Progeny is a single-stroke freehand informal script that began life as a logo for a fast food company. That logo was rejected but when I added a suite of swash caps and a few extra ligatures and my trademark underlines it all started to come together as a font. Then I used it successfully for another logo and I proceeded to complete the weight variations that emerged during the first logo design, rounding the lighter weights to give a more friendly, softer look. That treatment didn't suit the bold weight but sharp corners did not detract from the robust, legible headliner that emerged. All weights work in all-lowercase, all-capitals, lowers with swash or regular initial caps and surprisingly – in all-caps with swash initials.

Ezekiel Script is the font become flesh—mythic gesture imposed upon forms of mechanical medium. Typography has changed the internet; our phasing mimetic desires tend toward posture rather than rationale, and the face is a concept that explores that concept. Obviously some reading of McLuhan has infliunced this concept of analysis. The script has ample diacritic extensions, as well as an alternative for the ampersand (characteristic of MYSTERIAN type) and the eszette: an upper and lower case. The upper and lower case alphabets are diverse in that the majuscules do not have linking strokes while the miniscules do. Blue Sugar is a grunge font which has one letter-shape in white set within a different grunge letter-shape in black. The Regular and Dirty versions have their characters in conventionally upright positions; and there are 3 varieties with the characters in various states of disorder and at slightly varied angles and sizes - called Twirled and Whirled. The Mixed Caps version introduces no new characters, but combines straight capitals and jumbled capitals in the same font, for convenience, in which Upper Case A-Z displays conventional upright Capitals, and lower case a-z displays jumbled Capitals. Germany has a strong heritage of industrial typefaces. These fonts seem like being constructed by engineers. The shapes seem to be built with circles and squares. DIN Mittelschrift is one very famous example, or the font on the old German car number plates. Since the Romain du Roi we know that it is tricky to draw a geometrical typeface. For optical reasons you have to go away from circles and lines with exactly one weight. Therefore the aim is not to construct a typeface but to draw it the way it seems constructed finally. Black Pearl is a revival of an ornate calligraphic font possibly created between 1850 and 1870. I spent two years looking for all the letters of this font; once I found them all, I immediately went to work on recreating this old classic. I was not able to find any numbers for the font, so new to this style are numbers, some punctuation and currency symbols. The Truetype and OpenType formats include an extended character set with Central and Eastern European accented letters. Extra characters in this font are left and right pointing hands in place of the less than and greater than keys; a ship’s wheel, located on the asterisk key; and a boat anchor on the bracket keys.

In May of this year, I went to Japan with my (then 11 year old) son Sam. It was his dream to visit Japan, probably because of my tall tales, stemming from the time I was a tour guide! Sam really wanted to try all kinds of Japanese delicacies and one day, when walking around Tokyo, we came across a little stall selling Taiyaki. Taiyaki are fish-shaped waffle/cakes with a red bean or sweet potato filling. They are really delicious! This nice ‘oriental looking’ font was made with a broken popsicle stick and Chinese ink. You are now wondering why I always use Chinese ink and not Japanese ink. Well, I have a stash of the Chinese stuff and it’ll last me a lifetime!

The other day, I was thinking how time flies and how my kids grow up so fast. In the blink of an eye, they had turned from babies into almost-teenagers. They're not teenagers yet, but given their tantrums, it does feel like I have three teenagers in the house... ;-) Ogenblik, in Dutch, means: ‘in the blink of an eye’, ‘lightning fast’, or ‘for a brief moment’. It’s similar to the German ‘Augenblick’, which means exactly the same. Ogenblik was made with the same dried out marker pen that helped me create my font Castlerigg. I guess it had more than one extra font in it! Ogenblik is a bit of a grungy, yet quite legible and neat font. Comes with multilingual support.

Farmer's Marker is an ode to the hobby-farmer and their honest and hardworking (but not too serious) lifestyle. The font reflects a vision of a farmer who quickly scrawls down her produce (72 Eggs + 20L of Milk + 2kg Honey) before she heads off to the market to do her best to sell what she has farmed. This antique-aged version of Monkton can be used to imitate old letterpress printed documents such as old English text. The rough edges resemble ink spread on paper to give an old look. The inspiration for this typeface family came from my childhood experiences at Monkton, amidst an historic part of the South West of England. Studies of the original incised capitals of the Trajan column in Rome were analysed and polished for this modern version. The lower case letterforms and numerals were then created in sympathy, taking their proportions from the incised letters of local gravestones. Its name honours not only the area where the original alphabet was conceived and drawn, but also the people responsible for fostering my initial interest in letters.

Manhattan was designed in 1970 for ITC by Tom Carnase, who also created Avant Garde Gothic. The distinguishing characteristic of this designer's work is found in the emphasis on the thick-thin constrast. In this case, Carnase approached the border of the impossible. The heavy vertical strokes stand opposite the finest of lines and the thick columns dominate the overall look. The basic forms are strictly constructed, as are those of Morris F. Benton's Broadway of 1925, to which many parallels can be found. Manhattan is best used for applications which will not be placed too far from the viewer, as at too great a distance the fine lines can no longer be seen. It should be used exclusively for headlines in medium point sizes.

SomaSkript is a natural extension to the basic Somatype font design, adding more variety to the family, all of which have similar features. Basically, by widening the uprights and maintaining the thin cross-bars it takes on more of a script-like quality, hence the name. Slanting the letters reinforces the script illusion and consequently brings a broader application to the font’s original format. When designing the Somatype alphabet originally, I always envisaged maximizing on its potential by creating an incised version. This variation not only emphasizes the implied script qualities within the name but brings out the softer, feminine side of the typeface. This evolutionary process creates a different looking font altogether and in turn the slanted version emphasizes the elegant quality even more so.

This font is based on the popular and timeless Caslon design and was carefully digitized from the pages of an early 19th century book. I was excited to see some unique design treatments of characters such as the lower case italic 'p', the question mark, and various swash caps that I had never seen before. During the conversion process, I made sure to preserve the worn look of faded ink on old paper by maintaining a subtle level of decay and opacity with each character. For missing characters not found in the book, I created new characters that were faithful to the style of the rest of the family. FF Bauer Grotesk is a revival of the metal type Friedrich Bauer Grotesk, released between 1933 and 1934 by the foundry Trennert & Sohn in Hamburg Altona, Germany. The geometric construction of the typeface, infused with the art déco zeitgeist of that era, is closely related to such famous German designs as Futura, Erbar, Kabel and Super Grotesk that debuted a few years earlier. However, Bauer Grotesk stands out for not being so dogmatic with the geometry, lending the design a warmer, more homogenous feeling. The oval “O” is a good example of that, as well as characteristic shapes like the capital M or the unconventionally differing endings of “c” and “s” which make for a less constructed look. One of the charming features of vintage wood type is the unusual interplay of stroke widths or letter shapes that can vary from character to character. Grandis ("chainlink") was initially intended for a first person shooter’s UI, so this guided the design. The font had to be readable while maintaining sci-fi feel and also to not rely on kerning (most video games don’t support it). This meant a large x-height, steep diagonals and squared bowls to reduce the amount of white space between letters. Tabular numbers as default facilitate UI design where timers or tables are involved. What makes the font stand out from similar grotesks is the letters’ classical proportions with wide bowls and narrow rectangles. Niccolo Niccoli (1364-1437) was a wealthy bibliophile and an acclaimed scribe, in Florence (Italy). He was one of the most important Italian calligrapher in this early time of rediscovering Roman script. Of rare accomplishment was his adaptation of the so called Italian humanistic minuscule script. We were inspired from his late work to create this present Font. We have added a lot of accented and other characters (U/V, I/J...) who was not existing in the original and replacing "long s" by a small "s" for a modern use. The OTF encoding was used for intelligent alternates, permitting to use different forms of the same lower case or capital in a single word, reproducing easily the charming variety of a real manual scripture.
