Images of ‘lost’ or forgotten signs from the past are on a number of sites all over the web. One in particular partially revealed a vintage sign for “J. Yormark Shoes" behind a barbershop sign at 15 – 8th Avenue in New York City. The sign remained until 2014. The stencil effect made by the formation of the stained glass letters inspired On Your Mark JNL, which is available in both regular and oblique versions. The font’s name is a play on the shoe vendor’s name… “Yormark”.

Pokerface is an industrious mixed-case display font devised on the theme of playing cards, designed by Jim Ford. Violant fonts are designed as a tribute to Queen Violant, wife of Jaume 1st, king of Aragon, a woman of strong character, who supported her husband in the conquest of Valencia in 1238. Probably, Violant read texts in Gothic letters, which at that time were subjected to a stylization process in Castile and Aragon. The hands in this font are the pointing, counting, threatening, signaling, demonstrating and playing hands I use in my own design projects. I have drawn them all with a felt-tip marker, scanned and digitized for use in a font. This picture font is more user-friendly than having single ps-files. Sadness is based on some experiments during Felix Braden’s stay at the Trier College of Design: "I played around with Fontographer’s blendfonts-feature (a type design tool to interpolate fonts and to minimize effort and expenditure of large families) with some files from a close designer. Since the basic elements derived from extremely varied fonts without any similarities, the concluding shapes first turned out to be rather fragmentary. A 1930s hand-lettered poster for the play "The Cradle Will Rock", put on by the WPA (Works Progress Administration) Federal Theater Project is the source material for Talent Show JNL; available in both regular and oblique versions. Originally, the "R" and "L" had fish hook bends, but those two letters were revised to be more traditional in structure. The obvious Art Deco influence, along with what sign painters refer to as "stovepipe lettering" (straight lines with curved [bent] corners) is a simple, clean approach to retro-influenced titling.

This font was inspired by the title logo of the TV show The Wild Wild West (season two). The font was named after the train in the TV show. Wanderer is a combination of my Classic Tuscan Rodeo Clown font and a Robust Slab Serif font. Wanderer is available as a stand alone font or with the optional fill fonts. Caution: Use of this font may cause the Wild Wild West theme song to play over and over in your head. Solution: Try temporarily using another FontMesa font such as Rough Riders.

String Theory has been a 10+ year project in the making which originated from a type workshop in Graduate School at Otis College of Art & Design. The workshop was hosted by Dutch designer Hansje Van Halem, and we were tasked to play with string to create letterforms. Thus String Theory was born, and slowly migrated from yarn, to an illustrator file, to what it is today as a type family. Each glyph has it’s own custom string set up, along with each weight. Experimental in nature, edgy, with subliminal angst and grittiness.

This typeface came about when playing with felt tip marker settings in Corel Painter and is derivative of my own handwriting. Up until Workstation Clutter, all of my fonts were designed on paper, then scanned or reproduced into a digital format. With the use of Painter, the non-digital steps were removed, making this the first fully-digital Zang-O-Fonts typeface. Brian J Bonislawsky of the Astigmatic One Eye Typographic Institute helped round out the character set and additional needed characters. The name was inspired by an ex-girlfriend's disorganized desk.

I like playing around with brushes and Chinese ink. I always have some kind of idea of what the final design should look like, but once it’s done, it never ever looks like what I had in mind. Apex Brush is one of those designs: it started off as a few brush strokes, but before I knew it, I had a really nice set of matching brush fonts! Use it for any design that needs a bit of rough, a splash of ink and a pinch of rebel.

The inspiration source for Chaoxiang Monogram is another hand-drawn treasure from a vintage embroidery publication which plays on the anglo-version of chinese letters with stabbing strokes and the charm of the orient. While the original intent of this monogram style is uncertain, the possibilities of its use are up to your imagination. This is one of many monogram designs from the early 1900’s which fall into a two letter format bound within a framing element.
