Faithfully reproduced from my father’s design drawings made at The Municipal School of Arts and Crafts, Wolverhampton in 1939. Strong nostalgic influences of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. What caught my eye was the consistency with which each particular character was formed: every ‘R’ like every other, every ‘S’ the same. Tight letter spacing and loose word spacing characterised his titling but he didn’t trust himself to print without first ruling guidelines, a hint of which remain in this font.

Pax is clearly a didone, using Vox classification. The contrast between the thin lines and the thicker ones is noticeable, as you would expect from a didone. The basic form is relatively narrow, therefore I designed another Pax, slightly wider and darker, and called it Pax #2. Otherwise they are more or less identical. Pax is Latin for peace, on everyone's want list in 1995 - as well as every single year before and after that. Pax was released in 1995.

The design for Granjon was produced at the English branch of Linotype under the direction of George William Jones and appeared in 1928. This reproduction of a Garamond typeface was based on the typeface sample of the Frankfurt font foundry Egenolff from the year 1592 . The roman characters of the sample were made by Claude Garamond and the italic forms were designed by Robert Granjon. Jones made sure that the Granjon font remained true to the original characters of Garamond and Granjon.

It was during a visit to the Roman Forum that we were inspired by a seemingly unique style of lettering on a tablet among the ruins. The Latin message was chiseled in a condensed, free-style manner, almost as if it were intended as a personal note. While the stone showed only the capital letter forms of the period, we felt the creation of a lowercase would help extend the fonts usability and also add a whimsical feel to the design.

This typeface was started as assignment in Academy, then the idea grew to develop into a font family with different styles for interesting combinations. Inspiration came from my own hands -- it is amazing how fingers can form letters, so each letter has it’s own personality. Palatino is the work of Hermann Zapf and became available in the late 1950s from D. Stempel AG in Frankfurt am Main. Zapf optimized Palatino’s design for legibility, producing a typeface which remained legible even on the inferior paper of the post World War II period. Zapf named the font after Giambattista Palatino, a master of scripts from the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Trinculo is a cursive font which combines traditional letter forms with ridiculously ornate embellishments and flourishes. It's rather like what an 18th century clerk might have done with his lettering if he was bored to distraction with writing the same old letters again and again. The upper case characters are more complex with simpler versions of the same characters in the lower case. Trinculo is a lot of fun, though if you use it too much it may become overwhelming.

I was playing around with computer style forms, and suddenly noticed an optical effect in this style. There you go!

An authentic script from the tip of the ball point pen. This hasn’t been seen yet: A typeface which truly looks as if it were handwritten. Calligraphy is, actually, the art of fine writing. And actually, written scripts as typeface for the computer are 100% nonsense. And yet, an obvious thought: Create a typeface which truly derives from everyday handwriting. And since we, if we write at all, utilize practically only a ball point pen anymore, then a modern cursive writing form must look like just that. As a counterpart to the artistic ”handwritings“ which have long been available as typeface, the thought of digitalizing a truly ”ugly“ handwriting is appealing. After all, time and again there is the need for a text to look ”handwritten“. Biró Script is written freehand with a ball point pen. Finally a truly individual script! Biró Script includes more than 300 authentic ligatures in addition to the customary alphabet. By the way, the most convincing effect is obtained with a font size of about 18 to 22 points, at which the thickness of the stroke is now about the same as that of a real ball point pen. There's a difference between the anglo-american forms of some characters (esp. the numerals 1 and 7, but also capitals I and F) and how it's written in the rest of the world. For those of us who aren’t used to the world-wide usual forms, Biró Script includes a US version with the appropriate characters.

Our Grand Hotel Pro finds its inspiration from the title screen of the 1937 film “Cafe Metropole” starring Tyrone Power.
