Over the years I have bought many books and music CDs in persuit of my passion for African and Latin (and especially Afro-Latin) cultures. I've noticed that a great number of these books and CDs feature either of two popular display fonts that are, in my opinion, very much overused. As an alternative, I designed Tambor. The Tambor family includes seven styles.

Antipasto is a geometric sans serif font designed by Cosimo Lorenzo Pancini. The original family of three weights has been revised and expanded in 2017 with Antipasto Pro that now includes cyrillic and greek characters, open type features (small caps and old style numerals), six new weights from the hairline to the extrabold and an icons set in 8 weights.

Primordial is a chaotic handmade script font. It is rough around the edges, glyphs are shaky and don’t follow a baseline. Yet, in all this chaos, you will find the budding of a new idea, a glimpse of hope and a glint of something beautiful. Primordial comes in a regular and italic style, plus a back slanted style called Primordial Chaos.

Klondike began life as an update of the discontinued Elemeno font Pourpoint. It took on a life of its own early in the design process and went in a completely different direction. Standard Klondike is best at very large sizes and evokes a disco or neon feel. Klondike Solid works at smaller sizes to compliment the regular version or on its own.

Elina continues the series of graceful calligraphic typefaces by Natalia Vasilyeva that partially imitate broad pen drawings. The family consists of two styles -- normal and decorative. Decorative style contains characters ornamented with thin strokes that add a beauty and charm to the design. The fonts can be used in display matters, advertising and celebration texts. Released by ParaType in 2011.

One of countless variations possible from the modular lettering system called "Super Veloz", developed by Spanish type designer Joan Truchut-Blanchard in the 1930s. This particular variant, for whatever reason, was called "Bob" in the style sheet announcing the system, and it seemed particularly apt. Both versions of this font include the complete Unicode 1252 Latin and Unicode 1250 Central European character sets.

The designers of wood type in the 1880s did not lack for inspiration or imagination. From extremely ornate designs to ultra compressed or condensed alphabets, there was no shortage of variety. Saddle Tramp JNL is one such compressed font. Its wide, bold design coupled with its squat appearance allows for multiple words in a headline without overuse of page space.

Ciabatta is a luscious font made especially for packaging. Thanks to 5 weights, it can be used for all eventualities; powerful in headlines or as lettering, yet very legible in small texts. Its shapes are slightly narrow and based on classical italics but Ciabatta includes alternates with a double-storey ‘a’ and ‘g’ which offer a more formal appearance upright.

The Hybi14-Boldie is a bold Script in two styles. It’s lack of excessive details makes it appropriate for all oportunities of headlines, slogans and advertising. It’s friendly and charming character makes it pleasant to look at. The fonts are offering a huge character set for usage in many languages. Also thousands of kerning pairs within each style are obligatory.

Neverland is my attemp of a lettering font. I was inspired by the letters in displays of retaurants. It will work great in posters, shirts, magazines and displays because it has a charming feel. I received a lot of help from my good friend Maximiliano Sproviero (Lián Types). The name is based on the tale of Peter Pan from James Matthew Barrie.

Farquharson is an all-caps display face, adapted from an early American woodtype, and designed especially for use in the book Charlie Farquharson’s Unyverse. The complete family consists of two fonts: a regular version and a stencil version. Alternate versions with slightly elongated feet are provided for A, H, K, M, N and R. Very eccentric, it is best used in small doses.

The Parity concept takes the minimalist unicase alphabet and expands it in another dimension, that of the megafamily encompassing a variety of weights, optical sizes and styles (roman/italic, serif/sans, proportional/monowidth)—of benefit whether fine tuning a single, quite specific font for the task at hand, or harmoniously combining several in the hierarchy of a multi-formatted page layout.

Eckhardt Showcard JNL and Eckhardt Showcard Two JNL are drawn from more lettering found in an old sign painting book. Jeff Levine has continued naming a series of fonts for the late Albert Eckhardt, Jr. (1929-2005) who had owned Allied Signs in Miami, Florida from 1959 until his passing. Al was a talented lettering artist and a good friend to Jeff.

Nouvelle is an elegant sans serif family of six fonts (light, regular, semibold and italics). This modular typeface works just as well as display typeface as it does in body text. Because of the high x-hight it stays readable in very small sizes. It has 1884 characters: oldstyle numerals, ligatures and extra characters that support almost all European languages.

Mary Read is a modern handwritten Display Font, showing its fancy curves best in headlines as well as short texts. For typographic variety the typeface offers a range of features and extras. Give your texts a quite playful and handwritten note. Being chi chi is not a crime, don’t hesitate to pepper some sweetness in the midst of people’s attention.

Noted British type designer David Quay designed Blackmoor in 1983. Based on an old English letter style, this textura-style Blackletter evokes a mediaeval character, expertly mixing a gothic lowercase together with Lombardic capitals. If you wanted to send out a party invitation in 1923, Barnhart Brothers & Spindler recommended this typeface, which was originally called, simply, "Greeting Card". It also appears to be suitable for greetings from Mars. Available in two weights, regular and bold. Both versions of the font include the 1252 Latin and 1250 CE character sets (with localization for Romanian and Moldovan).

Telecom is a new, experimental typeface designed by Jan Estrada-Osmycki. Inspired by space-age, science-fiction and the work of Wim Crouwel. It's design combines mechanical, modular approach to type and elegance of letterforms. It's super-high contrast, thin hairlines and close attention to detail makes it a font to be set in greater sizes. Comes in four weights.

A sturdy workhorse with the grace of a gazelle, the FF Pastoral typeface family marries pure craftsmanship with rapturous excesses of form. With his fifteenth release under the FontFont brand, prolific French designer Xavier Dupré has filled a typographic toolbox with plentiful options ranging from a tender, feathery Thin to a robust, healthy Black. At a glance, FF Pastoral appears deceptively simple, particularly in the middle weights. That surface serenity is intentional and allows for easy reading and quick comprehension of short blocks of copy. Upon closer inspection, FF Pastoral is complex and nuanced, carrying a balanced tension in its forms. This plays particularly well in magazine spreads and corporate logos, where uniqueness is a virtue. In creating his latest design, Dupré drew inspiration from a tasteful mix of references, combining diverse elements with a deft hand. While its letter shapes were informed by humanist-geometric hybrid Gill Sans, FF Pastoral’s proportions have been optimized for contemporary typography. Slightly condensed but generously spaced, FF Pastoral features a tall x-height, open counters, and subtle, sprightly italics slanted at just 5°. Proportional oldstyle figures are the default in the family, with tabular and lining numbers and fractions accessible through OpenType features. The 1960’s and 1970’s are the inspiration for Sugarbang! Everything from music packages, beach party movies of the 60’s to cereal box art of the 1970’s are reflected in the kooky style that this font evokes. Sugarbang! is built on a random baseline so letterforms bounce up and down adding to the “zany” look of the design.
