The Lindisfarne Gospels is an illuminated manuscript probably produced around the years 715–720 in the monastery at Lindisfarne, off the coast of Northumberland. It’s the work of a monk named Eadfrith. He was a highly trained calligrapher, and he used insular majuscule script in the manuscript. This is a deco-style text OpenType Pro font loosely based on Koch's Locarno as seen in KochAltschrift a recent free German tribute to Koch's work. I was familiar with Meek's Letraset presstype version called Locarno, but I never liked the proportions used by either Meeks or Koch. So I radically revised ascender, descender, and x-height to make them more usable and brought the shapes within my sense of design. Mine is probably closer to Meeks than Koch, but hopefully it is a tribute to both. Astaire looks much more modern and it is much more usable. I added oldstyle figures, small cap figures, small caps, several ligatures, and more. There are an italic, bold, and bold italic also in this family

Initially commissioned in the summer of 2009 for a popular North American ice cream parlor chain we cannot name, Tuba started with a reconceptualization of a somewhat flawed '72 alphabet idea by Swiss graphic designer Erwin Poell. During the back-and-forth of the custom project, other ideas seeped into the design, mostly from other Canada Type fonts, like Fab, Jonah, Jojo and Teaspoon. The end result was what the client called a "sugar circuit trigger alphabet". This now is the retail version of that project. Tuba's main style is a straight-forward mix of 60s/70s art nouveau ideas and late-70s/early-80s tube aesthetic. The Highlight and Outline styles are almost necessary spinoffs for this kind of typeface. And the all-caps Black style is a nod to the fat font fad of the past couple of years. All styles contain many alternates – so many that each style is almost two fonts in one. Make sure to check out the character sets for a few nice and useful surprises. Life's too short. This set of typefaces was produced in conjunction with the Guggenheim Museum and the Josef Albers Foundation. Josef Albers was one of the most important artists and educators of the twentieth century. He was a member of the Bauhaus first as a student and then as a teacher from 1920 until its closing in 1933. He then moved to America, where he continued making art and teaching at numerous institutions until his death. Known principally as an abstract painter, he was also an accomplished designer, draftsman, typographer, and photographer. His works explore permutations of form, color, and perception using a restricted visual vocabulary. Created when he was at the Bauhaus, his Kombinationschrift alphabets exemplify the school's ethos. Using 10 basic shapes based on the circle and the rectangle, he created a system of lettering that was meant to be efficient, easy to learn, and inexpensive to produce. These 10 shapes in combination could form any letter or number. The letterforms of this computer version were taken directly from Albers' drawings and notes.

Guinevere Pro is a typeface designed by Icelandic art director Sigurdur Armannsson. It started in 2001 as simple hand-drawn sketches of a few letters built from modules, then became an experiment with four goals: - Construct an original alphabet from a specific set of predetermined modules. - See how certain letter forms built without said modules would behave within the totality of the module-constructed alphabet. - See if certain letters would actually enforce their own shapes to be drawn a certain way within the totality of the typeface. Likewise, see if the totality of the alphabet demands that individual letters be drawn in a specific way, and if so, how much room for variation would there be? - See how all of the above reacts/changes to implementing the alphabet across different weights. The experiment was finessed and re-worked over many years of technology changes, and Guinevere Pro is the final outcome, ten years later. The Guinevere Pro set is four cross-platform Open Type fonts, with built-in small caps, alternates, ligatures, and support for a wide range of Latin-based languages.

The Mule is a very special mix – it has a donkey father and horse mother, and they often inherit the best qualities of both. "The mule is an example of hybrid vigor, Charles Darwin wrote: The mule always appears to me a most surprising animal. That a hybrid should possess more reason, memory, obstinacy, social affection, powers of muscular endurance, and length of life, than either of its parents, seems to indicate that art has here outdone nature." They are typically very strong for their size compared to horses and are able to cope with bad weather better than donkeys. Mules rarely become ill and their behavior is Intelligent and sensitive. In the right home, they can make great companions for other equines, and wonderful pets. However, if they are unhandled or not correctly trained, mules have the potential to be dangerous. The inner shapes of Mule Cargo are almost identical between the Regular and the Heavy weight. This shared genom make them very powerful pair and a useful design tool for display purposes.

Makiritare is a display font for headlines that originates from a research work on pure geometry of great simplicity from a Venezuelan ethnicity artisanal form from men called Makiritare or Yecuana. These rivers sailors and architects of the jungle live in the village of Santa Maria de Erebato on the border with Brazil. Despite having a prodigious symbolism in their art, they didn't have until recently a font that is tailored to your expression. It all started with a trip to the Amazon in 1976 with the notion of creating my thesis as a graphic design student. In 1992 I created the first letterform that was evolving to a more elaborate version being presented and selected at the International Typography Biennial Letras Latinas in 2006. Today JMTF presents Makiritare with a more complete and mature family of three weights, alternative characters, small caps, ordinals and ligatures. Makiritare fits any application that have an innovative and modernist purposes. Recommended for titles or short phrases, with striking large-scale use.

There is no doubt that the 1941 version of “The Maltese Falcon” was superior to the prior two attempts by Warner Brothers at filming Dashiell Hammett’s 1930 novel. Sam Spade was perfectly portrayed by Humphrey Bogart, and the supporting cast of Mary Astor, Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet and Elisha Cook, Jr. rounded out the main players in a great suspense film that is considered to be the first (if not one of the first) of the film noir genre. The title cards for the production and cast credits were hand-lettered in a spurred serif type style strongly reminiscent of the Art Nouveau period, so instead of naming the digital version with some “tough guy detective” moniker, it was decided that Detective Client JNL was more appropriate. After all, this is a reasonably attractive font, and in this kind of film it’s usually the “attractive damsel in distress” [be she the victim or the actual perpetrator] that gets the story rolling… Detective Client JNL is available in both regular and oblique versions.

The Ampersand Forest has its first book family! Budinger Oldstyle is elegant and approachable at the same time, with five different weights, making it a perfect choice for text or display in situations that require a hint of scholarship, fine arts, craft, erudition, and clarity. Budinger Oldstyle has the legibility of a Garalde (like those of Garamond, Manutius, et al.), with a whiff of Venetian revival (after the fashion of Schneidler & Goudy). The letters are arbitrary, with conventions like cupped serifs and leftward stress. It also has a higher x-height than might be expected, to give it an upright posture and openness in the counters. The italic is more compact, with more clearly calligraphic letterforms and conventions like Swash Caps. Its many features include OpenType alternates (a one-story a and g, and a K, R, and Q with elongated descenders), full and true small caps, both standard and discretionary ligatures, oldstyle and lining numerals, and Swash letterforms in the Italic (all capitals and descenders, plus the ascender of the d). Plus, the most adorable pudge of an ampersand you've ever seen!

I was working at Bozell Worldwide, an advertising agency, on their yearly promotional pitch. An art director was looking for a condensed informal headline treatment to be used on one of the new ad campaigns. I took several different font designs and started to condense and scale the proportions in the hopes of finding several good solutions. They finally settled on a version of Times Roman, scaled horizontally to about 50 percent proportions. I liked the look so much that I later went back to the drawing board and refined the concept by adding slanted serifs and a varying alignment on all the letter forms giving the typeface a very casual and informal appearance. At about that time, I was reading a book by Jack Kerouac, and was so inspired by his writings on the ‘beat generation’ that I decided to name the font ‘Beatnik’. Afterwards, I added a set of true small capitals and old style figures. I'm currently working on additional weights and variations to expand this ‘hip’ new font series. Groovin' baby.

The original Jessen typeface, named in reminiscence of the great supporter of the printing art at the end of the 19th century, Peter Jessen, was designed in the years of 1924 until 1930. Bible Gothic was created by the famous German designer Rudolf Koch. Ralph M. Unger digitized this font exclusively for profonts in 2005, keeping his digitization as close as possible to the original design of Koch in order to preserve the distinguished character and the partly unconventional, original forms. The concept of a Bible Gothic was developing for years in Koch's mind and drove the direction of his work, but only after the experience with his Neuland design could he start the creation of his Peter Jessen typeface. Produced quite like Neuland, Jessen, however, is much more refined and more accurate in detail than Neuland. At first glance, it seems to look plain and simple, but if you look closer, the richness of its distinguished upper case forms unfold to a perfectly clear flow of text

The first cuts of Kabel appeared in 1927, released by the German foundry Gebr. Klingspor. Like many of the typefaces that Rudolf Koch designed for printing use, Kabel is a carefully constructed and drawn. The basic forms were influenced by the Ancient Roman stone-carved letters, which consisted of just a few pure and clear geometric forms, such as circles, squares, and triangles. Koch also infused Kabel with some elements of Art Deco, making it appear quite different from other geometric modernist typefaces from the 1920s, like Futura. Linotype has two versions of Kabel in its library. Kabel has a shorter x-height, with longer ascenders and descenders, making it a bit truer to Koch's original design than the second version, ITC Kabel, which was designed by Victor Caruso. This version, also known in the United States as Cable, has a larger x-height, shorter ascenders and descenders, more weights ,and a diamond shaped i-dot. Typefaces in the same oeuvre include Avenir Next, ITC Avant Garde Gothic, Metrolite, Metromedium, Metroblack, and Erbar, just to name just a few."

Gradl Highstep is an all-cap font with a wide range of ligatures: 094=SA, 123=CH, 125=CK, 126=TS, 167=FA, 172=PA, 177=TA, 188=WA and 190=YA. In addtion, 137=Gradl’s dated monogram “MJG 1903,” 175=LLC abbreviation, 181=alternate S. This is a subtle font with thin, variable strokes. It is best used at 28 points and larger to give it the presence it needs to be be appreciated. Gradl Highstep Initials is a companion font, incorporating a deft line drawing of a fashionable woman of the period who is every bit as elegant as the underlying font.

Binario is a simple and friendly font with three weights and matching obliques. The geometric and modular characteristics of this typeface subtly reference the Art Deco and early modernist periods. The name Binario means train platform in Italian. Other aspects that informed the design of this font are modularity and efficiency. The interior rounded forms of the letters (counterforms) are based on shape of the Roman arch. Binario has a sibling, Binario Soft. This version has gently rounded stroke ends, which make a softer impression on the page.

Street Tag vol 2 is the second version of Street Tag fonts. Inspired from realistic caligraphy tagging style in many big cities. This style is more bold and readable, perfect for your “street art” designs style. I combined the real graffiti experiences into computer fonts, I think it will be different with other fonts if you can feel it, cause I draw graffiti, tagging and throw ups since I was high school. The real tagging style is never be tidy, but don’t worry, I already adjust the kerning and spacing in the best possible way. Diaria started as a project in Typeface Architecture for Master in Advanced Typograghy at EINA, Centre Universitari de Disseny i Art de Barcelona, a course tutored by Laura Meseguer and Íñigo Jerez Quintana. Later it has developed into Diaria Pro, an extensive typeface including Cyrillic script, small caps, and various OpenType features. Diaria Pro is a low-contrast serif typeface designed as a primary text face for the newspapers. Its large x-height and static exteriors allow comfortable reading in narrow columns, and calligrafic counters as well as dynamic serifs add humanist detail to overall perception and incline contrast axis without affecting interletter counterforms.
