In January of 2006, Jeff Levine fonts debuted with ten releases. Many of those first fonts were based on vintage lettering stencils, which were the "school years" catalyst for Jeff's interest in lettering and type design. Eight years later, his collection of fonts has become a giant catalog of display type ranging from Wood Type revivals to Art Nouveau, Art Deco to stencil, reinterpretations of old favorites, experimental fonts, dingbat fonts and typefaces reflecting a particular decade's styles of cultural popularity. Designs from old lettering books, type catalogs and advertising have also been fodder for many alphabets not previously available in a digital format. Along the way, many unusual lettering sources were also mined for type ideas. Vintage packaging, hand-lettered signage, sign making kits, rubber stamp type, water applied decals and at times just a singular letter example inspired many of the releases within this collection. It was a source of pride for Jeff Levine Fonts to reach 500 releases and a determined goal to grow the type library as far as possible. With this in mind, February 2014 brings forth many new releases. This one in particular, Ornery Polecat JNL, is the 800th typeface release from Jeff.

Milton Glaser’s Kitchen Typeface from the mid 1970s exemplifies the bold 3-D art deco revival genre that was a trademark of the Glaser style. This typeface resulted from his involvement in the design of the The Big Kitchen in the World Trade Center’s concourse in New York City. The new P22 Glaser Kitchen takes on the technical challenge of overlapping 3-D shadows by offering two styles. P22 Glaser Kitchen Regular is spaced out so that the shadows do not overlap the white spaces of the neighboring letters. Whereas the P22 Glaser Kitchen 3D Fill and 3D Shadow can be used layered on top of one another to achieve the tight spacing intended by Glaser. P22 Glaser Kitchen was based on original drawings and phototype proofs from the Milton Glaser Studios archives. Typographic punctuation and sorts were imagined by James Grieshaber to work with Glaser’s design, as well as diacritics to accommodate most European languages. Over the years there have been many typefaces that borrowed heavily from the Glaser designs, but these are the only official fonts approved by Milton Glaser Studio and the Estate of Milton Glaser.

In the collection of vintage and historic images available online from the Library of Congress is one of the exterior of the Town Talk Diner in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Regrettably, on May 28, 2020, the Town Talk Diner was damaged by vandalism, and subsequently destroyed by a fire that engulfed the building early on the morning of May 29th due to civil unrest following the death of George Floyd. The restaurant first opened in 1946, closed in 2011 and subsequently re-opened under new ownership in 2014 with French cuisine, then from 2016 until its demise as an American bistro. While this was not known at the time of selecting the image for a typographic model, subsequent research on the diner turned up these facts. The large vintage sign above the entrance was in big, bold Art Deco letters with rows and rows of bulbs for illuminating the name at night. Coffee and Danish JNL, modeled from the image of that sign, is available in both regular and oblique versions. Perhaps, in a way, the type design will serve as a bit of historic recognition for a popular eating spot.

Carve is an African font that was inspired by fonts such as Othello and Neuland designed in the mid-1920s. Rather than attempting to re-create these fonts in a digital form as so many others have done, I have tried to capture the “spirit” of the period and emphasize the “woodcarving” style of the font, while simultaneously giving it a contemporary feel. As a result the characters differ markedly any of the original styles and have much less of an “Art Deco” look to them. To further modernize Carve, I have included all the characters required for a full character set (lower case, as well as all punctuation, numerals, diacritics, special characters etc). The result is a thoroughly modern re-interpretation. The numbers (0 to 9) bear no relation to any originals but, I believe, are fully in keeping with the upper and lower alphabetic characters of my font. Carve comes in two styles: --Regular: contemporary, angular African style --Incised: exaggerating the chunky, hand-carved "woodcut" effect. The "in-line" effect has been hand-crafted to avoid the mechanical effect of computer-generated inline effects.

I regard Sabio as an evolutionary face. By this I mean that it merges elements of script and Roman design into one elegant whole. The design was 'evolved' somewhere between these two classic approaches. The resulting family of faces makes an excellent display family, but is also clear and legible at small sizes and can be used as a text face with a distinctive flair. Sabio is a wonderfully flexible face that can sit happily alongside artwork that owes its inspiration to any era from the Art Deco onwards. The regular form is gently and subtly oblique, and the glyphs have a slight hint of swash about them. Alternate and perpendicular forms are also offered. The regular, alternate and perpendicular forms are all in turn offered in regular, and bold weights as well as in a condensed form. All in all Sabio is a humanist face with which almost anything can be done offering flair and elegance for almost any project. Whether it's a distinctive way of setting paragraph text, or poster work that's eye catching yet flowing and clearly legible, Sabio offers the answer.

UTOPIAN is a color font family based on primary colors and pure geometric shapes, influenced by Bauhaus, DeStijl and Art Deco. Its pure shapes and basic colors are inspired by the beauty of simplicity of modular order and grid, creating a perfect environment where all these elements live in a perfect color harmony. In the other hand, DYSTOPIAN, the black and white family, represents a close sibling in appearance and structure, that carries an opposite meaning, with a darker look and feel. Hastings was inspired by my appreciation for old fashioned English murder mysteries set in the early part of the twentieth century. No one seems to capture the ambience of the roaring twenties or thirties better than the Brits. Everything from the clothing, to the cars, to the telephones, down to the smallest accessories like the pens, all seem to have been appropriated from the local museum. I'm hopeful that this typeface also embodies similar feelings with its sleek and streamlined Art Deco features. In 1932, the great American type designer, Morris Fuller Benton was busy directing the creative departments of ATF and designing type. Big on his plate during that period was the development of the Bank Gothic® family among other typefaces like Raleigh Gothic. Bank Gothic and Raleigh Gothic share some very similar design traits. The most obvious difference being the ultra condensed style of Raleigh Gothic. Although the Bank Gothic family was released with a condensed, Raleigh Gothic could have originally been planned as an ultra condensed Bank Gothic but for reasons we can only speculate, the Ultra Condensed Bank became its own design. So, If you like Bank Gothic, you may also like Raleigh Gothic. Separated at birth? Fun to speculate.

Pomarosa is a typographic family that consists of capital roman letters and twisted lower case letters set randomly. Each one of them is characterized by its multiple calibers and widths. Pomarosa was planned to accompany graphic works done with different techniques and materials such as hand made collages. The narrowness of its glyphs involve its audience with abstract imprecision. Its spirit was born between fabric snippets intervened with pencil and painting. Its three members work in group and also in words or phrases with a non-finished look. Regular Pomarosa and Standard Pomarosa have 260 glyphs each. Both of them simulate to have been done by a right-handed person that works with its left hand. Pomarosa dingbats has 26 illustrations useful for frames and textures.

I'm happy to present my Stormy Youth font. It has been drawn with a marker pen and a swift hand. Stormy Youth has intentionally overlapping letters to remind street style and give an underground look. Initially, I planned to make it as only uppercase, so feel free to use it this way. There is an intentional slyness infused in the letterforms—the extreme thick and thin lines flow effortlessly without becoming gratuitous. It’s always just enough, not too much. What makes the type series so appealing? The curves. When asked to describe the letterforms, most people unwittingly allude to the human form, using adjectives usually reserved for describing physical traits… creating all-too-familiar comparisons. Summerour has grown to accept this as unavoidable and reasonable given his acknowledgement of its influences and has provided nuances within the letterforms to accentuate that.

Working on The Lab late one night, evil comic book genius Scott Christian Sava realized there was something missing from his graphic experiment! Sans-serif typefaces compensate for their basic handicap – an absence of serifs – with a softening modulation typical of roman typefaces. Grotesques often inherit a hypertrophy of the x-height, which is very efficient, but not very beautiful. They are like dogs with fat bodies and short legs. Why do we love old Garamonds? Beside beautifully modeled details, they possess aspect-ratios of parts within characters that timelessly and beauteously parallel the anatomy of the human body. Proportions of thighs, arms or legs have their universal rules, but cannot be measured by pixels and millimeters. These sometimes produce almost unnoticeable inner tensions, perceptible only very slowly, after a period of living with the type. Serifed typefaces are open to many possibilities in this regard; when a character is mounted on its edges with serifs, what is happening in between is more freely up to the designer. In the case of grotesques, everything is visible; the shape of the letter must exist in absolute nakedness and total simplicity, and must somehow also be spirited and original.

Astrum is a very decorative script font using elegant caligraphic handwritten letters that are all mutually interconnected, creating a unique look & feel of a personalized human handwritting. Its clean and prefined lines makes Astrum very appealing and modern, although being very classical in its core essence. The idea for the creation of this font had originally came up from the need to create a beautiful design for Weddings, wedding occasions, etc., but none of the existing fonts were satisfactory - so I decided to create a new and unique typeface to fill this need. Letters and other characters are recognizeable by prefined ornaments, incorporated in a very subtle way. Whitespace between capital letters, lower-case letters, numbers and other characters are done in a way to minimize the need for kerning. State Machine is a display typeface inspired by lettering applied to American and Russian Cold War-era military vehicles. It also features an alternate character set inspired by 1970s hand-made political banners. The name State Machine is a term found in both political theory and computer programming. The theoretical definition describes the political and bureaucratic organisation of a state as well as the repressive state apparatuses such as the military and police. Max Weber describes the state as "a human community that (successfully) claims the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory". In computer programming, a state machine is a mathematical model of computation used to design computer programs. It is conceived as an abstract machine that is in one of a finite number of states. It can change from one state to another when initiated by a triggering event or condition. Taken at a wider conceptual level, when these two definition are combined the meaning becomes analogous to a tool (such as a philosophical idea) with which to transform a society.

Parabrite arrives as a vision of the future. The future is brite - Parabrite - this is unavoidable now. The composition of Parabrite is found to be based on a set of technical behaviors defined from a set of four sub-glyphs and their interactions, similar to the make up of our D.N.A. (A,C,G,T). Likewise, Parabrite's block matrix is composed of four units (S,L,I,C). These units are only allowed to group together according to predefined set of mathematical rules, and affect each other symbiotically. The smallcase letters stand five feathers high, while the capitals add an extra two feathers width. Parabrite is extended, containing the full West European diacritics & a full set of ligatures, making it suitable for multilingual environments & publications. Since Parabrite is adapted to be quickly read by a wide assortment of electronic scanners, legibility to humans suffers a little, although robots report it is much easier on the eyes. Although better known for his residential buildings, Richard Neutra’s commercial projects nevertheless resonate the same holistic ecology—unity with the surrounding landscape and uncompromising functionalism. His attention to detail even extended to the selection of signage for his buildings. It is no wonder that Neutra specified lettering that was open and unobtrusive, the same characteristics which typified his progressive architecture. Relato has a low contrast and “a muscular” structure that makes it useful for setting longer text. In display sizes it has a variety of details that lends it a unique and personal expression. The formal principle of the serif, the variety of terminal strokes and the combination of curves and semi-straight lines gives the Relato a more “human” flavor. The inspiration for the design comes from different traditional calligraphic styles. The upper case letter, for example, is based on roman capitals from the Rennaissance, whereas the lower case relates to humanist handwriting. Even so, Relato is a decidedly contemporary typeface, proposing individual ideas on the design of type. The italic has a distinct typographic color thanks to the construction principle of broken lines. The bold weights have an increased contrast in the union of the strokes which helps improve legibility in small sizes and reinforce their personality in display sizes. It's a very happy day when we stumble upon beautiful alphabets that were never digitized. It is even a happier day when the beautiful alphabet finds its way to us through friends and people who like our work. Some two months ago, the forms of this gorgeous font were pointed to us by a friend who saw it in an old Dover Publications specimen book showcasing historical alphabets. It was there under the name Vanessa, with nothing else to go by. We looked and researched for further information but found nothing else. So this gem comes to you like a coal that winked its way out of the ashes because it wanted to shine again. Flirt is very authentic art deco with a noticeable element of artistic pride, swashy delicate majuscules and very aristocratic, fashionable and flirty minuscules. The majuscules can be used as every other capitals usually are, or as initial caps. The minuscules can very nicely stand on their own quite independently from the caps whenever desired. These letters are quite similar to the hand lettering used on of the kind of theater posters, specifically burlesque and opera entertainment, which are now considered very retro-chic and fashionable to see hanging on walls in home or office. The initial specimen we worked from showed a single basic art deco alphabet with numerals which seemed as they belonged to another font. That alphabet became the base Flirt font, the numerals were redrawn to fit much better with the minuscules, and the character set was greatly expanded to include punctuation, accented characters, and many many alternates, especially for the majuscules. Majuscules with a descending right vertical stroke were a common artistic touch in the high days of theater posters, so we thought they would be great additions to the character set. These alternates can be found all over the font. So to maximize the design fun, have a character map or glyphs palette handy when you use Flirt. After the base font was finished, we thought it would be a good idea to give it a bold treatment unlike anything seen out there, and the farthest thing from the mechanical bolds seen everywhere now. This bolding treatment consisted of thickening the lowercase's vertical strokes inwards, but leaving the horizontal stroke weight as is, and thickening only the thicker vertical strokes of the uppercase. The result is quite the visual feat. We encourage you to test both the regular and bold weights and see for yourself.

Roundabout is a typeface that is extracted from an ellipse shape. Each and every character started at the same geometrical figure. By cutting it up in sections, twist and rotate the separate characters could be build. The ellipse provides this typeface with evident and smooth looking features. The name Roundabout is misleading, an ellipse is not round. But the word Roundabout has a nice ring to it and it seems to fit this typeface perfectly. The Roundabout as we know it is a place where the traffic circles. Sometimes in the greater metropoles it jams like clotting veins. Various exits are presented for those who know which way to go, for those who don’t it seems an eternal treadmill. Unlike my typeface, that seems rather careless, light weighted and knows her way around. A roundabout in a child’s mind is a playful carrousel or a merry go round. Merry go round has the sweetest sound and a match is found. My Roundabout is a joyful, optimistic and open typeface, which can be used over and over and over again for many or any purposes. ----- Roundabout ist eine Schrift die aus der Form einer Ellipse entstand. So teilen alle einzelnen Zeichen denselben geometrischen Ursprung. Durch das zerteilen, verdrehen und verflechten der elliptischen Grundform konnten die separaten Zeichen so geformt werden, dass sie einen klaren und weichen Charakter erhielten. Der Name Roundabout scheint auf den ersten Blick etwas irreleitend - ist eine Ellipse ja nicht wirklich rund. Er hat aber einen schönen Klang und doch eine tiefe Verbindung zu dieser Schrift. In unseren Gedanken ist Roundabout ein Kreisverkehr: Manchmal, in großen Städten, kann er blockieren, so wie eine verstopfte Ader. Verschiedenste Auswege zeigen sich denen, die ihr Ziel kennen; für alle anderen erscheint dieser Ort wie eine endlose Schlaufe. Dieses Bild widerspricht dem Auftreten meiner Schrift, welche eher sorglos und leichtfüßig ist; sie kennt ihren Weg. In dem Kopf eines Kindes jedoch ist ein Roundabout ein verspieltes Karussell, ein „merry go round“. ,,Merry go round“ klingt bezaubernd und so fiel die Entscheidung. Meine Roundabout ist eine fröhliche, optimistische und offene Schrift, die immer und immer wieder genutzt werden kann, zu jedem erdenklichen Zweck.
