American type designer Paul H. Neville created this display FontFont in 1995. The family contains 2 weights: Condensed and Black and is ideally suited for editorial and publishing and poster and billboards. Martin, a condensed semi-serif with rounded edges and friendly serifs, shows its charme best in short, pointed sentences, in headlines set in about 20 to 36 p. The playing with serifs in a condensed, very characteristic type design is attractive and the technical skill is convincing. More styles are planned. The idea was to try to apply a given design criteria (also see Volker Schnebel's Marita and Manuel fonts) to every single character. In other words, start with a character and develop all of the others from it. This is quite easy for some characters but extremely difficult for others. This process generates creativity and the characters move away from the initial constructed sketch. Together in a typeface, the individual characters are now all of a piece and character.

The Xavier family of typefaces is based on the delightful deco typeface called Ashley Crawford, originally designed in 1930 by Ashley Havinden. After designing Xavier Black (Serif) and Xavier Sans Black, I added Bold Sans, Medium and Medium Sans and finally added lowercase to the medium weights. Although more manageable than Ashley Crawford, Xavier, due to its very playful nature (splayed A, M, etc.) needs to be used with care, especially in terms of spacing. Xavier is a playful typeface and I have been particularly pleased to see it used in children's books.

Tambau is a display typeface crafted by Matheus “Fio” Gonçalves, a Brazilian design student, still in college, inspired by Brazilian concert urban posters and wood type that I saw at the Oficina Tipográfica São Paulo. The font was first made for a magazine project in design school, making it beautiful on giant pages headlines, billboards, signs, etc. There’s no lowercase, the character set is dramatic and objective. The uppercase is actually expanded letterforms causing some eyes and breathing paths to the very condensed and very modular glyphs, which creates a quite interesting striped texture between form, counterform and spacing. The lots of ligatures come to give it more closure between the letters, when they try to form blank spaces. So do the diacritics, fitting in the space given to them by the dynamic letterforms, making dense rectangular blocks. You may use Tambau as big as you can or do a high tracking to it and still it will be pretty. The titles can be dynamic, just condensed or just large. It’s on your own. Don’t be afraid to play with Tambau, it’s an alive typography. Curiosity: For the magazine in design school, the pilot project of Tambau was cut in a MDF board, to print it with texture and paint. Later was added more characters, languages and special glyphs to it. Set: Tambau is a singular font typeface, with extended and condensed characters, numbers, ligatures, punctuation and symbols for Basic, Western, Central and South Eastern Latin languages.

Config’s sibling, this typeface was influenced by geometric sans with circular forms on the tops and bottoms of characters, but the proportions have been condensed by incorporating straight sides for a design that is efficient yet friendly. Many decades back, churches, schools and other buildings with a need to display an outdoor message often chose a sign making system utilizing characters silk screened onto metal pieces in a block chamfer style. Each piece had a crimp in the top of the metal which formed a hook to fit over the existing rails of a message panel. This allowed for a finished sign to be displayed within minutes, and a quick change of information was not very time-consuming. A popular version of these signs provided white letters and numbers on black backgrounds. This was the model for Announcement Board JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. There are two different width blank panels on the broken and solid bars for those who wish to kern the letters tight to form a ribbon, however they were designed to have slight spacing in order to emulate the hand assembly of those vintage sign panels.

Viktor Solt-Bittner drew logo sketches for an insurance company. Luckily for Schriftlabor, they rejected the design, and he turned the sketches into a font family. Years later, Plantago was expanded, developed and completed by Schriftlabor’s type directors Franziska Hubmann and Lisa Schultz. Plantago shows delicate leaf-like stroke endings and subtle curvings and offers condensed and wide variants. Typeset in 6 weights from Light to Black, 3 widths from Condensed to Extended, both upright and italic, totaling in no less than 36 styles.

Fabbabi is a vintage bold retro-font suggested uses would be for headlines that catch the eye. Stanzer is an interpretation of wood type combined with the idea of modern stencils. Instead of cutting every letter, we are presenting an example of how a modern stencil typeface could look like, as we have come to the conclusion that almost every letter works without cutting it. Stanzer is a Unicase typeface, available in three OpenType weights: Black, Shadow and Block. Stanzer first started as part of our diploma 2010 (it was called Stanley at that time). The basic idea behind this typeface is that it is fully stencil usable, and, unlike other stencil fonts, does not require any bridges (except for the O and Q). Almost every letter can be sprayed without inserting planks. However, Stanzer also offers the display weight Block, which is only suitable for print or online usage.

Newsreel Caps JNL is a novelty caps-only outline letter with cast shadow set inside film frames. Although the design idea itself is not new, this version is based on lettering from a vintage piece of sheet music for a song featured in the movie "Fox Movietone Follies". The font is a wink and nod to Fox's long-running newsreel series called "Fox Movietone News". The upper case keys have black letters on a white frame, while the lower case keys have white letters on a black frame. A blank white frame is on the period key; a blank black frame is on the comma key. Use this font for individual initials, set the characters loose for effect or set them tight (as provided) for a continuous film strip.

Before the mid-to-late 1970s, when retailers started to embrace UPC (universal price code) technology on a grand scale, pricing merchandise took on many forms. One method especially popular with variety stores (such as Woolworth's, McCrory's, Kress, etc.) were pre-printed price tags that came in small pads and were inserted into metal holders. Shelf Tags JNL recreates a vintage price tag based on examples seen online, and allows the user different ways to create their own vintage-style price tags. You can either utilize the round pen nib style numbers and price marks to place on any size or type tag, or type out prices using the reversed characters (white on black) along with the two end caps provided to form a complete tag unit. For the more adventurous, a complete blank tag is also provided in case the desire is to print a solid color tag background and [using the regular numbers] crate prices in custom colors. Two sets of smaller number (for "floating" cents prices) are also provided in regular numbers and reverse panels. As an extra bonus, there is a set of 1 through zero, dollar sign, cents sign and decimal point individual black-on-white outlined panels for making individual pricing numbers. A 1930s WPA (Works Progress Administration) poster advertising an exhibit of New Jersey area posters had its main lettering rendered in a very condensed hand lettered interpretation of the ever-popular Futura Black Art Deco style. This has now been re-drawn and digitized as Art Event JNL, in both regular and oblique versions.
