This rough-and-ready display face is based on El Greco Antique, released by the Fundición Richard Gans of Madrid in the 1930s. Distressed but not distressing, rough yet charming, ragged around the edges but curiously refined. Named after a village in Greece which is the ancestral home of the forebears of the Curtii. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

Novelty songs and their often crazy or extra-long titles were all the rage at the beginning of the 20th century. A piece of sheet music for the 1920 song "When Chu-Ching-San weds Paddy McCann" had the title hand lettered in an unusually bold form of Asian-inspired lettering. This has been recreated digitally as the type font named for the song - Chu Ching San JNL.

This book and newspaper font was designed by Francesco Simoncini in 1958. After the Second World War brought type design to a standstill, the years of reconstruction meant a reconsideration of old values in the typographical world as well as in Europe in general. Aster is the result of this movement, displaying instead of Modern Face influence, a tendency toward Transitional characteristics and giving text a light feel.

The pattern for this friendly face was found within the Keystone Type Foundry's 1884 specimen book, under the rather prosaic name of Round Gothic. Of the many lettering gurus who published chapbooks on handlettering during its heyday, one of the most prolific was H. C. Martin. This quirky poster face was offered in one of his many Idea Books, and it remains as fresh and frolicsome today, some seventy years later, as when it first appeared. Hairline fonts are very clean, shining, elegant and even luxurious. They look great in fashion magazines, in the expansive world of beauty and glory. Messner is an extra-light all-caps face, especially suitable for larger sizes. Simplicity, purity and readability of its classic forms were on the first place in the creation process. Messner was a resource for designing the Kammerlander family and their combination looks very natural.

The calligraphic ITC Regallia is, like ITC Samual, a work of Phill Grimshaw. Generous capitals contrast beautifully with reserved lower case letters whose flowing ascenders and descenders create the flow which characterizes this font. ITC Regallia is graceful and almost poetic, its capitals also suited for use as initials. ITC Regallia includes several ligatures and is best used for short and middle length texts in point sizes of 12 and larger.

This unusual display face is another in a series of works based on the work of lettering artist Samuel Welo. The sinewy curves and radiant inline decoration give this typeface a cozy, warm and inviting charm. Named after the informal radio addresses popularized by Franklin Delano Roosevelt in the 1930s. One of the text fonts showcased within the pages of the John Ryan Foundry (Baltimore, MD) specimen book from 1894 is a squared type face with rounded corners called “Geometric”. The original design has been updated slightly by substituting straight lines for the inner corner curves to add a small contemporary touch to a classic alphabet from the 19th century. Business Letter JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Garstang Engraved is the latest in Greater Albion's series of ‘wood type’ inspired fonts. Garstang Engraved is a hand-cut Roman, suggesting the late Victorian era, but the type of thing that continued in use well into the twentieth century. Suitable for headlines, subheads and short copy blocks, this decidedly Deco number is based on Willard T. Sniffin’s Hollywood, designed for American Type Founders in 1932. A few of the fussier details have been modified from the original to render a clean, streamlined and sophisticated face. This sans-serif type family of two weights plus matching italics. Influenced by the geometric-style sans serif faces that were popular during the 1920s and 30s, the fonts are based on geometric forms that have been optically corrected for better legibility. HardTimes has been hard work, designing a handmade typeface must always have the right balance between rough and smooth, specially with this Times-like face. A random scan from a late nineteenth-century German type specimen book, encountered on the internet, provided the pattern for this surprisingly contemporary face. Although all of the characters are parallel to the baseline, the unusual dimensional treatment tends to give the impression that they slant upward to the right. Both versions of this font include the complete Unicode 1252 Latin and Unicode 1250 Central European character sets.

Obelysk Grotesk was designed by the Lanston Drawing Office in the late 1980s. This face is a reconstruction of Spire (1937) drawn by Sol Hess. The skeleton of Spire Roman stands with the serifs removed. Like Spire, this font has no lower case, but does offer alternate cap styles in some of the lower case positions. Spire and Obelysk have both been used prominently in the fashion industry.

Handlettering on a 1934 WPA poster promoting skating in Central Park provided the pattern for the uppercase letters of this typeface, while the lowercase letters take their inspiration from Paul Renner’s Steile Futura. The Kairos™ family from Terrance Weinzierl is that rare form of typeface that successfully melds design distinction and ease of use. PuffiClaude by Matt Desmond is a real piece of work. Great for funky display stuff, its got some jive junk hanging around every character. This OpenType font has many goodies including extra ligatures, superiors and inferiors, unlimited fractions, and a hip little smiley face. Hey, maybe it's a portrait of Claude! There are so many funky glyphs that it even supports Central European languages. Man, that's hip! Hook up.

In his book of 100 Wood Type Alphabets, Rob Roy Kelly called this face "Teutonic". This version adds lowercase letters, missing in the original, plus a few woodcut dingbats in the brackets, bar, section and florin positions. Named for a charming town in the Texas Hill Country, founded by German settlers in the mid-1850s. Both versions of the font include 1252 Latin, 1250 CE (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

Benton Modern was first prepared as a text face by Font Bureau for the Boston Globe and the Detroit Free Press. Design and proportions were taken from Morris Fuller Benton’s turn-of-the-century Century Expanded, drawn for ATF, faithfully reviving this epoch-making magazine and news text roman. Here’s a different take on my face Jungle Fever, patterned after Neuland Black, originally designed by Rudolph Koch for Gebr. Klingspor in 1923. A “sunrise” shading pattern has been employed to add visual impact and warmth to headlines. Best used in sizes of 48 point and above. ITC Vinyl was designed by J. Keith Moore, who was born in Germany but raised in Colorado. The typeface is a hybrid of Art Nouveau, street attitude, and 1950s design and was created with pen, ink, and French curves before being converted into digital fonts with Adobe Illustrator. ITC Vinyl is a family of four display faces in outline and solid designs with corresponding sawtooth" variants for each."

Swanville developed as part of a train font that eventually became LetterTrain. The letters of Swanville are bold, have a funny “serif” on the top but not on the bottom, and when the letters have interiors, the interior has the shape of the letter. Lower-case letters are smaller versions of the upper-case letters. Because development of this face stopped long ago, it has a limited character set.

Visigoth font was created in 1988 by Arthur Baker for AlphaOmega Typography. He designed it specifically for setting the text of A Dante Bestiary published in 1989 for Ombondi Editions in New York. Highly expressive and unusual letter shapes make Visigoth unique among script faces: it has bold, pen written lines, a slight incline, and a distinct variation in stroke weights, making it ideal for advertising and other display work.

Teamhair Tower is a “rough” monowidth font based on the face used on the old Sears Tower Gaelic manual typewriter. Teamhair was first digitized in 2002 by Michael Everson and originally used the MacGaelic character set on the Macintosh platform, and ISO/IEC 8859-14 on the PC. In 2008 Doire version 3 was released in OpenType format, completely compliant with Unicode encoding and with an extended character set.

The original characters, and now-rarely-seen alternate characters, for Memphis, designed by Emil Rudolf Weiss for American Type Founders in 1930, provided the pattern for this wispy, ultralight typeface. Although intended primarily for headlines, this typeface can also be used for brief blocks of text, if set 18 pt. or larger. HU SpecialmovieKR is a retro, wide square typeface, characterized by streamlined, narrow stroke ends such as 'ㄴ,ㅅ,ㅈ'. The first consonants are designed to be large with full modules to improve readability. The grapheme 'ㅇ', which is the face of the font, is in the form of a square in harmony with straight lines and curves, expressing a solid and simple feeling overall. Designed for ParaType in 2002 by Tagir Safayev. Inspired by the letterforms of Antique No. 8 typeface and other similar fonts of the 19th century (Latin Antique, Wide Latin, Etienne Condensed, Wide Renaissance). A face of so-called Latin type has stout triangular serifs and rather unusual curls on several letters in the lower case. Nevertheless it is eminently suitable for a wide variety of settings in advertising and display typography.

The 1888 edtion of James Conner's Sons United States Type Foundry specimen book listed this little gem simply as "Antique Light". Its original, rather anemic outlines have been beefed up and its serifs have been rounded, with the result that this face will get noticed wherever it goes.
