Op-art never looked so good. Taking a cue from the popularity in the 1970s of deco Prismas and their related contemporary interpretations, this geometric font updates the trend. Overlap text in different colours or black and white for eye-teasing moiré combinations. Levato, the first font designed by Felix Bonge, is an Antiqua that is full of character and is refined but by no means sterile. This typeface provides for a wide range of options for creating individual designs. It was not really Felix Bonge's intention to create a whole font family when, as a second year student, he began several exercises in contrast and proportion as part of the typeface design course of Professor Veljovi? at Hamburg University of Applied Sciences. However, these initial studies developed into a project that Bonge persisted with over the following years while working towards his degree. He continually had new insights and ideas that he was able to exploit for his font. Of particular importance, he claims, was a calligraphy seminar, which prompted him to completely rework his concept. It took him several years before his extensive font Levato™ was ready. Although the forms of Levato are ultimately derived from Renaissance Antiqua, Bonge has slightly increased the relative contrast in his version. This gives the font a graceful appearance that is further emphasized by the reduced x-height and the associated prominence of the ascenders. And, in addition, the relatively fine serifs, which are almost linear at their ends, infuse Levato with a hint of classical Antiqua á la Bodoni. At the same time, Bonge cleverly compensates for the sterilising tendency of this font form. Soft and rounded serif attachments and rounded line apexes offset the severe nature of the font and provide it with an aura of vivacity. This effect is promoted by the calligraphic-like foot of the lowercase h, n and m and the not quite horizontal bars of the uppercase E and F. Overall, Bonge has succeeded in creating a refined and yet very dynamic typeface. Levato is available in five weights; Light, Regular, Medium, Bold and Black, in each case with the corresponding italic versions. Bonge treats Levato Italic as a genuine cursive typeface. Its letters are thus slightly narrower than the analogous upright letters and their forms are considerably more curvilinear. All the versions of Levato boast an enormous range of characters to meet all possible requirements. In addition to four sets of minuscule and majuscule numerals for tabular and proportional typesetting, there are also small caps, numerous ligatures, ornamental characters and even swash variants of letters. With their generous, sweeping curves, the swash variants (available as OpenType versions) can be used for striking titling effects or as initials.

In 2009, a book from 1897 in the library of the University of Wisconsin caught David Berlow’s attention. It was set in a clear text face—a predecessor of Bookman—cast by the Western Type Foundry who called it Custer. Upon noting how well the typeface worked in sizes of 6 and 7 points, Berlow developed it into a member of the Reading Edge series specifically designed for small text on screen. Custer RE was a broad and approachable typeface drawn large on the body with a tall x-height to maximize its apparent size when set very small. This was the beginning of the newly expanded series; in 2020, Berlow added new optical sizes and weights, growing the original design’s versatility up to headline sizes.

I happened to mention to the proprietor of an antique barn near here that I'd be interested in any old typewriters she happened to come across. A conversation ensued, the proprietor withdrew into a back room, and she re-emerged with an old handwritten letter, dated 18 Sept. 1825 and spanning nearly three pages. The letter, penned by Samuel Clarke, a Princeton, Mass., pastor, sought donations for the victims of an accident at sea. I thought his script unique, stylistic, and definitely something worth digitizing, so I bought the old letter and took it home. Had to come up with several uppercase characters to round out the set, but the results seem good and proper. Full release has complete character set.

In 1932, Xanti Schawinsky (1904?1979) designed an alphabet that combines two styles: a neo-classic stroke contrast paired with characteristics of stencil lettering. This mix is a child of its time and seems to reflect the Swiss and Italian biography of Schawinski. Luca Pellegrini took on the modern look and re-drew the letterforms, interrupted by subtle spaces where thick and thin strokes meet. Although Schawinsky had already designed a complete alphabet and figures in the early 1930s, Pellegrini took the character set to another level, adding currency signs, mathematical symbols and all kinds of punctuation ? anything needed to set more than just headlines. Xants is a blend of Swiss elegance and exclusiveness with Italian charm and imperfection, a combination that never gets old.

Some time ago, I found myself in a clinic with my wife: at the time she was 20 weeks pregnant and had to do an ultrasound. To pass the time, I leafed through some (ladies') magazines which were lying around. Most of them tackled big issues like which shoes to wear and what type of foundation to plaster on, but one glossy featured a photo shoot. The photographer had found an old building with a beautiful art deco tile mural and had placed his skinny model in front of it. Fortunately for me, the mural featured a lot of text in a beautiful frilly style. I re-created the font I saw and it became "Jubileum" - which just means Jubilee in Dutch.

A text face in 4 styles Before the arrival of Phototypesetting, each font size had a specific design. Le Monde Livre, designed by Jean François Porchez, along with Le Monde Journal re-establishes this practice. When Le Monde Journal was developed specifically for use at small point sizes (below 10 points.) Le Monde Livre works beautifully for book typography, magazine settings. In comparison to the italics in Le Monde Journal, Le Monde Livre’s italics are of a totally different design, closer to the models of the Renaissance. The families match well together on the same page, Le Monde Journal for small sizes settings, Le Monde Livre for large settings. The verticals metrics and proportions of Le Monde Livre are calibrated to match perfectly others Typofonderie families.

Once upon a time, in the days BC (that's Before Computers) there lived a very talented group of men and women whose job it was to render ads by hand. So skillful were these people that some say it was possible to actually identify the typefaces that the layout artists were emulating. Their renderings were swift and slick, no time for detail as it was necessary to do a whole bunch of variations, usually within ridiculous deadlines. Their only tools: bullet-tip markers and bond paper - often mistakes resulted but no time to re-do and white paint was totally unacceptable - just let the slipups be. Here's a simulation of their craft, we don't really know what typeface this was supposed to represent… any ideas?

The Swedish designer/typographer Anders Bodebeck designed the Bodebeck type family in 2002. The family, which includes five different styles, is primarily intended for use as a titling, or display face, and belongs to the neo-transitional style of typefaces. Transitional style type first appeared in England during the late 1750s, when John Baskerville released his first sets of type. Bodeck bears similarities to another, later transitional style typeface as well - Eric Gill's Perpetua (originally released by the British Monotype Corporation in 1928). Norberto, a CastleType original, is based on a Russian design from the late 19th century that in turn appears to be based on Bodoni. However, Norberto is a much warmer design than most Bodonis, with many soft touches such as very gentle curves from the serif at the top of B, D, P, and R; a jaunty cap on the ‘A’ (and Cyrillic ‘El’, ‘De’, etc); charmingly quaint numerals; hairline accents, and other subtleties that make it a wonderful addition to the Modern typefaces. Milton Glaser commented about this type family: “The typeface is called Houdini after the famous American magician. I wanted to produce a letterform that would gradually disappear as one line after another was removed.” The various versions of Houdini presented by P22 include those originally offered as phototypesetting fonts, plus a solid and an outline version—a variation of which was used for Sesame Place children’s park in 1980. These Houdini variations can all be layered on top of each other for a range of chromatic effects. Each of the Houdini fonts contains over 375 characters for full European language coverage. The family is taken to its logical conclusion with the bonus font “P22 Glaser Houdini Vanished.” This font shares the same spacing and kerning as all of the Houdini font but lacks all visible outlines. The inspiration source for Viper Monogram is the 1934 Book of American Types by American Type Founders. Found in that specimen book, was a sophisticated two-color monogram design called Hollywood Combination Initials, which was available in limited size metal castings. This wonderful monogram style is now digitally recreated, revived, and updated for modern use! Viper Monogram supports one and two letter monograms, but due to its super condensed style works best for three letter monograms. The default typing style for Viper Monogram is an all horizontal all caps setup which can be used for headlines and titling. Type in Capitals for an outline effect, lowercase for a solid effect. Varietta is the result of my fascination with photographing the type designs of some marquees in Spanish markets. In them you can see many letter designs with reversed contrast and in different widths, probably based on the possibilities of photocomposition. At the same time I was working on the expansion of the Hastile typeface designed by Alessandro Butti for the Nebiolo foundry in Italy in the late 1930s, of which I had not seen any digitization. As I am not a fan of perfect revivals, I thought it could be interesting to connect Spain and Italy in a single typeface. The first step was to expand Butti's design to 27 styles, ranging from thin condensed to black expanded. To look for the Spanish connection and its characteristic inverse contrast I took advantage of the current technology that allows variable typefaces with many axes. From this, three scenarios of horizontal contrast were incorporated (top, bottom and mixed) which allows infinite possibilities of use. The final result is a collection of 108 static typefaces or a single variable file.

OMG! I never thought I'd finish this font! Actually, the idea came to me in the late 1990-ies, but the sketches lied at the bottom of the "fonts I will complete one day In the future" pile ... also called "fonts I most likely won't complete...EVER" pile! :) Anyway, I started up with letters for both upper and lowercase, no numbers or punctuation. I figured if people ever purchased this font, all they would need were upper- or lowercase letters. But the rest of the glyphs seemed to miss out, so I made the numbers and some punctuation. But I still found the font incomplete...therefore I redid all the punctuation (from "standard" punctuation to "picturish" punctuation) and added two additional sets of letters. Meaning that there is 4 different versions of letters to choose from: 2 different lowercase, and 2 different lowercase. I had a lot of fun drawing this font, and some fun doing the detective work finding out how the MANY lettershapes should look! I hop you too have fun using this font! :)
