The role model is also changing. The cursive handwriting taught in school is getting closer and closer to printed type. The children no longer learn the forms of cursive handwriting required for connected writing, but first the “block letters”, only later should they develop their own individual handwriting from this, which many of them no longer do. And the writing tool is also changing. Of course, script looks different when children no longer learn to write on paper with a fountain pen, but on a tablet computer with the “pencil”. The writing experience is completely different, and the “material properties” are different too. There is practically no writing resistance that would make it difficult to move against the direction of writing. "Die Lara" was created based on the template by Lara Mörwald from the winter of 2023. The font version "Black" corresponds to the handwritten original, all thinner variants up to the wafer-thin "Hairline" are derived from it. In the variable font, the intermediate forms can be selected steplessly. In order to preserve the handwritten character of the font, "Die Lara" contains several alternates to most letters and numerals, so that different character forms alternate in the typeface. If the "ligatures" function is activated in the app (which is the default in most programs), these alternates appear automatically as you type. There is also an alternative "swashed" variant of some letters. So you can set somewhat livelier accents at the beginning or end of a word. "Die Lara" also contains fractions and tabular figures.

This all started with a love for Minister. This is a font designed by Carl Albert Fahrenwaldt in 1929. In the specimen booklet there’s a scan from Linotype’s page many years ago. They no longer carry the font. I’ve gone quite a ways from the original. It was dark and a bit heavy. But I loved the look and the readability. This came to a head when I started my first book on all-digital printing written from 1994-1995, and published early in 1996. I needed fonts to show the typography I was talking about. At that point oldstyle figures, true small caps, and discretionary ligatures were rare. More than that text fonts for book design had lining OR oldstyle figures, lowercase OR small caps—never both. So, I designed the Diaconia family (using the Greek word for minister). It was fairly rough. I knew very little. I later redesigned and updated Diaconia into Bergsland Pro —released in 2004. It was still rough (though I impressed myself). In 2006, I found myself needing a readable sans serif. So I went to Bergsland Pro, and eliminated the serifs. I named the font Brinar. I kept a flare in place for the serifs and cupped the ends. I was stunned. People loved it. It’s remained my bestseller until very recently. So, at the end of 2016 I decided that Brinar really needed some help. The flares were basically random. The stem width and modulation variances all needed to be fixed. My old OpenType feature code was quite limited and clumsy. So, I created the 6-font Biblia family. I cleaned up or redesigned all the glyphs. I updated the fonts to the 2017 set of features: small caps, small cap figures, oldstyle figures, fractions, lining figures, ligatures and discretionary ligatures. These are fonts designed for book production and work well for text or heads.

A set of rounded Art Deco initials set inside circular borders was found amongst the pages of the vintage French lettering book "Modèles de Lettres Modernes par Georges Léculier”. Now made into a digital font called Deco Spot Initials JNL, these classic letter forms are available in both the original white-on-black version and as a black-on-white alternate design.

Clairvaux is a part of the 1990 program Type before Gutenberg, which included the work of twelve contemporary font designers and represented styles from across the ages. Linotype offers a package including all these fonts on its web page, www.fonts.de. Herbert Maring developed his Clairvaux based on early Gothic typefaces. Its clever design resulted in highly stylized yet legible characters.

This is a font as sharp as a swordfish… This series is composed and includes ten fonts with 630 glyphs each, with true italics, true Sloping and supports of course: Latin, Greek & Cyrillic.

One of the text fonts showcased within the pages of the John Ryan Foundry (Baltimore, MD) specimen book from 1894 is a squared type face with rounded corners called “Geometric”. The original design has been updated slightly by substituting straight lines for the inner corner curves to add a small contemporary touch to a classic alphabet from the 19th century. Business Letter JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Candy Bits was originally designed at Bitstream as a custom project for a large printer manufacturer. Released in 1997, Candy Bits was designed by Jim Lyles. The typographic characters were fashioned after a well known American candy. The balance of the characters in the font are designed to enhance the 3D illusion by appearing to recede into the page. Soon after its completion, Mr. Lyles joined a local health club.

The 1914 sign lettering instruction book “Art Alphabets and Lettering” by J. M. Bergling showcased many hand lettered alphabets as an inspiration to both up-and-coming and established sign painters. One page in particular featured a classic free-form Art Nouveau style with rounded shapes. This style of lettering was emulated in the 1960s by designers of rock concert posters, so the style is reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period as well as the 1960s. Old Time Nouveau JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The Teapot Dome scandal was a 1920s bribery scandal involving Secretary of the Interior Albert Bacon Fall. Fall leased Navy petroleum reserves at Teapot Dome in Wyoming [along with some California reserves] at low rates with no competitive bidding. The San Francisco Examiner for Feb. 20, 1924 ran the two line headline “U.S. Senator Named as Oil Stock Speculator; Whitney to Face Quiz Today on Slush Fund”. The headline was set in a condensed, slightly squared sans serif typeface. This is now available as Special Edition JNL in both regular and oblique versions.

Foundry Wilson is a lovingly drawn revival of a 1760 font from Scottish type founder Alexander Wilson, a learned and cultured man who crafted his types with care and skill. Many of Wilson’s fonts were produced exclusively for the Foulis brothers' classics published by Glasgow University Press. Jacob Riley is based on antique 18th century printers’ specimens and has been hand-illustrated with calligraphy nibs dipped in walnut ink. A goodly fellow, Jacob delights in uses varied and sundry including personal correspondence, rustic decor, graphic display and even amongst the pages of children’s books.

Marita combines sternness with swing and, from this, develops its own, unique elegance. This makes Marita quite versatile, also and especially for headline settings. Apart from numerous ligatures, the font also includes old style figures. Marita is based on brush writing with drop-shaped serifs. Fonts based on handwritten forms enjoyed a revival in popularity in the 1930s. Diskus was designed by Martin Wilke in 1938 and exhibits many traits of modern script and brush typefaces. The informal and energetic Diskus is a script and brush font for daily use and the capitals can be used as initials mixed with other fonts. Diskus is particularly good for titles or texts in middle to larger point sizes.

The addition of serifs to an existing typeface can drastically change the look and feel of a design. Sign Card JNL and its oblique version is just such a treatment of Sign Shop JNL. By adding the serifs, there is not only a brand-new Art Deco typeface possessing a regal and formal style, but a distant resemblance to a Russian Cyrillic font with its mechanical form and function.

A page from an 1880s type specimen book presented a unique "Barnum"-like design with top horizontal lines much thinner than the bottom ones. Titled "Ten Line Antique Compressed No. 7", the design transcends the years; for it's not only an antique wood type font, but is also reminiscent of the 1960s hippie counterculture movement. The Mule is a very special mix – it has a donkey father and horse mother, and they often inherit the best qualities of both. "The mule is an example of hybrid vigor, Charles Darwin wrote: The mule always appears to me a most surprising animal. That a hybrid should possess more reason, memory, obstinacy, social affection, powers of muscular endurance, and length of life, than either of its parents, seems to indicate that art has here outdone nature." They are typically very strong for their size compared to horses and are able to cope with bad weather better than donkeys. Mules rarely become ill and their behavior is Intelligent and sensitive. In the right home, they can make great companions for other equines, and wonderful pets. However, if they are unhandled or not correctly trained, mules have the potential to be dangerous. The inner shapes of Mule Cargo are almost identical between the Regular and the Heavy weight. This shared genom make them very powerful pair and a useful design tool for display purposes.

Tactical is nothing more than a testosterone-laced typeface. Rigid, mechanical and unforgiving. Originally conceived in 2007 while I was working through the early sketches of Ginza, Tactical features hard 45-degree angles and the presence of a curve for curve’s sake is just not there. Complimenting the original is a Stencil variant (inspired by the military, marathon video game, explosion-influenced name) and matching Obliques—altogether creating a sharply coordinating family.

Madelican is a beautiful combination of modern and classical calligraphy, inspired by the handwriting of Italian women and ancient manuscripts. I think calligraphy has an advantage for the alternate characters, Madelican has tons of possibilities for just one letter. My exploration of this fonts was not as easy as in my imagination, it took several trial and errors for the perfect balance of the style. Madelican is very suitable for weddings, book covers, greeting cards, logos, branding, business cards and certificates, even for any design work that requires a classic, formal or luxurious touch. Almost all letters have more alternate than others, it is fine because the limitations of the shape of the letters. It must be readable and legible. Every letter that I've chose are only the best on it and fit with the character style. Multi-lingual support and up to 16 stylistic alternates. Monocto is an upright italic, clearly evidenced by the lowercase letters a, e, f, g, i, k, l, v, w, x, y and several capitals. On one hand, the design is inspired by an historical German running hand written with a pen angle of 45°, and on the other, by rational, utilitarian monospace types, similar to those designed for the mechanical typewriter during the Industrial Revolution. As the writing tool touches the paper, a double-square with broken corners is produced, which then, according to ductus, transforms itself into letter components that are either 90°-verticals or 45°-diagonals. The systematic geometry of Monocto offers unexpected design possibilites.
