Opinion varies regarding the role of Claude Garamond (ca. 1480–1561) in the development of the Old Face font, Garamond. What is accepted is the influence this font had on other typeface developments from the time of its creation to the present. Garamond, or Garamont, is related to the alphabet of Claude Garamond (1480–1561) as well as to the work of Jean Jannon (1580–1635 or 1658), much of which was attributed to Garamond. In comparison to the earlier Italian font forms, Garamond has finer serifs and a generally more elegant image. The Garamond of Jean Jannon was introduced at the Paris World’s Fair in 1900 as “Original Garamond”, whereafter many font foundries began to cast similar types. Bramante™ is an original display font by LetterPerfect Fonts, designed by Garrett Boge in 2020. It is modeled after a fifteenth-century inscription in the church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome. The name is a tribute to the pre-eminent Renaissance architect Donato Bramante, whose Tempietto (1502, San Pietro in Montorio) marked the beginning of the High Renaissance in Rome. In 1503 he was named lead architect for the new St. Peter's Basilica, which was completed by Michelangelo, Maderno and Bernini a century later. Unzial typefaces consist of letter forms of the Capitalis Monumentalis and the majescule cursive. The origins of Unizial faces date back to the 5th century. The Neue Hammer Unziale was developed from the Hammer typeface, which was designed by Victor Hammer in 1921, cut by A. Schuricht and appeared with the font foundry Klingspor in 1923. Australian designer and art director Wayne Thompson has loved typography “ever since I received a battered second-hand Letraset catalog at the age of 10.” He based ITC Django on the handwriting of an acquaintance -- “a fellow I know who writes and illustrates children's books and is also a commercial artist” -- who called himself Django, after the jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt. “I felt that that name Django suited the funky, lively feel of the face,” says Thompson. But he adds, “Django has a split personality: it appears loose and easy at first, but after looking at it for some time I felt an edginess come through that was slightly psychotic.” The looseness of the lowercase contrasts with the spikiness of the capitals. The “edginess” is especially apparent in words in all caps.

This delicate condensed typeface evokes a distant 1930s style with its pointed and sloping capital letters. The splayed capital M gives the design a very a definite retro flavor. But deco quickly becomes modern day with the use of slab serifs. The thick body of Kingsbury Condensed is neatly anchored to long thin serifs giving the face an unusual and at the same time contemporary appearance. Great for book covers and large capital letter assignments where a modern revivalist look is appropriate. Kingsbury Condensed Book is also available in the OpenType Std format. Some new characters have been added to this OpenType version. Advanced features currently work in Adobe Creative Suite InDesign, Creative Suite Illustrator, and Quark XPress 7. Monotype Engravers' letters show a strong contrast between thick and thin strokes and have sharply cut serifs. In 1899, Robert Wiebking (who worked for a number of foundries in his time) designed an all-caps typeface named Engravers Roman."" Shortly thereafter, American Type Founders, Inc. (ATF) released another successful ancestor of this design in 1902, ""Engravers Bold,"" designed by Morris Fuller Benton. Engravers Bold was also released by the Barnhart Brothes & Spinder foundry. Also made available by Lanston Monotype at the beginning of the twentieth century, the Engravers faces soon became a popular choice for letter heads, advertising and stationery.

Joost Schmidt?s (1893?1948) name is undoubtedly connected with monolinear condensed letters of geometric appearance ? his unfinished draft of a stencil alphabet, constructed on grid paper in 1930, is much lesser known. These modular shapes simply consist of half circles, quarter circles and square strokes with half-round terminals. From just six original letterforms (a, b, c, d, e, g), Flavia Zimbardi completed Schmidt?s draft and extended it to a full character set for contemporary use, adding upper case letters and different figure sets including old-style. Joschmi overcomes legibility issues usually associated with this stencil style, with special attention to the design of white space. Zimbardi lends the face even more character by carefully adding round terminals in subtle spots of the alphabet, accessible through stylistic sets.

Carpenter® is a beautiful script perfectly suited for invitations and announcements. Created by James West, the design was a facsimile of the penmanship of Mr. Carpenter of R. Hoe & Co. and released by the Cleveland Type Foundry as one weight in 1882. It is now also available in SemiBold and Bold. Its x-height is very small, with unusually long ascenders and descenders. NarrowWay is a family of 18 condensed and ultra-condensed sans-serif typefaces. The family started with the ultra-condensed widths, then the condensed and regular widths (the regular is still quite condensed) were added. All widths have three weights and each weight has an italics style. These 18 styles lack a true lowercase but rather have a set of alternative characters, some based on lower-case forms, on the lower-case keys. Some alternative letters can be reached with the OpenType feature of stylistic sets. The character spacing in most of the styles is quite loose and it can be tightened with an application's character spacing if needed. These typefaces are display faces that can be useful for squeezing tall lettering into tight spaces. They are not readable at small point sizes.

Neubau is a condensed geometric display typeface, designed in 2009. The inspiration for this face came from Joost Schmidt lowercase letters developed during 1925-28 in Bauhaus Dessau. Schmidt was one of the proponents of New Typography – a movement advocating the use of only lowercase letters which were constructed strictly geometrically using only ruler and compass. Neubau Pro is the new edition of Neubau fonts. The new typeface is an upgraded version of an old fonts (2009), with careful refinements to glyph shapes, and the extension of glyph amounts which enabled support of more Latin languages as well as Greek and Cyrillic languages. Neubau Pro is released in six styles with small caps, and true italics, and contains OpenType features. This typeface can be used for editorials and print designs.

Cruickshank is a decorative typeface from the late Victorian period. The upper case includes several letters with swash strokes, extending well below the baseline, as found in the original design. Alternatives to the swash caps are provided. The lower case contains small caps of simpler design. The face was designed by William W. Jackson and released by MacKellar, Smiths and Jordan Type Foundry of Samson Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1886. MS&J was founded originally as Binny & Ronaldson in 1796 and later known as The Johnson Type Foundry. Cruickshank has a strong late Victorian flavor without the extravagance of so many fonts of the period. In its simplicity and clarity, it may be seen as a precursor to the Art Nouveau style that would develop a decade later.

The handwritten cursive by the famous Italian Casanova has inspired Petra Beiße to design a new script, the “Casanova Script Pro”, with a complement of over 1400 characters and symbols. “Casanova Script Regular” is the basic version of this font with a reduced West-Layout. “Petras Script”, the first digital script font created by the calligrapher Petra Beiße, has, for many years, met with worldwide success. Petra Beiße has resided for a long time in Wiesbaden, Germany, where she is working as a renowned calligrapher. It is rare that any of her scripts are transferred into digital format and sold worldwide as fonts. Because “Petras Script” became such a huge success, she decided to release this new design for digitization. Italian poet and author, Francesco Pastonchi was commissioned to produce a new edition of the Italian Classics but was unable to find types which satisfied his needs. He decided to embark on designing a new typeface, assisted by Professor Eduardo Cotti at the Royal School of Typography in Torino. Early printed works, manuscripts and inscriptions were carefully studied before drawings were presented to Monotype for matrix production. A process of careful refinement of the design was carried out in the Monotype Type Drawing Office before the typeface was ready for manufacture. Pastonchi is a Venetian style face with a fresh, almost exotic appearance, ideally suited to classical works such as poetry and short stories. The Pastonchi font family has beautiful character shapes that also make excellent display and advertising copy.

Preface vs. Helvetica/Futura/Gill: a different strategy of text color. Whereas the established classes of sans serif typeface achieve a dynamic balance between stroke and space by combining a diversity of letterform with an evenness of fit, Preface switches the emphasis, driving out diagonals to create a dominant harmony of curves and perpendiculars, matched with a greater variety of inter-character space shapes—the result of extra width introduced in the “f” and “t”, and by the openness that accompanies the wide tails of the “ a” and “l”, the long ear of the “r”, and the serif of the “i”. En masse, and in keeping with the present trend in typography, Preface exhibits a coarser texture than the traditional sans serif faces, but one that is nonetheless even and precise. Estragon is a vivid sans-serif text face with venetian influences, suitable especially for books. It is remarkable for: its light slant, to the right, for most of the verticals, its small sized uppercase letters making it suitable for languages where they are often used (for example German,) and its just lightly inclined true italics. For a wide language support, Estragon contains a lot of accented characters including the polish kreska. It is generously equipped with ligatures, special and alternate characters as well as various kinds of numbers: besides the standard old-style figures to be set as part of text copy there are small-cap and tabular numbers as well as a set of fraction figures. Estragon comes with two weights, uprights and true italics, each with small-caps.

Inspired on posters by the extraordinary polish artist Leszek Żebrowski, Polygraph is a highly unusual face. Packed with eccentric alternates, it is an all-caps font with four exchangeable variations for each letter. These alternates are programmed to cycle when the font is used in OpenType-savvy programs, creating a random effect on glyphs distribution. The resulting pieces are truly outstanding, with an audacious handmade twist. To achieve this, just turn on the contextual alternates feature and play – you can easily try different glyphs sequences by adding spaces before words. When you need a more well-behaved look, but still with a subtle hand-drawn flair, turn off the contextual alternates and set text in uppercase. Polygraph comes in two weights, for added flexibility. But be warned: it’s quite addictive!
