A Trollkatt in Norwegian myth, is the cat associated with witches. The last few days a stray ginger cat seems to have adopted us - she comes into the house, lies down on the carpet and loves the cat food we bought her. We have posted some ‘found a cat’ messages online and hung op some flyers - just in case someone is missing a cat. Because of the stray, I decided that I should name this font something cattish, so Trollkatt is what popped up. The font is quite nice; I made it with my Chinese ink and a brush, from which I cut most of the hairs. This font won’t catch mice, but it will put some magic into your designs! And the stray cat… well, if she isn’t chipped and no one comes to fetch her, we will keep her. #happyending

Last year, we visited Brazil and we were totally captivated by its cheerful and warm people. Its wild nature is absolutely amazing and very noticeable in textile printing as well as in floral design. That was precisely what inspired us to create some ornaments and dingbats, which we then turned into a single typographic work. I present Hatran as the last font of 2023. The Hatran script was used in what is now northern Iraq to write Hatran Aramaic, a Middle Aramaic dialect that was spoken in the region of Hatra and Assur in northeastern Mesopotamia from about the 3rd Century BC to the 3rd Century AD. Hatran Aramaic is also known as Aramaic of Hatra or Ashurian (Leššānā Assūrāyā \ ܠܫܢܐ ܐܣܘܪܝܐ), and first appeared in writing in 98 BC. The script is also known as the Hatran Aramaic script or Ashurian script. It appears mainly in texts found in the ruins of Hatra. There are also some texts in Hatran Aramaic from Assur and other places. It was discovered in 1912 by archaeologtists working in Hatra, which is near to the villages of Al-Hadar (الحضر) in the Nineveh Governorate (محافظة نينوى) of Iraq.

To be independent or to be dependent? The formula “one plus one is one” is here essential for this to work. The different cases, upper and lower is dependent on one another. At first glance, the lettering style of Technopen JNL seems to emulate the computer-age fonts of the 1980s. In actuality, this font is derived from an alphabet sample found in an instructional booklet for the Esterbrook Drawlet Pens. The Drawlet line was Esterbrook's answer to the iconic Speedball pen points sold through their chief competitor, the Hunt Pen Manufacturing Company. So, what seems to be late 20th Century typography is actually from vintage source material. In fact, the entire contents of the instructional booklet were copyright 1929! A few minor changes were made to the original A-Z alphabet and additional characters were added. The name Technopen is a shortening of the term 'technical pen', which is both a nod to the techno age of the 80s and the technical instruments of the past utilized for drawing and lettering.
