The cover title for the July, 1935 issue of Harper’s Bazaar magazine was hand lettered in a condensed, squared slab serif design with a few stylized characters. This is now available as Stylish Title JNL, in both regular and oblique versions. For many years, each issue of the magazine had its title rendered in different type styles; offering many unique variations to coincide with that month’s cover art.

»Supra-condensed« – designed by Gert Wiescher in 2013 – is the condensed version to this new sans typeface family of eight weights with matching italics. The condensed version is designed for space-saving typography but with high legibility in mind. The light and normal weights and the dominant x-height with its high ascenders make for easy reading of long copy. The heavy and x-light weights are great for elegant headlines. Supra is an OpenType family.

Spotted for sale online, a partial set of antique tin stencils from France had a distinctively handmade look about them. Many of the characters were inconsistently wider than others, some characters were missing and one was damaged. Despite the obvious flaws, the image of these stencils served as the model for a digital font revival once the characters took on a more uniform appearance. French Stencil Serif JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

A meeting of Byzantine and Art Deco forms, Aphasia began as a series of handwritten captions to accompany drawings in the early 1990s. The drawings were abandoned to allow the lettering to become the real composition. Playfully set in blocks of verse with each line shaped through free-association, the only visual rule was that all the lines of capitals be of equal length. The challenge of the game required extensive abbreviations, ligatures, small caps, and superiors. With the advent of Letraset’s FontStudio program, the project moved into the typographic realm.

Frederic Goudy joined Lanston as art advisor in 1920. One of his first initiatives was to design a new version of Garamond based on original Garamond designs of 1540. Goudy intended his free-hand drawings to be cut exactly as he had drawn them and fought with the workmen at Lanston to keep them from “correcting” his work. This new type was called Garamont (an acceptable alternate spelling) to distinguish it from other Garamonds on the market. (The other Garamonds on the market at that time were later confirmed to be the work of Jean Jannon.) In 2001, Jim Rimmer digitized Garamont in two weights. The display weight is based on the actual metal outlines to compensate slightly for the ink gain that occurs with letterpress printing. The text weight is a touch heavier and more appropriate for general offset and digital text work. Digital Garamont is available to the public for the first time in 2005.

Scan is literally a barcode font, made of actual barcodes, shaped in De Stijl style. It is a monospace, all-caps font with two different barcodes per letter. These offer the user a choice of a heavier look with the upper case and a lighter look with the lower case. Numbers and letters each have their own distinct barcodes. When Ray Larabie donated some font work files to the Stella Roberts font project, he suggested that whenever possible the design get reworked to reflect some update and change. Jeff Levine overhauled the original design and made numerous changes to end up with Seminar SRF and its oblique version. A friendly, clean sanserif with a nod to the classic Optima, this text face can easily fit into word copy or hold its own in headlines. WEG* font is an experimental type system where legibility isn’t the focus. This project studies how glyphs are constructed and how their ductus can be modified. I explored how far I can move the limits if I don’t worry about the legibility. In Weg, letters are built by a single line that connects them, along with words and paragraphs. When weight decreases, the legibility of the signs increases. This is the first stage. It’s a project in expansion. The set contains uppercase, lining figures and basic punctuation in three weights: Regular, Light and Thin. The current supported languages are Spanish, Guaraní and English. If you need any other language, please let me know. I would like to expand the character set. Second stage project WEG is an experimental in-expansion font family. Here I present to you the second stage. I’m planning the first upgrade for middle 2021. I’m preparing a pattern set for July 2021. Here you can see the first four patterns. The objective of this font was to try and find out how far back in the designer's life this obsession with letters began. The challenge was to draw, from memory only, two sets of caps that recall older Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies lettering. The experiment was a success, which means that the designer's got it bad since he was, like, four!
