I bought a new coffee machine - the piston variety. It is shiny, made in Italy and I can make a killer espresso or latte with it. I usually start off the day with a pour over coffee and save my milky coffee for later. I also have two grinders: one for a coarse grind (pour over) and one for a finer grind (espresso and latte). Yes, you will probably say that it’s quite extravagant to have two grinders, but I do like my coffee! Anyways, this is what I thought of when I worked on Coarse Grind. Coarse Grind is a well balanced all caps display font. It comes with extensive language support and a set of alternates for the lower case letters.

Two typefaces from Farmer & Little's 1867 specimen book, entitled Antique No. 2 and Antique Light Extended, provided the inspiration for this happy family of antique charmers. Both versions of this font include the complete Latin 1252, Central European 1250 and Turkish 1254 character sets.

Caffe was originally designed for the Artz Gallery Cafe in Budapest Hungary. The design is a contemporary handwriting style adapted from examples in lettering exercise books. It has been redrawn and expanded into six styles. The four weights were created by drawing the style using different mediums: Cappuccino in pen, Pastry in felt-tip, Lemonade in brush, and Tobacco—the original—in pencil. Poster and Poster Inline round out the family and are well suited for display purposes. This font family is perfect for bistro menus or other European-flavored poster and print design.

Linotype Sunburst is part of the Take Type Library, chosen from the contestants of Linotype’s International Digital Type Design Contests of 1994 and 1997. Designed by British artist Ed Bugg, Linotype Sunburst is a font which consistently avoids all that is round. The forms are angular and pointed with triangular serifs which seem almost like flags waving from the paper. This playful font could easily be associated with sun, sand and vacation. Flagstaff JNL takes the lettering from Roma Initial Caps JNL and gives them the movement of an unfurled banner. For added effect, there are flagpoles facing in either direction on the lesser and greater keys. Left and right flag ends are placed on the parenthesis keys; a wide blank flag panel is on the left brace key and a narrow blank flag panel is on the right brace key. Letters only; no punctuation or extended characters.

Arkeo BT is designer Brian Sooy's first typeface family published by Bitstream. Given very few design elements to work with, Brian has designed a bitmap font that is unique and very readable. There are three widths, Condensed, Regular and Extended. In our opinion, pixels never looked so good. Arkeo performs equally well on screen and as on paper. The OpenType versions include an extended character set featuring oldstyle figures, fractions and additional f-ligatures. Design was begun in late 2001 and completed in 2002. Sooy asked Bitstream to critique, which we did gladly. We also added additional characters for OpenType. This included alternate figure set, an extended set of fractions and additional f-ligatures. Sooy used preliminary versions for setting parts of the TypeCon 2002 material and website.

Geometric/Technical style logotypes have been developed for car chrome labels since the early 1980’s, but automobile companies don't monopolize the style by any means. During the 80’s and 90’s, a lot of these logos leaned towards the geometric sans styles and the swiss styling of fonts like Handel Gothic, while playing with varying degrees of squared rounds and varying expanded widths per logotype. Mercurial has this flavor, but it wasn’t derived from logotypes. Instead, it began as a digitization of a film typeface from LetterGraphics in the early 70's known as "Sam". Toma Sans is a sans serif type family of seven weights plus matching italics. Influenced by the geometric-style sans serif faces that were popular during the 1920s and 30s, the fonts are based on geometric forms that have been optically corrected for better legibility. Toma Sans has a functional look with a friendly open touch. While the ExtraLight and the black weights are great performers in display sizes the light, regular and medium weights are well suited to longer texts. The small x-height and the restrained forms lend it a distinctive elegance. The typeface has an extended character set to support most European languages.

From 1702 to 1811 the French "Royal", then "Imperial", Printers, neglected Garamond and Fournier's designs and used only the font called "Romain du Roy", carved (1693 to 1723) by Philippe Grandjean by order of the king Louis XIV. 1790 Royal Printing was inspired by various variants of Romain du Roy that were in use during this period. Our sources were mainly official and legal documents printed in the late royal period, and in the beginning of the French revolution. There was no bold style. The 1790 Royal Printing Caps fonts contain small caps, plus titling caps for headlines as 1790 Royal Printing capitals are intended to be used preferably for text.

Grafika is a completely original design, done in an “Art Deco” spirit reminiscent of the 1920s and ‘30s. I designed Grafika many years ago to be typeset for title cards, and both opening and end credits for the Merchant/Ivory feature film “Savages”. After the film, the design languished in my archives until I rediscovered it. I have digitally redrawn Grafika, completing it with all the alternates, ligatures, math, foreign accented characters and punctuation that weren’t required of the original design for film. Grafika is strongest when set in upper and lowercase—its unique caps extending below the baseline—although all caps settings are encouraged as well.

Squarefill is an all-uppercase grunge typeface featuring Latin, Extended Latin and Cyrillic character sets.

Irena is a cubist/expressionist font inspired by Vojtěch Preissig. Preissig (1873-1944) was a Czech typographer, printmaker, illustrator and teacher, whose work was influenced by Japanese Art and Symbolism. During WWII, Preissig supported the Czech resistance and he was arrested in 1940. He died on June 11th in Dachau concentration camp. This font was named after his daughter Irena Bernášková. The Irena font is angular and square(ish), yet easy to read. It comes with extensive language support.

The current trend is social media, friendship connection applications and personal web portfolios. We started to do a little research to see the trends of this type of font. Here are some of our notes; 1. Texts are usually in the form of relaxed, non-connected handwriting. 2. There are several connected glyphs, usually by the letters 'o', 'i' and 'y'. And double letters like ‘ll’ and ‘tt’. We anticipate this by making ligature for common texts written concatenated. 3. For personal web portfolio needs, provide affirmation as a characteristic. So the first letter is usually in the form of uppercase which is more prominent than the lowercase rhythm.
