Greater Albion Has been toying with thoughts of a “unicase” typeface for a while. On the other hand we’ve always wondered just what practical use they are. It is also a while since we’ve introduced a ‘handwritten’ design. Therefore, It struck us that one answer was something ‘hand-lettered’. These days many people do write in a sort of informal unicase don’t they? But, at the same time, we wanted it to have a little character. So here it is, a bit calligraphic, with a touch of black-letter and a cunning mix of upper- and lower-case forms Uncia Black!

Originally drawn in 1999 as a college project with the ambition to make the ‘most beautiful’ alphabet in the world. After these heroic beginnings Spaghetti lay dormant in the VLNL vaults for many years, appearing to silently peter away. Now look at it! Ten years hence, it is finally being served up in glorious OpenType, precisely al dente. As automated special sauce, each lowercase character before or after a space receives a nice little ball ending to round things off. And finally, the parmesan cheese sprinkled on top is like a tasty bunch of ligatures – enough to make your mouth water.

Korolev Rough is an inky, distressed version of Korolev , designed to mimic vintage letterpress, photocopies or hot metal on rough paper. FF Berlage started as a research project about the typography of the prominent Dutch architect Hendrik Pieter Berlage (1856 1935). So many designers hate Comic Sans. They think people who don't know design are overusing this funny little friendly font, which is nearly every time out of place. Since I have my new logotype people are asking me about the typeface it is based on. But it did not exist and I did not believe that it would actually work. I still love my logotype and so I went on to try to make it work as a font. After many different versions and some doubts I am glad to present Jocham. It is the first typeface with my name. For an obvious reason. There is only one weight with an italic. I tried different weight, but they were all not as strong as the final.
