I'll admit right off the bat here -- I've never been to a party in a barn. I don't even know if they still do barn dances and parties, or if that's something out of the musical Oklahoma! or something. But this font gave me kind of a homey, rustic feel, so the name felt right! Like many of my fonts, this one has been refined with crafters in mind -- smoothed curves and reduced nodes, for easy cutting and printing. It's also packed with over 600 characters total! The usual alphabet, numbers, and punctuation, plus 30 double-letter ligatures, over 300 diacritics, and a full second alphabet coded in as Stylistic Alternates. Enjoy!

Rebus Script is a fun, lively font that lets you create rebus puzzles by automatically replacing certain words or syllables with pictures. This font is an advanced OpenType font that requires an application that supports Contextual Alternates. The font was created by Terrance Weinzierl and is based on the Louisville Script handwriting font designed by Steve Matteson. Rich Dingbats & Bursts was created with graphic designers in mind. I worked for a weekly newspaper, and finding different bursts was a challenge. You either had to draw your own (and who has time for that under tight deadlines) or use the same dull bursts over and over. I wanted to give the people I worked with at the newspaper choices, and Rich Dingbats & Bursts was born. There are several uses for this font. It's great for adding graphic elements to your Photoshop artwork. In FreeHand, users can convert the burst and paste a photo inside the burst for an interesting effect. QuarkXPress users don't have to import or draw bursts, just type the appropriate character!

This font set is based on Frank Lloyd Wright's hand-lettering found on the Chicago Midway Gardens working drawings from 1913. This type of architectural lettering is a bit more casual than standard lettering found on most blueprints. A backstory with a different name Years ago, I was commissioned to take my Lust typeface and produce something unique to use for large format graphics for an event…cool. It needed to be hyper-contrast with a lot of over-the-top details. With a tight turnaround, I looked for primers within my development catalogue to help me, and settled on some early work on a typeface I had drawn called Hedonist. I used those sketches and its conventions to retrofit and build out Lust Hedonist (only to see the project go bust on the client’s end). I intended to go back shortly after the Lust Hedonist release to finalize a retail version of the OG Hedonist, but I never could settle on the look of the 'g' or the numerals, got distracted with other projects, and never picked it back up… until last year. After randomly doodling a fat, flat ‘g’ with an extremely tilted counter axis, I knew immediately how it could be used and that (re)set things in motion. Only problem was, in the process of refining the letterforms I began truly dissecting the pieces, rediscovering all of the recklessness within Hedonist, and decided on fundamentally rewriting the approach to the typeface… literally flaying it to the bone. I’m much, much happier with this finished typeface now, but the name no longer fit the moniker given to the first, adolescent approach—there’s far more audacity and cleverness in these letterforms, tenacious in their resolution now. As a result, the name Courage fit the mettle of this typeface so much more, so I kept it.

Albertina was a typeface ahead of its time. It was in the early 1960s when designer Chris Brand, an accomplished calligrapher, aspired to draw a typeface based on the principles of calligraphy. Unfortunately, typesetting machines of that era put many restrictions on designers. Characters had to be drawn within a very coarse grid, which also defined their spacing. Technological limitations meant that italic designs often had to share the same character widths as the romans. Designers were forced to draw italic faces much wider and with more open spacing than what would be typical in calligraphic lettering or hand-set type. Not surprisingly, production of the first Albertina fonts went very slowly. Brand would submit his character drawings, and the Monotype Drawing Office would modify them to be compatible with the company's typesetting equipment. The new drawings would then be sent back to Brand for approval or rework. Most were reworked. The process took so long, in fact, that by the time the face was completed it was once again out of phase with the times: instead of being released as metal type for the Monotype composing machines it had been tailored for, Albertina debuted as phototype fonts for the Monophoto typesetter. The design's first use was for a catalog of the work of Stanley Morison, exhibited at the Albertina Library in Brussels in 1966. Sales of the design were not remarkable. With the advent of digital type technology, Albertina's story took a far happier turn. Frank E. Blokland, of the Dutch Type Library, used Brand's original, uncompromised drawings as the foundation of a digital revival. The Monophoto version had taken a considerable battering from the limitations of Monotype's unit system," recalls Blokland, "but there was no need for me to incorporate these restrictions in the digital version." With the full backing of Monotype and original designer Brand looking over Blokland's shoulder, a new design for Albertina emerged, displaying all the grace and verve of Brand's original drawings. The basic family drawn by Brand also grew into three weights, each with an italic complement and a suite of small caps and old style figures."

The San Jose type family provides an array of variants representing a simplified, bay area slant on traditional Chicano American street scripts. The styles in this set can be used in all caps for the most authentic appearance or in a more typographically traditional small caps format. This font is a late work of the famous Berlin font artist Martin Wilke. Presented by Linotype AG in 1988, Wilke is a lively font with eccentric, playful forms. Wilke was influenced in part by the letters of the Irish handwriting in the Book of Kells, written in the late 8th century, while the pronounced contrast in strokes goes back to the styles of the 18th century. the font’s uniqueness is particularly emphasized when used in larger point sizes.

An extremely versatile, intelligently restrained design by Robin Nicholas for Monotype in 1980. It works very well at small sizes thanks to its large x-height, sturdy serifs, and lack of ornament; yet it is not characterless. Nimrod has been used successfully in national newspapers and books. (The Guardian, London, from its late-1980s redesign until it was replaced by a Carter interpretation of Miller in 1998; the Concise Oxford English Dictionary in the typographically unsurpassed 1990 edition.)

The source of inspiration for MFC Arkena Monogram is a specimen from the 1917 “Strong’s Book of Designs”. This popular lettering style has been incorporated into numerous film type foundries of the past, but lacked digital permanence. We’ve expanded the original All Capitals glyphset to include smallcaps to make monograms, have added numerals and included unique ornamentation for basic titling typesetting.
