This all started with a love for Minister. This is a font designed by Carl Albert Fahrenwaldt in 1929. In the specimen booklet there’s a scan from Linotype’s page many years ago. They no longer carry the font. I’ve gone quite a ways from the original. It was dark and a bit heavy. But I loved the look and the readability. This came to a head when I started my first book on all-digital printing written from 1994-1995, and published early in 1996. I needed fonts to show the typography I was talking about. At that point oldstyle figures, true small caps, and discretionary ligatures were rare. More than that text fonts for book design had lining OR oldstyle figures, lowercase OR small caps—never both. So, I designed the Diaconia family using the Greek word for minister. It was fairly rough. I knew very little. I later redesigned and updated Diaconia into Bergsland Pro—released in 2004. It was still rough (though I impressed myself). Now, with 4-font Biblia Serif family 13 years later, I’ve cleaned up, made the fonts more consistent internally, added more functional OpenType features, and brought the fonts into the 21st century. I used the 2017 set of features: small caps, small cap figures, oldstyle figures, fractions, lining figures, ligatures and discretionary ligatures. These are fonts designed for book production and work well for text or heads. Finally, in 2021, I went over the fonts entirely and remade them in Glyphs.

Lomo, PLC is a Russian optical manufacturer, whose cameras have built up an international cult following since 1992. Swiss designer Fidel Peugeot recently tapped into this phenomenon, creating an astounding series of pixel fonts for use in a variety of applications-from websites to mobile phone displays. Now available as a single family from Linotype, Lomo's versatility extends itself across 37 various faces. "LFT Etica, the moralist type family by Leftloft, began at the end of 2000, but its development is ongoing as it expands to fill the astute designer’s needs. The starting point was the common, cold grotesque sans typefaces — ubiquitous and often badly applied in their everyday visual environment. The challenge was to obtain the same force, versatility, and colour, but with a much warmer feel. LFT Etica resides aesthetically somewhere between a grotesque and a humanist sans serif, resulting from a design of soft strokes with open counters and terminals. LFT Etica successfully combines forcefulness and delicacy, wrapping both with sober charm. Milan-based Leftloft studio teamed up with Octavio Pardo to develop 24 additional styles for the very successful LFT Etica type family. This expansion is a direct response to type users’ requests who found in LFT Etica a de facto choice for web design. Before Bodoni, there was Didot. With the publication by Francois Ambroise Didot of Paris in 1784 of his prospectus for Tasso’s La Gerusalemme Liberata, the rococo typographical style of Fournier de Jeune was replaced with a spartan, neo-classical style that John Baskerville pioneered. The typeface Didot used for this work was of Didot’s own creation and is considered by both G. Dowding and P. Meggs to be the first modern face. Three years later, Bodoni of Parma is using a very similar face. Just as Bodoni’s typeface evolved over time, so did that of the Didot family. The eldest son of Francois Ambroise Didot, Pierre, ran the printing office; and Firmin ran the typefoundry. Pierre used the flattened, wove paper, again pioneered by Baskerville, to permit a more accurate impression and allow the use of more delicate letterforms. Firmin took full advantage of the improved paper by further refining the typeface introduced by his father. The printing of Racine’s Oeuvres in 1801 (seen in our gallery image #2) shows the symbiotic results of their efforts, especially in the marked increase in the sharpness of the serifs when compared to their owns works of only six years earlier. It has been suggested that one reason Bodoni achieved greater popularity than Didot is the thinner hairlines of Didot were more fragile when cast in metal type and thus more expensive for printers to use than Bodoni. This ceased to be a problem with the advent of phototypesetting, opening the door for a renewed interest in the work of the Didot family and especially that of Firmin Didot. Although further refinements in the Didot typeface were to come (notably the lower case ‘g’ shown in 1819), we have chosen 1801 as the nominal basis for our presentation of HiH Firmin Didot. We like the thick-thin circumflex that replaced the evenly-stroked version of 1795, possible only with the flatter wove paper. We like the unusual coat-hanger cedilla. We like the organic, leaf-like tail of the ‘Q.’ We like the strange, little number ‘2’ and the wonderfully assertive ‘4.’ And we like the distinctive and delightful awkwardness of the double-v (w). Please note that we have provided alternative versions of the upper and lower case w that are slightly more conventional than the original designs. Personally, I find the moderns (often called Didones) hard on the eyes in extended blocks of text. That does not stop me from enjoying their cold, crisp clarity. They represent the Age of Reason and the power of man’s intellect, while reflecting also its limitations. In the title pages set by Bodoni, Bulmer and Didot, I see the spare beauty of a winter landscape. That appeals to a New Englander like myself. Another aspect that appeals to me is setting a page in HiH Firmin Didot and watching people try to figure out what typeface it is. It looks a lot like Bodoni, but it isn't!

Qwatick is a decorative serifed family with three weights, each with an italic style. It is squarish and has small serifs. The bold style has high contrast and the regular style remains readable even at small point sizes. The family originated as a reworking of the odd display font Quidic, moving it toward normality and greater legibility.

I really like peanuts! My family and I often eat an Indonesian snack called Rempeyek, which is a deep fried, battered peanut cracker and I was probably craving one when I made this font. Peanut Crunch is a hand painted display font. It comes with some alternates and a bunch of ligatures for you to play around with.

Mark van Bronkhorst's MVB Magnesium is based on his impressions of a style of lettering often seen on early 20th century hand-painted signage. With its thick-thin strokes and angled terminals, MVB Magnesium is a warmer, less common alternative whenever one might use a sans serif in all-caps. It is available in two widths.

Frosted is a font based on a naive, illustrated handwriting that can be used on a daily basis. It is a delicate, handwritten font with a somewhat masculine feel which mimics the natural stroke of pointed pen calligraphy. Paired with structured flourishes and wreaths, Frosted embodies a folksy feel that brings true character to any design.

Handmade Dropshadow JNL was modeled from lettering found on a vintage silk screened metal sign used for point-of-sale marketing. Before the advent of computers and modern techniques, silk screens were hand cut using material called frisket and knife tools, and the lettering reflected the human inconsistencies of cutting these lettering into the template surface for transfer.

Sansational is an original design by Alex Kaczun. The inspiration started with the shape of a "paper clip". Simple and elegant. A condensed sans serif that's, well... just sansational! It's a delight to use and view. Great for advertising, large headlines, web applications, and well... just about anything. Works equally well in a broad range of text point sizes.

Play a while with Horsefeathers, and you'll find yourself feeling kind of a combination of giddy and up. a lively, animated font that draws attention in short bursts yet has remarkable balance in longer text blocks, even at smallish point sizes. And that can be said for all three styles: Regular, Bold, and the aptly-named Horsefeathers Buzzsaw.

Cutlass was just for fun. Poniard is the working version. Sleek, slender, sharp, to the point! A bit of decorative fun. This is the first font used in teaching Fontographer in my new Practical Font Design Book. I thought I better release it for those who enjoyed the journey. It's just an 8-bit font for fun. Enjoy!

Somaskript Tall shares the same concept as Somatype Skwosh, namely a desire to ignore traditional rules and re-scale along one axis only. This time the starting point was Somaskript and the end result is a condensed & uniquely elegant display face, vertically extended by the process but with legibility very much intact and its personality preserved.

The City Burn, formerly called "The city burn night after night and we spray-paint the walls", was especially designed for Mad Skills Mag issue#3 Urban Flavour. It needed to be street, and urban, so I made a stencil font. It’s used by Fox5 tv for the rant TV show, the website infected.com, Fried chillies TV, and others!

Arequipa is a Latin font with serifs generally top left. The style is influenced by Aztec and Inca designs the Bold weight is excellant for Headline and the lighter weights work well in limited text. The geometric shape of the serifs, ij dots, full point, comma and cap Q give the font an unusual and distinctive look.

Hippyfreak was created by manipulating my Beatnik font. I stretched and distorted the outlines until I got an interesting effect reminiscent of the Hippie generation. It has a cool and hip rhythm and movement. Great to use for those funky headlines, or whenever a retro look is desired. Works great at all point sizes. Groovin' baby.

In Handmade Font the letters are made of hands or handprints, something children sometimes do when they are set free with paint. It is caps only but the letters on the lower-case keys differ from those on the upper-case keys. It comes with a large assortment of accented letters to support most European languages.

With an obvious nod to Art Deco, this font offers a stylish design with distinctively elongated ascenders and descenders. Includes: Western European, Central European, Baltic & Turkish sets. Due to the modular nature of this design there may be a slight lack of smoothness to the curves at very large point sizes (around 100 pt and above).

The hand lettered cast credits for the 1932 George Arliss film “The Man Who Played God” inspired Lobby Poster JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. A bold and playful Art Deco poster alphabet, its nonconformist character widths and shapes are casual enough for informal designs yet bold enough to get any point across.

Kasuga Brush is a contemporary script with eastern influence and authentic brush drawn character. The script offers two variants. One is slightly distressed along the character's edges while the other is painted with a dry brush for interesting texture. Sixty-four optional ligatures add a realistic, hand-drawn effect and ensure that no two letters in a word repeat.

Inked Bones is a hand painted blackletter typeface, created by Måns Grebäck during 2019. It works perfectly in Medieval contexts as well as in modern Gothic style typesetting. Use the typeface for a tattoo graphic or for your Middle Age project. The font supports all Latin-based European languages, contains numbers and all symbols you'll ever need.

We tried to implement graffiti that is common in our city. Everyone wants to express themselves. Whether in writing, painting on canvas or on the street, everything must be respected as art. It can be useful when you want to express graffiti art, but also consider readability. You can also work easily with three color fonts.

Corvone is a heavy bullnosed display family, inspired by the post war era's ideas of modernity. Two faces are offered, plain—a solid black face, and regular—which employs a three-dimensional pipeline effect to add real emphasis. Use Corvone to give work a retro feel, and/or where you want to really drive your point home.

Dermaks - A modern typeface with unusual shapes. The starting point were intuitively drawn glyphs that gave the impression of being cut in paper. It goes well with colors and black and white. Aventra is a handmade organic sans serif typeface family. With curved edges and slightly uneven lines, it has a warm and friendly appeal. I was listening to some old Smashing Pumpkins albums when I created this font. The name comes from a song called *** You (An Ode To No One). Runaround Kid is a hand painted typeface. I used Chinese ink and a cheap Chinese brush to create the inky look. Comes with double-letter ligatures and a whole bunch of diacritics.

The inspiration for Cuba comes from a sign for the restaurant "La Flor de Cuba" on Bergenline Avenue in Union City, New Jersey. Its blocky, dimensional forms are reminiscent of letterforms seen in signs throughout Latin America from, Colombia, to Mexico, to Spain, to Union City. Its quirky forms are meant to evoke a sense of hand painted signage.

This strong angular cousin of RM Hunky offers a bold display face. The distinctive nature of this design will be a welcome addition to any designers collection of useful fonts. Due to the nature of this design there may be a very slight lack of smoothness to the curves at extremely large point sizes (around 200 pt and above).

A 1935 song with the unusual title of "Dinner for One Please, James" had its title hand lettered on the cover of the sheet music with simple, condensed letters made by a round point dip pen. This has been reproduced in a digital font as Pen Lettering Sans JNL, and is available in both regular and oblique versions.

Linotype Reducta is a part of the Take Type Library, selected from contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. It was designed by Austrian artist Herbert O. Modelhart with only a small number of constant form elements. The cool and technical Linotype Reducta is intended exclusively for headlines in large point sizes.

A sign at the 81st Street (Museum of Natural History) New York subway stop provided the pattern for this mosaic tile face. The font features a full-tile background at the bar position (shift-backslash) and left-and-right pointing fists at the brace positions as well as complete Latin 1252 and Central European 1250 character sets.

Linotype Auferstehung is part of the Take Type Library, selected from contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. German designer Johannes Plass was influenced by historic broken letter faces, particularly Caslon Gotisch, although the rounded corners give the font a handwritten look. Linotype Auferstehung is particularly good for headlines in larger point sizes.
