Broken letters or Gothic letters, also known as German letters, are the typeface used in Europe West from the 12th century to the 17th century. Meanwhile, Danish spoke it until 1875 and German, Estonian and Latvian spoke it well into the 20th century. Fracture is one of the broken typefaces that is often considered to represent the entire broken typeface. Broken letters are sometimes also called Old English, but not in the Old English or Anglo-Saxon sense that was born centuries earlier. This group of letters is so named because it contains Latin letters that have breaks in the curvature of the letters, either in part or in whole designs. The fracture arises from a sudden dip when writing certain parts of the letter. In contrast, letters with perfect, unbroken curves, such as Antikua, are created from smooth, flowing writing movements. Pocketknife is a simple grid-based titling font on it’s surface, but it has a surprisingly prolific set of features under the surface. The most notable of these features is an abundant set of ligatures that give Pocketknife it’s unique look. There are very few kerning pairs contained within Pocketwatch, and these ligatures fill in most gaps that could be created by letters with more empty space, such as L and T, and also give a more playful look to an otherwise sharp-edged typeface. Pocketknife also contains with 2 full sets of alternate characters, one pairing with the uppercase set and one pairing with the lowercase—available as OpenType stylistic alternates or individually in the Glyphs panel. Pocketknife Regular is designed to be used on it’s own, while the Inline and Base fonts are designed to be used as a simple layered combination. Designed over three years after the second World War, and published in 1949 by the Nebiolo foundry, Normandia was Alessandro Butti’s take on the fat face. As it usually was with Butti’s designs, this face effectively injected a catchy yet expertly calculated calligraphic spin into its source of inspiration — which was the essentially geometric/deco, thicker model of Bodoni’s very popular aesthetic. The metal Normandia saw some widespread use for a handful of years after its publication, not least because of the multitude of sizes in which it was available. It stepped out of the limelight by the mid-1950s, due to a combination of the popularity of cold type and Nebiolo’s refusal to retool its faces for new technologies. It was copied by a few small film typesetting outfits on both sides of the Atlantic, but never really found its way back to the mainstream. By the time computer type became the norm, Normandia was pretty much relegated to a type historian’s collection of anecdotes. This digital update of the classic series revives and refines the three original metal designs (Tonda/Regular, Corsiva/Italic, and Contornata/Outline) and expands the character set to more than 600 glyphs per font, including small caps, six types of figures, fractions and nut fractions, a full set of f-ligatures, some stylistic alternates, and other fine typography niceties.

Engaging the issue of scalability, Beaufort® is configured so that serifs render with great sharpness, independent of type size, limited only by device resolution. In style, Beaufort has a number of affinities. In proportion, the basic Beaufort is in the vein of the classic oldstyle types that descend from Granjon , via the French Oldstyles, or Elzevirs, to Plantin and Times in the early twentieth century. Designed for optimum clarity, readibility, and word count, these types have a pronounced angle of stress in the lower case, which is quite large and fairly narrow in relation to the caps. None of the caps are exceptionally narrow, and both cases have an evenness of width that makes for a no-nonsense, orthodox appearance. The strength of the capitals distinguishes these types from those of another “optimizing” era, the 1970s and ’80s, when puny caps made for monotonous text. However, strong though they may be, Beaufort’s caps are not as obtrusive in text as those of Times or Plantin.

This old classic font has an interesting history, it was originally cut with lowercase by the Bruce Type Foundry in 1865 and listed as Ornamented No. 1514. Around 1903 the Bruce foundry was bought by ATF, in 1933 this font was revived by ATF as Caps only and was given the Gold Rush name but was sometimes called Klondike. A similar version of this font with lowercase and radiused serifs was produced by the James Conner's Sons Type Foundry around 1888. In the past other foundries such as the Carroll foundry, Type Founders of Phoenix and the Los Angeles Type Foundry have produced an all caps version of this font. After examining several printed sources of this font from more recent books I found that the original from Bruce's 1882 book was by far the best in design quality, it was also the only printed source that included the lowercase. New open faced, ornamented and distressed versions have been added to this old classic font, there are also many extended characters for Western, Central and Eastern European countries. The Gold Rush Trail OpenType version has alternate double letter pairs included in the font and will automatically be substituted when used in Adobe CS products or other software that takes advantage of OpenType features.
