Big Sur is a six-width slab serif font family with a unique look. At first glance, it is clearly in the tradition of old west style alphabets, with its chunky top and bottom strokes and serifs. The origin of AM Floriana is already several decades ago. At a time when there was no photo set and the choice of metal type fonts was still very manageable, Alois Menacher received an order to design a custom business logo from a flower shop. He then created a hand-drawn lettering based on the form of leaves and plants. Now Alois Menacher professionally designed and developed AM Floriana on the basis of this lettering. AM Floriana is ideally suited for packaging design, as well as for display design and logo design. AM Floriana is available as a Bold version and will soon be complemented by further cuts.

Modesto Open is now a Chromatic Font Family. Initially commissioned in the summer of 2009 for a popular North American ice cream parlor chain we cannot name, Tuba started with a reconceptualization of a somewhat flawed '72 alphabet idea by Swiss graphic designer Erwin Poell. During the back-and-forth of the custom project, other ideas seeped into the design, mostly from other Canada Type fonts, like Fab, Jonah, Jojo and Teaspoon. The end result was what the client called a "sugar circuit trigger alphabet". This now is the retail version of that project. Tuba's main style is a straight-forward mix of 60s/70s art nouveau ideas and late-70s/early-80s tube aesthetic. The Highlight and Outline styles are almost necessary spinoffs for this kind of typeface. And the all-caps Black style is a nod to the fat font fad of the past couple of years. The first cuts of Kabel appeared in 1927, released by the German foundry Gebr. Klingspor. Like many of the typefaces that Rudolf Koch designed for printing use, Kabel is a carefully constructed and drawn. The basic forms were influenced by the Ancient Roman stone-carved letters, which consisted of just a few pure and clear geometric forms, such as circles, squares, and triangles. Koch also infused Kabel with some elements of Art Deco, making it appear quite different from other geometric modernist typefaces from the 1920s, like Futura. Linotype has two versions of Kabel in its library. Kabel has a shorter x-height, with longer ascenders and descenders, making it a bit truer to Koch's original design than the second version, ITC Kabel, which was designed by Victor Caruso. This version, also known in the United States as Cable, has a larger x-height, shorter ascenders and descenders, more weights ,and a diamond shaped i-dot. Typefaces in the same oeuvre include Avenir Next, ITC Avant Garde Gothic, Metrolite, Metromedium, Metroblack, and Erbar, just to name just a few."

Melodi is the result of years of working with hand made types on my designs. Every time I draw the letters and words that I need for every design piece. One day I decided to go serious and make a real type of it and “Melodi” is the result of this work. It’s a calligraphic font, built using a regular stroke, and carefully crafted to have nice joins between all the letters. It has some playful but stylish capitals that brings lot of personality to the font. It work super nice either in lowercase writing as in all-caps texts. It looks specially good on lists of words or small sentences. Melodi is a playful but very versatile font, it can be used in lots of different scenarios. Linotype Vision is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the entries of the Linotype-sponsored International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. Created by German designer Dan-André Neimeyer, the font contains five weights. The characters look as though they are constructed of fragments fitted only loosely together. Just enough of each character is put onto paper so that the eye of the reader can complete the conventional form. Based loosely on sans serif forms, the font has a futuristic, mathematical feel. In the early days of PostScript fonts, I designed a font of leaves called XLeafMeAlone. In 2006 I decided to revisit this topic and the result was two sets of new leaf fonts: MapleOaks and MoreLeaves. MapleOaks contains almost 100 images of maple, oak, and sycamore leaves, and MoreLeaves has almost 100 images of leaves of various other species. There are four MapleOak fonts. They have identical images; only the orientation of the images is different. In MapleOaksUR the tips of the leaves point to the upper right, in MapleOaksDR the tips point down to the right, etc.

Although traditional Heiti typefaces may not be as lively as Songti, the modesty of M Hei makes is enduring and stand out from other similar typefaces. M Hei’s design is based on the hallmarks of traditional Heiti typefaces: it has little to no thick-thin contrast in strokes and has square cut terminals. Its dots (點), ticks (剔) and downstrokes (撇、捺) are subtly curved and longer than usual; all stems (豎) and crossbars (橫) remain simple and clear; and hooks (勾) appear rounded. Bucintoro is a modern version of the rotunda blackletter, the Gothic book hand of Italy and Spain in the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries. As the name implies, it's more "rotund" than the tall, angular Textur blackletter used in Germany that Gutenberg imitated. While the use of blackletter continued far into the 20th century in Germany and Scandinavia, the rotunda gave way to roman (and later also italic) letterforms in Italy, France, and Spain. It's less well known these days. Bucintoro has upper- and lowercase alphabets, numerals, punctuation, diacritics but lacks such modern characters as currency symbols. Has light, medium, and black weights.

Syntax was designed by Swiss typographer Hans Eduard Meier, and issued in 1968 by the D. Stempel AG type foundry as their last hot metal type family. Meier used an unusual rationale in the design of this sans serif typeface; it has the shapes of humanist letters or oldstyle types (such as Sabon), but with a modified monoline treatment. The original drawings were done in 1954; first by writing the letters with a brush, then redrawing their essential linear forms, and finally adding balanced amounts of weight to the skeletons to produce optically monoline letterforms. Meier wanted to subtly express the rhythmical dynamism of written letters and at the same time produce a legible sans serif typeface. This theme was supported by using a very slight slope in the roman, tall ascenders, terminals at right angles to stroke direction, caps with classical proportions, and the humanist style a and g. The original foundry metal type was digitized in 1989 to make this family of four romans and one italic. Meier completely reworked Syntax in 2000, completing an expanded and improved font family that is available exclusively from Linotype GmbH as Linotype Syntax. In 2009 the typeface family was renamed into a more logical naming of "Syntax Next" to fit better in the Platinum Collection naming."

FF Signa is a typically Danish typeface, rooted in architectural lettering rather than book typography. Originally designed for signage—hence the name—FF Signa is now a typographic family with three widths. All weights include italics, small caps, and several styles of figures. Because of the quality of this “vernacular-lettering-into-typeface” conversion, FF Signa received a Danish Design Prize in 2002. FF Signa is radically different from most sans serif text typefaces that were published during the 1990s. It neither belongs in the “humanist sans” category, nor is it on the list of typefaces based on 19th-century grotesques. Its concise letterforms and a minimum of detail produce clear and harmonious word images. Yet its proportions are classical, and the underlying geometry has been subtly adjusted in order to create letterforms which are at once interesting, harmonious, and contemporary. These features make FF Signa pleasant for reading, even at very small sizes. The typeface has developed into a versatile family, with Condensed, Extended, and Correspondence versions. Later on Signa Serif, Stencil variants and a Signa Slab family added even more versatility. The resulting FF Signa type system may be used for corporate identities, brochures, magazines, communication, books, and on-screen publications.

Taglio’s name is derived from intaglio, which means “incised carving” or “an impression from an engraving”. Indeed, Taglio looks like an incised engraving with a contemporary calligraphic interpretation. The down strokes start with a single horizontal line that curves into a dual vertical line and ends with the same single line at the base. The dual elongated strokes create a bold overall impression but is literally twice as sophisticated than if the two lines were solid. That was exactly the goal in creating this font. We managed to create a font that is distinctive, elegant, and crisp that is also intentionally stencilled for more flexibility. For instance, it is ideal for laser cutting signage. One of the unique features in using the capital glyphs is that they stack perfectly without losing legibility, primarily because of the slanted ends of the dual vertical lines - see the example “Miami Fashion Week” display ad. Taglio’s unusual style was carefully crafted to come to life at display sizes. It is therefore ideal for use in branding fashion, restaurants, buildings, packaging, museums, signage, etc. An ideal pairing font is our WERK family which can be seen on some of the display ads below. An authentic script from the tip of the ball point pen. This hasn’t been seen yet: A typeface which truly looks as if it were handwritten. Calligraphy is, actually, the art of fine writing. And actually, written scripts as typeface for the computer are 100% nonsense. And yet, an obvious thought: Create a typeface which truly derives from everyday handwriting. And since we, if we write at all, utilize practically only a ball point pen anymore, then a modern cursive writing form must look like just that. As a counterpart to the artistic ”handwritings“ which have long been available as typeface, the thought of digitalizing a truly ”ugly“ handwriting is appealing. After all, time and again there is the need for a text to look ”handwritten“. Biró Script is written freehand with a ball point pen. Finally a truly individual script! Biró Script includes more than 300 authentic ligatures in addition to the customary alphabet. By the way, the most convincing effect is obtained with a font size of about 18 to 22 points, at which the thickness of the stroke is now about the same as that of a real ball point pen. There's a difference between the anglo-american forms of some characters (esp. the numerals 1 and 7, but also capitals I and F) and how it's written in the rest of the world. For those of us who aren’t used to the world-wide usual forms, Biró Script includes a US version with the appropriate characters.

La vie est une fleur dont l'amour est le miel Fleur is the French for flower and I've chosen this language for a good reason. Over the past 5 years, I've had the opportunity to travel a lot to Paris and I've always tried to catch every moment and detail of this delightful city through the eyes of the designer inside me. Paris is full of surprises, mainly for us, artists. In fact, I believe the city is a museum itself. Every corner of any street has something inspiring. But, there’s something I particularly love and I want to address here: The Palais Garnier. Built between 1861 and 1875, this opera house is a dream made true for many of us, who love somptuosité. Garnier, the architect of this magnificent building, said that the style he proposed was not Grecian nor Roman/baroque, he created something new and called it Napoleonic: Luxurious at its best. Fleur is inspired in this palace which, in fact, has some similar letters inside. Garnier put his name at the ceiling of the Rotonde des Abonnés: Letters are interlacing each other with nicely done art nouveau curves. I thought I could take this idea and achieve something very delicate and imposing at the same time if the font consisted entirely of caps with the logic of a didone and a bit of art-nouveau. This mix of elegance and flamboyance gave birth to Fleur which has a wide range of uses but was mainly intended for perfumes, fashion magazines, storefronts, book covers or logos. Not only you'll find many decorative glyphs, but also a vast amount of unique ligatures will make you really adore this font. Ornaments family with four different sets plus a decorative capitals font from the rare, valuable and amazing Allerlei Zierat book from Schelter & Gieseck (1902). A research and free interpretation by Intellecta Design. This encyclopedic specimen book of the Leipzig, Germany type foundry and printing supply house J.G. Schelter & Giesecke features, as the title indicates, all kinds of decoration for supplying printing of every type. On the title page, the firm boasts winning grand prize in 1900 in Paris (presumably at the Exposition Universelle). It is hard to do justice in a short description to the variety of styles (traditional, Jugenstil, etc.) and categories (certificates, letterheads, borders, ornaments, exotic motifs, flowers, animals, silhouettes, menus, greeting cards, vignettes humorous and otherwise, images of bicyclists, occupational symbols, portraits, Classical figures, religious art, heraldry, ships, trains, athletes, etc., etc.) offered in this volume. Some of the examples are printed in color, most are in black-and-white. The Jugenstil cover of this copy shows minor wear and soiling. The plate of “Gust. Carlsson & Co., Stockholm” is attached to the front pastedown. A small fraction of pages show minor soiling, a pencil notation or a short closed tear. Two of the fold-outs at the back have a little more damage-one is missing a 1x2 inch piece along the margin, the other has a 3-inch closed tear and an edge which is crumpled. A rare specimen from the Intellecta rare books library.

This is my interpretation of Edel Grotesk – a “lost typeface” from circa 1914 produced by Johannes Wagner GmbH of Ingolstadt, Germany. PG Grotesque is definitely not a revival, or even a faithful reproduction of that typeface as I was unable to source enough accurate references. What I have done is take the essence and unique characteristics of that typeface and brought this forgotten gem right into the 21st century. The full family features 99 fonts spread across 9 weights and 6 widths. PG Grotesque is also available as a single variable font so that you can fine tune the width, weight, and italic angle to your exact preference. Distinctive features include high-waisted capitals, a straight-legged capital ‘R’, and flattened arches in the ‘a’ and ‘g’ glyphs. Using PG Grotesque will give your typography a distinctly retro feel with its vintage heritage inherent in every character.
