Atwin is a modern remake of Franco Grignani’s Gemini. It is inspired by the unusual forms of the MICR numbers on bank cheques. Strangely rounded rectangles make the glyphs appear unfamiliar; an angular but also blobby design that disrupts and breaks away from tradition. Good in display sizes. I like playing around with brushes and Chinese ink. I always have some kind of idea of what the final design should look like, but once it’s done, it never ever looks like what I had in mind. Apex Brush is one of those designs: it started off as a few brush strokes, but before I knew it, I had a really nice set of matching brush fonts! Use it for any design that needs a bit of rough, a splash of ink and a pinch of rebel.

Originally drawn in 1999 as a college project with the ambition to make the ‘most beautiful’ alphabet in the world. After these heroic beginnings Spaghetti lay dormant in the VLNL vaults for many years, appearing to silently peter away. Now look at it! Ten years hence, it is finally being served up in glorious OpenType, precisely al dente. As automated special sauce, each lowercase character before or after a space receives a nice little ball ending to round things off. And finally, the parmesan cheese sprinkled on top is like a tasty bunch of ligatures – enough to make your mouth water.

Unarmed began life as a series of rectangles in Fireworks. The task was designing my own business card for the first time in years, and the perfect lettering couldn't be found in either free or commercial fonts. While there were some good choices, none of them really communicated who I was. Initially only the lowercase letters in my name were created, with each being designed around a 7 x 4 grid of squares. I liked the result so much that I wanted to use the same typeface in different projects - and to save time in future, I decided to create this font. In creating DM Unarmed, the intention was to avoid diagonal lines, and to keep all the lines horizontal, vertical and grid-like. This made creating some of the characters - particularly the rounded ones and the letters X and Z - challenging. Coming from both worlds, I wanted to achieve a blend of technicality and creativeness, without trying to pretend one was the other. For best results this font should be used for large and prominent text, although it works at smaller sizes up to 12pt. I've spent a lot of time trying to hint a few characters that wouldn't play ball, such as 2, 7 and 8. In case you're wondering: DM Unarmed got its name from my philosophy of facing challenges without reliance on tools and weapons.

Guillotine is inspired by an uncredited early 1970s film face called Rhythm Bold. Guillotine is a thick poster classic, mechanically constructed yet clearly exhibiting the idiosyncratic traits of hand drawing. Clarks is a modular typeface built from a work by Lygia Clark, one of the giants of Brazilian postwar art. Packed in a font equipped with clever OpenType programming, there are at least 7 different designs for each letter, thus allowing, or rather, proposing, boldly unconventional compositions. The font is programmed to cycle all these different lettershapes, avoiding repetition. The user can also manually pick up preferred forms in a glyph palette. There are choices to both keep and to defy readability and it's almost hypnotic to play with these. Lygia Clark used to invite viewers to touch her works and so we did with her 'Planes in Modulated Surface no. 4', from 1957: we fragment it and turned and inverted and recombined it. Miniver was inspired by a trip made to the library, looking for new ideas. Immediately gravitating towards the DVD for the 1942 film Mrs. Miniver, the hand-lettered title on the cover had a very contemporary look and feel so, there was the 'springboard' into a new font. Trapper is so named because it exploits a typographic design mechanism known as ink traps purely for graphic effect. Ink traps are a device used by type designers to create significantly higher legibility under adverse printing conditions, especially when the intended use of the type is to be printed at small sizes on mediocre substrate. For Trapper the ink trap is overused for exaggerated visual effect. This gives the Round version a playful twisted balloons look while the Sharp has a stern mechanical default effect.
